Two-level optimal output feedback stabilizer design

Design of two-level system stabilizers is considered using an optimal reduced-order model whose state variables are torque angles and speeds. The reduced-order model retains their physical meaning and is used to design a two-level linear feedback controller that takes into account the realities and constraints of the electrical power systems. The two-level control strategy is used, and a global control signal is generated from the output variables to minimize the effect of interaction. The effectiveness of this controller is evaluated, and an example, the multimachine system, is given to illustrate the advantages of the proposed method. The responses of the system with the two-level scheme and optimal reduced order scheme are included for comparative analyses

Effect of Oxygen Partial Pressure during Sintering on the Microstructure of Mg-PSZ with Strontia and Silica Additions

The microstructure, average grain size, and density of Mg-PSZ sintered with SrO and SiO₂ additions are found to depend on the partial pressure of oxygen in the sintering atmosphere. Over the range of 10⁻¹ to 10° atm, both the average grain size and the density increase with oxygen partial pressure, for a constant SrO/SiO₂ ratio. The partial pressure of oxygen also affects the microstructural distribution of the remnant liquid phase. At high partial pressures the liquid phase is uniformly distributed, whereas at lower oxygen pressures it is preferentially located near the surface. It is proposed that the microstructure produced by sintering is the result of a competition between liquid-phase-enhanced densification and the migration of the liquid phase to the free surface. The migration is attributed to vaporization of MgO from the liquid phase which increases with decreasing partial pressure of oxygen.     

Asymptotic deformation and stress fields at the tip of a sharp notch in an elastic-plastic material

The singular elastic-plastic stress, strain and the displacement fields at the tip of a sharp notch for both plane stress and plane strain conditions are investigated analytically. The material is assumed to be governed by the deformation theory of plasticity with linear strain hardening characteristic. Since the elastic strain is retained in the analysis, the final strain and displacement fields can be separated into the elastic and the plastic parts. In the case with zero notch angle, the results reduce to the classical crack problem. The relationship of the amplitude of the near crack tip elastic-plastic field to the elastic far field is obtained. Both mode I and mode II cases are investigated. The mixed mode case is also discussed.

Determination of Boundary Shear Stress and Reynolds Shear Stress in Smooth Rectangular Channel Flows

A method for computing three-dimensional Reynolds shear stresses and boundary shear stress distribution in smooth rectangular channels is developed by applying an order of magnitude analysis to integrate the Reynolds equations. A simplified relationship between the lateral and vertical terms is hypothesized for which the Reynolds equations become solvable. This relationship has the form of a power law with an exponent of n = 1, 2, or infinity. The semiempirical equations for the boundary shear distribution and the distribution of Reynolds shear stresses are compared with measured data in open channels. The power-law exponent of 2 gave the best overall results while n=infinity gave good results near the boundary.
