Behavior of some parameters of lipid and energy metabolism. 1. Behavior of the stationary concentrations of acetyl CoA, acetoacetate and adenosine phosphates in liver, as well as oxygen consumption and P/O ratios in liver homogenates of growing rats on diets differing in fat content

Young rats were maintained on diets differing in fat content. The determination of certain parameters of the lipid and the energy metabolism in the liver showed that a high-fat diet resulted in a reduction of the stationary level of acetyl CoA, an increase in the concentration of acetoacetate and a reduction of the adenosine triphosphate content and the so-called energy charge. In case of intact respiratory chain phosphorylation, the oxygen consumption of the respective liver homogenates was simultaneously increased. The results obtained with a high-fat diet are indicative of the attainment of a metabolic state which seems to be typical of metabolic regulations in growing rats subjected to anabolic lipometabolism.     

A reconsideration of bilateral language representation based on the intracarotid amobarbital procedure

Hemispheric language dominance was established for 368 epilepsy surgery candidates based on results of objective language performance during the intracarotid amobarbital procedure. Eight-three percent of patients were found to be left hemisphere dominant, while six percent were right dominant, and eleven percent demonstrated some degree of bilateral language representation. Bilateral patients were grouped according to modality-specific patterns of language performance in each hemisphere, with a majority demonstrating left hemisphere superiority in overall language processing. Variables affecting atypical language development are reviewed and results are considered in the context of previous research.     

Successful induction and consolidation therapy of acute myeloid leukaemia in a renal allograft recipient

Immunosuppressed organ transplant recipients have a markedly increased risk of neoplasia. Among these malignancies acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) is rare. However, until now no case of successful chemotherapy has been reported. We present a 39-year-old male patient who developed AML (FAB M4 Eo) 4 years after renal transplantation and achieved a stable complete remission after induction therapy with standard dose cytarabine and daunorubicin. Remission duration is now 11 months. At present the transplant is functioning well after two additional courses of consolidation chemotherapy with high-dose cytarabine combined with mitoxantrone and idarubicine respectively. Cyclosporin A was given during all cycles of chemotherapy. We conclude that intensive chemotherapy in patients with AML following renal transplantation in good performance status is feasible.     

Semantic ambient media: From ambient advertising to ambient-assisted living

The term ambient media was in its beginning used only for ambient advertising. Nowadays it denotes the media environment and the communication of information in ubiquitous and pervasive environments. With the addition of intelligence, the new field of semantic ambient media was established. In recent years, the field of semantic ambient media has spread its span from only a few sub-areas, such as ambient advertising, to new ones, such as ambient-assisted living (AAL) and health-monitoring media, significantly supported by intelligence. The study presented in this paper provides an advanced introduction to the field of semantic ambient media including the solutions for threat issues and illustration of success stories of the field. It conducts a survey of the related work and presents a thorough discussion of it. The related work is grouped according to the coverage of the principles of semantic ambient media. Based on the state-of-the-art research, the future possibilities of the field are demonstrated, especially for the ambient-assisted living, audio-visual rendering of media objects, user design principles and the society impact of the field. The paper provides ideas for impacting ambient media and directions and questions for further research. It also discusses the potential of the combination of several research studies.     

Death in the milieu of homeless persons. A comparative retrospective analysis of an autopsy sample of different regional population structures (Middle Hessia/Hamburg)

For an evaluation concerning different regional population and community characteristics, 23 fatalities of homeless individuals were selected from the current autopsy series of the Institutes of Legal Medicine of Giessen/Germany and Hamburg/Germany from 1990 to 1996. The outcome of this retrospective analysis enables to overcome the deficiency of knowledge of causes, manners and circumstances of death among homeless individuals.
