OPTIMIZATION OF REDUNDANCY IN WATER DISTRIBUTION NETWORKS USING GRAPH THEORETIC PRINCIPLES

An integer goal programming based approach to maximize reliability in water distribution networks is developed. Previous work has shown that graphs which are inherently the most invulnerable to failure have the same number of links incident at each node, i.e. they are regular in degree. The converse of this statement is not true. Regular graphs can contain weaknesses such as bridges, articulation nodes, and even total disconnections. The integer goal programming formulation in this paper is combined with a procedure which recognizes both explicit and implicit articulation points within the water distribution network to ensure that such weaknesses are excluded from the final solution. The integer program component of the approach attempts to maximize regularity within the network. In the goal programming context this is achieved by minimizing the sum of the deviations, at each node, in terms of the number of links incident upon it, from the average number of links incident on a node over the whole network. The integer requirement is imposed to prevent non-integer numbers of links being selected by the model.     

A METHOD OF OBTAINING LANGMUIR-HINSHELWOOD PARAMETERS FROM PULSED MICROCATALYTIC REACTORS

A method of calculating first-order Langmuir-Hinshelwood parameters from a rectifying plot is presented. This plot is based on the variation of conversion with pulse volume in a pulsed microcatalytic reactor. The method has been extended to treat the cases of (a) carrier gas participation in the kinetics, and (b) change in volume during reaction. It is possible to extend the method to other irreversible kinetic expressions as well. A non-broadening Gaussian pulse and other simplifying assumptions are made which allow an analytical solution for the instantaneous conversion in the pulse. The method is applied to calculate the values of the Langmuir-Hinshelwood parameters for the hydrogenation of propylene over unsupported molybdenum sulfide. The decrease in volume during this reaction has little effect on the estimated values of the kinetic parameters; the rectifying plot based on the equation neglecting volume change gives approximately the same results as that based on the equation accounting for volume change.

RESOLUTIONS OF THE CHICAGO CONFERENCE ON THE PROFESSIONAL PREPARATION OF CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGISTS WERE RESPONSES TO NUMEROUS SOURCES OF STRAIN WITHIN THE PROFESSION. THE VIABILITY OF THOSE RESOLUTIONS REQUIRES EMPIRICAL TESTING, AND AN ATTEMPT IS MADE TO ILLUSTRATE HOW ISSUES RAISED BY THE CONFERENCE HAVE BEEN DEALT WITH IN 1 DEPARTMENT. EXPERIENCE SUGGESTS THAT A GRADUATE PROFESSIONAL SCHOOL IS A FERTILE SETTING FOR IMPLEMENTING MANY OF THE RESOLUTIONS, BUT THAT THERE ARE DIFFICULTIES INVOLVED AS WELL. The future-oriented concept of computer-integrated, flexibly automated manufacture reveals the first convincing results at present. They indicate a fundamental change of production modes. Due to the transition from order-neutral manufacture to manufacture bound by order, targets are developing that have to be met by flexible solutions of process automation of a new type. Finally, in order to achieve high flexibility of manufacture, monitoring and control strategies of a new type have to be developed. Tool monitoring is the focus of process monitoring. This will be shown by raised technological machine intelligence of flexible automated turning cells with the main components of sensor systems, control concept and process models for monitoring and control strategies. The process invariance to be aimed at for process monitoring now involves the development of such strategies applicable for a maximum value range of a maximum number of process, tool and machine tool parameters. For adaptive control systems at machining cells, the actual available machining time mentioned has to be included into the technological process model as a basis for self-optimization     

Band-aid or Panacea? The Role of Private Rental Support Programs in Addressing Access Problems in the Australian Housing Market

Australia has a significant private rental market with over a quarter of households renting their home from a private landlord. Many of these households are on low incomes and receive assistance from private rental support programs provided by each Australian state and territory. In spite of these large numbers, little is known about the effectiveness of policy initiatives to assist low-income private renters. Limited knowledge of the private rental support programs stands in stark contrast to the detailed research on programs established to address homelessness and problems within the public housing sector. This paper addresses this lacuna by reporting on the suite of initiatives currently funded by state governments to assist low-income households (for example, bond loans and rental deposits, advice and help with removal expenses). Based on a comprehensive study of Private Rental Support Programs (PRSPs) commissioned by the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute, it is argued that though policies to assist vulnerable tenants are acknowledged as a success by practitioners and clients, their effectiveness as a policy instrument is undermined by wider structural changes in the housing market. The paper concludes that the stress faced by many vulnerable households is likely to intensify over the coming years thereby compounding the pressure on state Housing Authorities to provide more comprehensive packages of support that extend beyond just a ‘one-off’ form of assistance.
