Geographical boundaries of facial reconstruction

The principle of considering defined areas of the face as separate entities when planning reconstructive procedures is explained. The resurfacing of these individual areas is discussed, and the priorities in the order of reconstruction are defined.     

When the therapist must leave: Forced termination of psychodynamic therapy.

This article offers a comprehensive overview of the issues involved in therapist-imposed terminations of psychodynamic therapy. Despite the common occurrence of therapists leaving clinics because of job changes, end-of-training rotations, or relocation, there has been relatively little discussion in the literature of the forced termination process. The author decribes frequently encountered transference and countertransference reactions as well as realistic responses to the premature ending. Recommendations are offered regarding the timing and manner of informing patients, techniques that facilitate the expression and working through of feelings, and effective ways to achieve closure on the current therapy while helping patients to continue with a new therapist. Using computer graphics to teach the heat equation

The graphs of the Fourier series solution to three transient, one-dimensional heat conduction problems were produced. Also, the graphs of the orthogonal function solution to five transient, one-dimensional heat conduction problems with radiating boundary conditions were produced. These were made into two TV tapes which are used in the classroom to help illustrate the mathematical solution to the heat conduction problem.     

Hierarchical nanofabrication of microporous crystals with ordered mesoporosity

Shaped zeolite nanocrystals and larger zeolite particles with three-dimensionally ordered mesoporous (3DOm) features hold exciting technological implications for manufacturing thin, oriented molecular sieve films and realizing new selective, molecularly accessible and robust catalysts. A recognized means for controlled synthesis of such nanoparticulate and imprinted materials revolves around templating approaches, yet identification of an appropriately versatile template has remained elusive. Because of their highly interconnected pore space, ordered mesoporous carbon replicas serve as conceptually attractive materials for carrying out confined synthesis of zeolite crystals. Here, we demonstrate how a wide range of crystal morphologies can be realized through such confined growth within 3DOm carbon, synthesized by replication of colloidal crystals composed of size-tunable (about 10-40 nm) silica nanoparticles. Confined crystal growth within these templates leads to size-tunable, uniformly shaped silicalite-1 nanocrystals as well as 3DOm-imprinted single-crystal zeolite particles. In addition, novel crystal morphologies, consisting of faceted crystal outgrowths from primary crystalline particles have been discovered, providing new insight into constricted crystal growth mechanisms underlying confined synthesis.     

Modification of brain deoxyribonucleic acid base content with maturation in normal and malnourished rats

The mol percentage of 5-hydroxymethylcytosine is 2.2 times greater in the adult than in 2-day-old rat brain DNA. The concentration of 5-hydroxymethylcytosine falls in corresponding liver DNA preparations. This normal increase in brain 5-hydroxymethylcytosine is abolished in rats placed on an 8%-protein diet 5 days after birth.     

DocuBurst: Visualizing Document Content using Language Structure

Textual data is at the forefront of information management problems today. One response has been the development of visualizations of text data. These visualizations, commonly based on simple attributes such as relative word frequency, have become increasingly popular tools. We extend this direction, presenting the first visualization of document content which combines word frequency with the human-created structure in lexical databases to create a visualization that also reflects semantic content. DocuBurst is a radial, space-filling layout of hyponymy (the IS-A relation), overlaid with occurrence counts of words in a document of interest to provide visual summaries at varying levels of granularity. Interactive document analysis is supported with geometric and semantic zoom, selectable focus on individual words, and linked access to source text.     

Use of the Blister Test to Study the Adhesion of Brittle Materials. Part I. Test Modification and Validation

In the traditional configuration of the blister test, where the adhesive sheet is mounted on top of the substrate of interest, a brittle or fragile adhesive exhibits early cohesive failure during pressurization, preventing the measure of the interfacial fracture energy F. To permit the determination of this important materials system parameter in ice-substrate systems, we modified the blister test to an inverted configuration, where the substrate is the continuous top sheet, and the brittle adhesive (ice) is in the form of a thin interlayer under the substrate, but mounted on a massive, inert base. Several aspects of the modified test were examined, and the test was found to be valid within the range evaluated.     

Ten-Year Exposure Tests on Anodized Aluminium in a Severe Industrial Atmosphere

The paper describes the results of examination of specimens after 10 years’ exposure to a very severe industrial atmosphere. The work is a continuation of tests previously reported by Whittaker and Kape. All anodized films show signs of pitting and the specimens have lost reflectivity to a marked extent. Resistance improves with increasing film thicknesses and higher purity of the aluminium. Periodic washing with distilled water does not decrease pitting or delay its onset.
