To determine the natural history of Meckel's diverticulum, 202 case records of proved disease of Meckel's diverticulum were retrieved, covering a fifteen year period, from all the hospitals of King County, Washington (population, 1,143,800). Using the figure of 2 per cent incidence of Meckel's diverticulum, we calculated that a Meckel's diverticulum has a 4.2 per cent likelihood of causing disease during a lifetime, decreasing to zero with old age. Using previously published mortality and morbidity figures, we calculated that to save one patient's life from the complications of Meckel's diverticulum, it would be necessary to remove approximately 800 asymptomatic Meckel's diverticula. This would be likely to incur a significant amount of postoperative morbidity from postoperative intestinal obstruction and infection. We suggest that the prophylactic removal of Meckel's diverticulum is rarely, if ever, justified.  相似文献

A study was made of the contact properties of a AuBe eutectic and a AuBeNi alloy on p-type GaP. The specific contact resistance varied from 1 × 10?3 to 7.5 × 10?5 ω cm2 in the acceptor concentration range of 9 × 1016 to 2 × 1018 cm?3. In the sintering temperature range resulting in good ohmic behaviour and low contact resistance the AuBe contacts do not form drops, whereas the AuBeNi contacts became molten; even after melting they wetted the surface of the GaP well. At the temperature of sintering Be diffuses from the contact into the GaP. The diffusion of Be gives rise to an additional acceptor concentration of 5 × 1018 to 1 × 1019 cm?3 beneath the contact surface. Taking this into consideration the concentration-specific contact resistance relationship appears to support a field emission FE conduction mechanism.  相似文献

The first welded steel bridges in Germany – on the rocky beginnings of welding technology. Welding technology – and here primarily arc welding – began to be used about 80 years ago on bridges; first for repairing and strengthening them, and then increasingly, for building new ones. Initially, this new joining technology that had been used since before WWI in mechanical engineering, was met with skepticism on the part of building and code enforcement authorities, and hence, also by many in the building industry. Finally, in the early 1930's, welding technology started its explosive development in steel construction. This euphoric state was dampened a few years later due to several spectacular failures on bridges made of high‐quality construction steel. After comprehensive scientific studies were able to determine the causes of these failures, by the 1960's, welding finally established itself as the most important joining technology in steel bridge construction.  相似文献

We investigated how people interpret conditionals and how stable their interpretation is over a long series of trials. Participants were shown the colored patterns on each side of a 6-sided die and were asked how sure they were that a conditional holds of the side landing upward when the die is randomly thrown. Participants were presented with 71 trials consisting of all combinations of binary dimensions of shape (e.g., circles and squares) and color (e.g., blue and red) painted onto the sides of each die. In 2 experiments (N? = 66, N? = 65), the conditional event was the dominant interpretation, followed by conjunction, and material conditional responses were negligible. In both experiments, the percentage of participants giving a conditional event response increased from around 40% at the beginning of the task to nearly 80% at the end, with most participants shifting from a conjunction interpretation. The shift was moderated by the order of shape and color in each conditional's antecedent and consequent: Participants were more likely to shift if the antecedent referred to a color. In Experiment 2 we collected response times: Conditional event interpretations took longer to process than conjunction interpretations (mean difference = 500 ms). The stable isotope composition of waters (delta2H, delta18O) can be used as a natural tracer of hydrologic processes in systems affected by acid mine drainage. We investigated the delta2H and delta18O values of pore waters from four oxidizing sulfidic mine tailings impoundments in different climatic regions of Chile (Piuquenes at La Andina with Alpine climate, Cauquenes and Carén at El Teniente with Mediterranean climate, and Talabre at the Chuquicamata deposit with hyperarid climate). No clear relationship was found between altitude and isotopic composition. The observed displacement of the tailings pore waters from the local meteoric water line toward higher delta18O values (by approximately +2 per thousand delta18O relative to delta2H) is partly due to water-rock interaction processes, including hydration and O-isotope exchange with sulfates and Fe(III) oxyhydroxides produced by pyrite oxidation. In most tailings, from the saturated zone toward the surface, isotopically different zones can be distinguished. Zone I is characterized by an upward depletion of 2H and 18O in the pore waters from the saturated zone and the lowermost vadose zone, due to ascending diffused isotopically light water triggered by the constant loss of water vapor by evaporation at the surface. In zone II, the capillary flow of a mix of vapor and liquid water causes an evaporative isotopic enrichment in 2H and 18O. At the top of the tailings in dry climate a zone III between the capillary zone and the surface contains isotopically light diffused and atmospheric water vapor. In temperate climates, the upper part of the profile is affected by recent rainfall and zone III may not differ isotopically from zone II.  相似文献

Catalytic steam reforming of a model biogas (CH4/CO2 = 60/40) is investigated to produce H2-rich synthesis gas. Gas engines benefit from synthesis gas fuel in terms of higher efficiency and lower NOx production when compared to raw biogas or CH4. The process is realized in a fixed bed reactor with a Ni-based catalyst on CaO/Al2O3 support. To optimize the performance, the reactor temperature and the amount of excess steam are varied. The experimental results are compared to the theoretical values from thermodynamic calculation and the main trends of CH4 conversion and H2 yield are analyzed and verified. Finally, optimal reactor temperature is pointed out and a range of potential steam to methane ratios is presented. The experimental results will be applied to design a steam reformer at an existing anaerobic biomass fermentation plant in Strem, Austria.  相似文献

Female New Zealand obese (NZO) mice are an established model of preconceptional (pc.) prediabetes that progresses as gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) during gestation. It is known that NZO mice show improvement in insulin sensitivity and glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) during gestation in vivo. The latter is no longer detectable in ex vivo perifusion experiments in isolated islets of Langerhans, suggesting a modulation by extrapancreatic factors. Here, we demonstrated that plasma 17β-estradiol (E2) levels increased markedly in NZO mice during gestation. The aim of this work was to determine whether these increased E2 levels are responsible for the improvement in metabolism during gestation. To achieve this goal, we examined its effects in isolated islets and primary hepatocytes of both NZO and metabolically healthy NMRI mice. E2 increased GSIS in the islets of both strains significantly. Hepatic glucose production (HGP) failed to be decreased by insulin in NZO hepatocytes but was reduced by E2 in both strains. Hepatocytes of pregnant NZO mice showed significantly lower glucose uptake (HGU) compared with NMRI controls, whereby E2 stimulation diminished this difference. Hepatocytes of pregnant NZO showed reduced glycogen content, increased cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) levels, and reduced AKT activation. These differences were abolished after E2 stimulation. In conclusion, our data indicate that E2 stabilizes and prevents deterioration of the metabolic state of the prediabetic NZO mice. E2 particularly increases GSIS and improves hepatic glucose utilization to a lower extent.  相似文献

Gestational diabetes (GDM) is characterized by a glucose tolerance disorder. This may first appear during pregnancy or pre-exist before conception as a form of prediabetes, but there are few data on the pathogenesis of the latter subtype. Female New Zealand obese (NZO) mice serve as a model for this subpopulation of GDM. It was recently shown that GDM is associated with elevated urinary serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) levels, but the role of the biogenic amine in subpopulations with prediabetes remains unclear. 5-HT is synthesized in different tissues, including the islets of Langerhans during pregnancy. Furthermore, 5-HT receptors (HTRs) are expressed in tissues important for the regulation of glucose homeostasis, such as liver and pancreas. Interestingly, NZO mice showed elevated plasma and islet 5-HT concentrations as well as impaired glucose-stimulated 5-HT secretion. Incubation of isolated primary NZO islets with 5-HT revealed an inhibitory effect on insulin and glucagon secretion. In primary NZO hepatocytes, 5-HT aggravated hepatic glucose production (HGP), decreased glucose uptake (HGU), glycogen content, and modulated AKT activation as well as cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) increase, indicating 5-HT downstream modulation. Treatment with an HTR2B antagonist reduced this 5-HT-mediated deterioration of the metabolic state. With its strong effect on glucose metabolism, these data indicate that 5-HT is already a potential indicator of GDM before conception in mice.  相似文献
