In color flow imaging (CFI), the rejection of tissue clutter signal is treated separately from blood velocity estimation by high-pass filtering the received Doppler signal. The complete suppression of clutter is then difficult to achieve without affecting the subsequent velocity estimates. In this work, a different approach to velocity estimation is investigated, based on a statistical model of the signal from both clutter and blood. An analytic expression for the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) is developed, and used to determine the existence of an efficient maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) of blood velocity in CFI when assuming full knowledge of the clutter statistics. We further simulate and compare the performance of the MLE to that of the autocorrelation method (ACM) using finite-impulse response (FIR) and polynomial regression clutter filters. Two signal scenarios are simulated, representing a central and peripheral vessel. Simulations showed that, by including 3-9 (independent) spatial points, the MLE variance approached the CRLB in both scenarios. The ACM was approximately unbiased only for the central scenario in the clutter filter pass band, then with a variance of up to four times the CRLB. The ACM suffered from a severe bias in the filter transition region, and a significant performance gain was achieved here using the MLE. For practical use, the clutter properties must be estimated. We finally replaced the known clutter statistics with an estimate obtained from low-rank approximations of the received sample correlation matrix. Used in the model-based framework, this method came close to the performance of the MLE, and it may be an important step toward a practical model-based estimator, including tissue clutter with optimal performance.  相似文献

The theory of active contours models the problem of contour recovery as an energy minimization process. The computational solutions based on dynamic programming require that the energy associated with a contour candidate can be decomposed into an integral of local energy contributions. In this paper we propose a grammatical framework that can model different local energy models and a set of allowable transitions between these models. The grammatical encodings are utilized to represent a priori knowledge about the shape of the object and the associated signatures in the underlying images. The variability encountered in numerical experiments is addressed with the energy minimization procedure which is embedded in the grammatical framework. We propose an algorithmic solution that combines a nondeterministic version of the Knuth-Morris-Pratt algorithm for string matching with a time-delayed discrete dynamic programming algorithm for energy minimization. The numerical experiments address practical problems encountered in contour recovery such as noise robustness and occlusion  相似文献

It is important to determine the severity of valvular regurgitation accurately because surgery is indicated only in severe regurgitations. The evaluation of, for example, mitral regurgitation is complex, and the current methods have limitations. We have developed a 3-D Doppler method to estimate the cross-sectional area and the geometry of a regurgitant jet at the vena contracta just downstream from the actual orifice. The back-scattered Doppler signal from multiple beams distributed over the area of interest was measured. The received power from these beams was then calibrated using both a priori knowledge of the lateral extent of the beams and a reference beam that was completely enclosed by the vena contracta. To isolate the Doppler signal received from the core of a regurgitant jet, a high pulse repetition frequency and a steep clutter filter are required. The method has been implemented and verified by computer simulations and by in vitro experiments using a pulsatile flow phantom and prosthetic valves with a range of holes. We were able to distinguish between mild, moderate, and severe valvular regurgitation. We were also able to quantify the regurgitational area as well as show the geometry of the regurgitation.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of variety, soil type and fertilisation, and the interactions between these factors, on yield and quality traits of carrots. RESULTS: Optimum fertilisation levels for yield and quality of grade one roots were found to be between 80 and 160 kg ha?1 for nitrogen and between 0 and 120 kg ha?1 for potassium depending on soil type and precipitation. Carrots grown in peat soil had the highest score for sweetness and the lowest scores for negatively associated characteristics such as bitterness, earthy flavour, terpene flavour and firmness. Nitrate content and the amounts of splitted and forked roots were lowest on sandy soil. Variety significantly affected number of grade 1 roots, dry matter, nitrate content and most of the sensory attributes tested. Interactions between variety, soil type and nitrogen fertilisation were found for most of the tested quality characteristics. CONCLUSION: The investigations showed that year and variety had the highest impact on the carrot quality attributes studied, whereas soil type and fertilisation had less influence. Peat soil and moderate fertilisation with N and K gave optimal sensory quality while sand soil gave optimal quality as regards morphological characters like splitting and forking of roots as well as nitrate content. For ultrasound color flow images with high quality, it is important to suppress the clutter signals originating from stationary and slowly moving tissue sufficiently. Without sufficient clutter rejection, low velocity blood flow cannot be measured, and estimates of higher velocities will have a large bias. The small number of samples available (8 to 16) makes clutter filtering in color flow imaging a challenging problem. In this paper, we review and analyze three classes of filters: finite impulse response (FIR), infinite impulse response (IIR), and regression filters. The quality of the filters was assessed based on the frequency response, as well as on the bias and variance of a mean blood velocity estimator using an autocorrelation technique. For FIR filters, the frequency response was improved by allowing a non-linear phase response. By estimating the mean blood flow velocity from two vectors filtered in the forward and backward direction, respectively, the standard deviation was significantly lower with a minimum phase filter than with a linear phase filter. For IIR filters applied to short signals, the transient part of the output signal is important. We analyzed zero, step, and projection initialization, and found that projection initialization gave the best filters. For regression filters, polynomial basis functions provide effective clutter suppression. The best filters from each of the three classes gave comparable bias and variance of the mean blood velocity estimates. However, polynomial regression filters and projection-initialized IIR filters had a slightly better frequency response than could be obtained with FIR filters  相似文献

A new species of Fusarium, Fusarium langsethiae, is described, illustrated and discussed. This species is isolated from kernels of oats, wheat and barley in several European countries. Morphologically, the species resembles Fusarium poae. It is differentiated from F. poae by slower growth, less aerial mycelium and absence of odour; its napiform or globose conidia are borne in the aerial mycelium on the agar surface on often bent phialides which exhibit sometimes more than one opening, whereas those of F. poae are produced on straight monophialides mostly in the aerial mycelium. No sporodochial conidia are formed by F. langsethiae even under near-UV light (nUV). Based on morphological characters, the species is placed in the section Sporotrichiella.  相似文献

A new method for detecting ultrasound contrast agents using a three-stage pulsing sequence is proposed. The method is based on observations showing that the scattering properties of contrast agents are modified by ultrasonic insonation at high power, but remain unchanged at low power. The objective of the first stage of the pulsing sequence is to use low power pulses to obtain a high resolution reference image without altering the agent. Higher power pulses in the second stage modify the contrast agent. The third stage detects the changes imposed to the contrast agent using low power pulses. A temporal filter is proposed to discriminate contrast response from clutter signal. The method is similar to power Doppler methods in that it uses several pulses to survey the target while destroying the agent. The new idea is to separate detection and destruction to circumvent a trade-off between sensitivity and resolution. Results from in vitro experiments with three different contrast agents are presented. The results are compared with harmonic power Doppler processed from the same data and show that an improvement in sensitivity is achievable by including the high power burst in the pulsing sequence. Interventricular septum thickness in end-diastole (IVSd) is one of the key parameters in cardiology. This paper presents a fast algorithm, suitable for pocket-sized ultrasound devices, for measurement of IVSd using 2D B-mode parasternal long axis images. The algorithm is based on a deformable model of the septum and the mitral valve. The model shape is estimated using an extended Kalman filter. A feasibility study using 32 unselected recordings is presented. The recordings originate from a database consisting of subjects from a normal healthy population. Five patients with suspected hypertrophy were included in the study. Reference B-mode measurements were made by two cardiologists. A paired t-test revealed a non-significant mean difference, compared to the B-mode reference, of (mean±SD) 0.14±1.36 mm (p=0.532). Pearson's correlation coefficient was 0.79 (p<0.001). The results are comparable to the variability between the two cardiologists, which was found to be 1.29±1.23 mm (p<0.001). The results indicate that the method has potential as a tool for rapid assessment of IVSd.  相似文献
