The role of brown adipose tissue in the mechanism of medium chain triglyceride (MCT)-induced thermogenesis was investigated. Under anesthesia, the interscapular brown adipose tissue (IBAT) was excised in male Sprague-Dawley rats, and the animals were fitted with gastrostomy tubes. After a 10-day recovery period, the animals were divided into two groups: one group received a diet containing MCT as 50% of calories, and the other group received an isocaloric diet containing long chain triglyceride (LCT). The diets were fed for 6 wk at a level of calorie intake that was 150% of the ad libitum intake of a parallel control group. During the last week of the study, resting and norepinephrine (NE)-stimulated O2 consumption and CO2 production were measured in a Noyons diaferometer. At the end of 6 wk, the animals were weighed and killed. The individual fat pads were dissected and weighed, and an aliquot of the right retroperitoneal fat pad was used to measure adipocyte size and number. The results showed that body weight and adipocyte size (but not adipocyte number) were significantly smaller in the MCT-fed compared to the LCT-fed animals. Resting as well as maximal NE-stimulated oxygen consumption values were significantly higher in the MCT-fed than the LCT-fed rats. It is concluded that the enhanced thermogenesis induced by MCT persists despite the absence of IBAT and that the phenomenon is likely related to more extensive oxidation of MCT-in contrast to LCT-derived fatty acids, thus leading to increased oxygen consumption, enhanced dissipation of energy as heat and diminished efficiency of weight gain and deposition of body fat. The fixed oil from the seeds of 舠White Todri舡,Matthiola incana, R.Br. (Cruciferae), of Indian origin, has been studied for its component acids. The fatty acid composition was found to be myristic (2.60%), palmitic (4.73%), steric (4.37%), arachidic (2.50%), lignoceric (?) (0.73%), oleic (32.17%), linoleic (21.70%), linolenic (10.70%), erucic (13.10%), and resin acids (7.40%).  相似文献

Central venous catheterization is frequently performed for perioperative management and long-term intravenous access. Although complications associated with central venous catheter insertion have been widely reported, there are few reports of carotid-jugular arteriovenous fistula formation. Endovascular procedures are associated with a risk of immediate and delayed thromboembolic and ischemic complications. We describe a case of a carotid-jugular arteriovenous fistula and a cerebrovascular infarct following the insertion of a double-lumen catheter for hemodialysis access. We provide recommendations for the prevention and the early detection of this iatrogenic complication.  相似文献

Experimentally measured diffusion coefficients of nitrous oxide in water, aqueous solutions of diethanolamine, aqueous solutions of N-methyldiethanolamine, and aqueous blends of diethanolamine and N-methyldiethanolamine have been used to arrive at a modified Stokes-Einstein correlation by using nonlinear least-squares filling. The average deviation of this correlation from the experimentally measured diffusion coefficients is about 13%. Comparisons are also made to the estimated diffusivities of nitrous oxide in the amine solutions which are obtained from the Wilke-Chang and Hayduk-Minhas correlations. The average deviations of the Wilke-Chang and Hayduk-Minhas correlations from the measured values are about 13% and 19%, respectively. Correlations were also presented for estimating the solution densities and viscosities. Predicted values for the solution densities and viscosities from these correlations deviate from experimentally measured values on average by 1.2% and 4.8% respectively.  相似文献

Measurements of the monthly average daily global and global ultraviolet solar radiation over a period of three years (1985, 1986, 1987) in Kuwait are reported. Over the three years the computed yearly daily means for the above solar radiation components were 5.592 kW h/m2 and 0.260 kW h/m2. The effect of atmospheric dust on the measured solar radiation components is investigated. Employing the least-square linear regression analysis an estimated empirical function relating global radiation to ultraviolet radiation was proposed for the past three years' measurements.  相似文献

Despite the powerful spectroscopic information it provides, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy suffers from a lack of sensitivity, especially when dealing with nuclei other than protons. Even though NMR can be applied in a straightforward manner when dealing with abundant protons of organic molecules, it is very challenging to address biomolecules in low concentration and/or many other nuclei of the periodic table that do not provide as intense signals as protons. Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) is an important technique that provides a way to dramatically increase signal intensities in NMR. It consists in transferring the very high electron spin polarization of paramagnetic centers (usually at low temperature) to the surrounding nuclear spins with appropriate microwave irradiation. DNP can lead to an enhancement of the nuclear spin polarization by up to four orders of magnitude. We present in this article some basic concepts of DNP, describe the DNP apparatus at EPFL, and illustrate the interest of the technique for chemical applications by reporting recent measurements of the kinetics of complexation of 89Y by the DOTAM ligand.  相似文献

The first wetting layer on solid nanoparticles has direct implications on the roles these particles play in industrial processes and technological applications as well as in the atmosphere. We present a technique for online measurements of the adsorption of the first few water layers onto insoluble aerosol nanoparticles. Atomized fumed silica nanoparticles were dispersed from aqueous suspension and their hygroscopic growth factors (HGF) and number of the adsorbed water layers at subsaturated conditions were measured using a nanometer hygroscopic tandem differential mobility analyzer (HTDMA). Particle morphology was characterized by electron microscopy and particle density was determined by mobility analysis. The HGFs of the size-selected particles at mobility diameters from 10 to 50 nm at 90% relative humidity (RH) varied from 1.05 to 1.24, corresponding to 2–6 layers of adsorbed water. The morphology of the generated fumed silica nanoparticles varied from spheres at 8–10 nm to agglomerates at larger diameters with effective density from 1.7 to 0.8 g/cm3 and fractal dimension of 2.6. The smallest spheres and agglomerates had the highest HGFs. The smallest particles with diameters of 8 and 10 nm adsorbed two to three water layers in subsaturated conditions, which agreed well with the Frenkel, Halsey, and Hill (FHH) isotherm fitting. In comparison to the small spheres or large agglomerates, the compact agglomerate structure containing a few primary particles increased the number of adsorbed water layers by a factor of ~1.5. This was probably caused by the capillary effect on the small cavities between the primary particles in the agglomerate.  相似文献

In the context of water as an economic good, from the use of water, one can derive a value, which can be affected by the reliability of supply. On-demand irrigation systems provide valuable water to skilled farmers who have the capacity to maximize economic value of water. In this study, simultaneous optimization of on-demand irrigation network layout and pipe sizes is considered taking into account both investment and annual energy costs. The optimization problem is formulated as a problem of searching for the upstream head value, which minimizes the total cost (investment and energy costs) of the system. The investment and annual energy costs are obtained in two separate phases. Max–Min ant system (MMAS) algorithm is used to obtain the minimum cost design considering layout and pipe diameters of the network simultaneously. Clement methodology is used to determine flow rates of pipelines at the peak period of irrigation requirements. The applicability of the proposed method is showed by re-designing a real world example from literature.  相似文献

An extensive database of full-scale field load tests was used to examine the bearing capacity for footings in cohesionless soils. Each load test curve was evaluated consistently to determine the interpreted failure load (i.e., bearing capacity) using the L1-L2 method. This test value then was compared with the theoretical bearing capacity, computed primarily using the basic Vesi? model. The comparisons show that, for footing widths B>1?m, the field results agree very well with the Vesi? predictions. However, for B<1?m, the results indicated a relationship between B and the predicted-to-measured bearing capacity ratio. Accordingly, a simple modification was made to the bearing capacity equation, and the resulting predictions are very good.  相似文献
