Effects of posttraining injection of cholinergic agonists and antagonists into the amygdala on retention of passive avoidance training in rats.

144 adult male Long-Evans rats were given a single footshock while licking a water tube and tested 24 hrs later for retention of the footshock experience. A single bilateral injection of a subseizure dose of physostigmine into the amygdala applied immediately but not 18 hrs after the footshock impaired retention. This effect appeared to be somewhat localized, as physostigmine injected into the hippocampus or lateral ventricles did not disrupt retention. Conversely, a subseizure dose of atropine sulfate into the amygdala, given immediately or 18 hrs after the footshock did not impair retention. Atropine injected concurrently with physostigmine into the same amygdaloid loci counteracted a potential physostigmine-induced retention deficit. Injection of carbachol into the amygdala also impaired retention; however, carbachol precipitated seizures and possibly exerted proactive consequences on performance. The time-dependent nature of the deficit following physostigmine is consistent with the view that injection of cholinergic agonists into the amygdala disrupts memory for the footshock experience. The fracture toughness of a ferrous maraging alloy containing manganese

A Fe-20 pet Co-15 pet Mn-5 pet Mo maraging alloy has been found to exhibit low toughness and brittle fracture throughout its response to age-hardening. Inter granular embrittlement associated with segregation of manganese and with residual oxygen (15 to 300 ppm) in the early stages of aging was replaced by brittle inter-lath separation as aging progressed, the latter mode being associated with intermetallic precipitation and, possibly, the presence of finely-dispersed austenite.     

The principal replicated factors discovered in objective personality tests.

From some 150 factors in objective personality tests, 18 potentially invariant patterns have been found by cross matching in all possible ways. These are divided into 12 of a satisfactory degree of invariance and universality, and 6 of lesser statistical significance. The former are discussed in this paper. 63 references. Personality correlates of social conformity.

A group of 89 female social welfare case workers were administered the Guilford-Zimmerman Temperament Survey and a social conformity scale developed by the author. The latter comprised 37 items utilizing the direction of perception technique of attitude measurement. For the selected sample, the relationship between the two scales appeared to be limited to a correlation of -.47 between the social conformity scale and the Objectivity scale of the GZ. More on forced-choice test fakability.

This study was made to determine if Gordon's Survey of Interpersonal Values might be subject to faking in a selection situation. A group of 50 College Extension Division students took the test first under a job set and then later under a vocational guidance set. The results from a correlational analysis, and an examination of individual score changes led to the following conclusions: (a) The test author's contention that this type of test (forced-choice format) is minimally susceptible to faking is open to some question in the case of the Survey of Interpersonal Values, (b) In this sample, 19% of the Ss changed their scores to a considerable extent under the 2 different administrative sets. Theory of situational, instrument, second order, and refraction factors in personality structure research.

The determination of personality structure by multivariate experimental methods has led to stable, meaningful results as well as to confusing inconsistencies. Becker (see 35: 6414) has recently criticized the foregoing theoretical position. The present paper presents additional data and further arguments related to the over-all problem. Experimental study of Gas—liquid transfer rates using an inclined perforated tray without downcomer

Gas—liquid interfacial area, liquid phase and gas phase mass transfer coefficients are measured for an inclined perforated plate without downcomer. The influence of geometric and hydrodynamic parameters is investigated experimentally.The existence of optimal geometries and hydrodynamic conditions which yield maximal mass transfer rates is shown. A techno—economic study is carried out which compares usual equipment with the present technique. Possible applications are suggested.
