The operation principle of the mass-controlled capillary viscometer is presented for a Newtonian liquid. The derived equation for the temporal changes of the mass in a liquid column draining under gravity through a discharge capillary tube accounts self-consistently for the inertial convective term associated with the acceleration effect. Although recent years have seen significant advances in the spatial resolution possible in the transmission electron microscope (TEM), the temporal resolution of most microscopes is limited to video rate at best. This lack of temporal resolution means that our understanding of dynamic processes in materials is extremely limited. High temporal resolution in the TEM can be achieved, however, by replacing the normal thermionic or field emission source with a photoemission source. In this case the temporal resolution is limited only by the ability to create a short pulse of photoexcited electrons in the source, and this can be as short as a few femtoseconds. The operation of the photo-emission source and the control of the subsequent pulse of electrons (containing as many as 5 x 10(7) electrons) create significant challenges for a standard microscope column that is designed to operate with a single electron in the column at any one time. In this paper, the generation and control of electron pulses in the TEM to obtain a temporal resolution <10(-6)s will be described and the effect of the pulse duration and current density on the spatial resolution of the instrument will be examined. The potential of these levels of temporal and spatial resolution for the study of dynamic materials processes will also be discussed. 相似文献

Beam-induced specimen movement may be the major factor that limits the quality of high-resolution images of organic specimens. One of the possible measures to improve the situation that was proposed by Henderson and Glaeser [Ultramicroscopy 16 (1985) 139-150], which we refer to here as "stroboscopic image capture", is to divide the normal exposure into many successive frames, thus reducing the amount of electron exposure--and possibly the amount of beam-induced movement--per frame. The frames would then be aligned and summed. We have performed preliminary experiments on stroboscopic imaging using a 200-kV electron microscope that was equipped with a high dynamic range Charge-coupled device (CCD) camera for image recording and a liquid N2-cooled cryoholder. Single-layer paraffin crystals on carbon film were used as a test specimen. The ratio F(g)/F(0) of paraffin reflections, calculated from the images, serves as our criterion for the image quality. In the series that were evaluated, no significant improvement of the F(image)(g)/F(image)(0) ratio was found, even though the electron exposure per frame was reduced by a factor of 30. A frame-to-frame analysis of image distortions showed that considerable beam-induced movement had still occurred during each frame. In addition, the paraffin crystal lattice was observed to move relative to the supporting carbon film, a fact that cannot be explained as being an electron-optical effect caused by specimen charging. We conclude that a significant further reduction of the dose per frame (than was possible with this CCD detector) will be needed in order to test whether the frame-to-frame changes ultimately become small enough for stroboscopic image capture to show its potential. 相似文献

Nonparametric neighborhood methods for learning entail estimation of class conditional probabilities based on relative frequencies of samples that are "near-neighbors" of a test point. We propose and explore the behavior of a learning algorithm that uses linear interpolation and the principle of maximum entropy (LIME). We consider some theoretical properties of the LIME algorithm: LIME weights have exponential form; the estimates are consistent; and the estimates are robust to additive noise. In relation to bias reduction, we show that near-neighbors contain a test point in their convex hull asymptotically. The common linear interpolation solution used for regression on grids or look-up-tables is shown to solve a related maximum entropy problem. LIME simulation results support use of the method, and performance on a pipeline integrity classification problem demonstrates that the proposed algorithm has practical value. 相似文献

A strategy for a knowledge-based system to detect the interior and exterior boundaries of the left ventricle from time-varying cross-sectional images obtained by ECG-gated magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is discussed. The system uses both fuzzy set theory and Dempster and Shafer theory to manage the knowledge and to control the flow of system information for more efficient use of limited computational resources and memory space. The key to the approach is that it performs edge detection on images through integration and unification of knowledge and information from edge candidates on all the slices and phases of the acquired cardiac MRI dataset. The thickness of a malignant nevus has been found to be an important prognostic factor for patients with melanoma. We have designed a new method of imaging nevi that permits their thickness to be measured in situ. Using fiber optics directed into the surrounding skin, we transilluminate the nevus. Three images are picked up by a digitizing TV camera: the vertical image (90 degrees ), a glancing image (180 degrees ), and one at 45 degrees , obtained by using two front-silvered mirrors held next to the nevus in a "nevoscope." The digitized images are used in a computed tomography algorithm to calculate approximate vertical cross sections of the nevus. The algorithm is one we recently developed to permit reconstruction from a very few projections. Our method is completely noninvasive. It may be used to check all the nevi on a patient. Without excisions, we could establish a baseline three-dimensional shape for each nevus, follow any changes in time, and obtain an early warning of increase in thickness and possible malignancy. 相似文献
