On a bounded solution to a pair of coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations

We present a bounded, decaying solution to a pair of coupled, nonlinear second-order ordinary differential equations arising in the theory of natural convection. The solution is found by transforming the problem into a non-autonomous system in the phase-plane. A uniqueness proof is given for the bounded solution.     

Targets and methods for the detection of processed animal proteins in animal feedstuffs

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), or ‘mad cow disease’, is one of several transmissable spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) known to affect certain mammals and is spread through the ingestion of infected animal tissue. It is believed that the inadvertent contamination of meat and bone meal (MBM) with infected animal tissue and the subsequent use of this material as a feed supplement contributed to the spread of the disease in cattle. As a result, the use of processed animal proteins (PAPs) in animal feeds is regulated in many parts of the world. Although feed testing is the only definitive means to certify compliance, regulatory compliance often relies solely on paper certification. Recently, rapid methods have become available that can be used by regulators to determine compliance during routine inspections. We describe a rapid, immunochromatographic strip test that can detect 0.1% MBM in animal feed. The test takes 15 min to perform and large numbers of samples can be screened for PAPs simultaneously.     

Study of miscibility enhancement in poly(styrene‐co‐4‐vinylphenol)/poly(ethylene oxide) blends by the spin labelling method

The electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra of end‐group spin labelled poly(ethylene oxide) (SLPEO) using 2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐piperdine‐1‐oxyl nitroxide and its blends with poly(styrene‐co‐4‐vinylphenol) (STVPhs) of different hydroxyl contents were recorded over a wide temperature range. For a blend of SLPEO and pure polystyrene (PS), the ESR spectrum was composed of a single motion component, indicating that PS was immiscible with PEO. For blends composed of SLPEO and different‐hydroxyl‐content STVPhs, two spectral components with different motion rates were observed over a certain temperature range. The difference between the motion rates should be attributed to micro‐heterogeneity in the blends, with the faster rate corresponding to a nitroxide radical motion trapped in the PEO‐rich domain and the slower rate corresponding to a nitroxide radical motion trapped in the STVPh‐rich domain. Variations in the values of a number of the ESR parameters (T_a, T_d and T_50G) and the apparent activation energy (E_a) with hydroxyl content in the blends indicated that the miscibility of the blends increased with increasing hydrogen‐bonding density due to specific interactions between the hydroxyl groups in STVPh and the ether oxygens in PEO. Grafting of maleic anhydride onto polyethylene through a green chemistry approach

The grafting of a polymer can lead to the improvement and modification of the polymer and thus expand its applications. Grafting methods include solution grafting in organic solvents, melt grafting at high temperatures, and light grafting with radioactive sources. These methods have their advantages and disadvantages. The disadvantages include waste treatment, consumption of energy, and so on. In this study, a hydrothermal process which is called the green approach, was developed to prepare graft copolymers. Non-invasive headspace measurement for characterizing oxygen-scavenging in polymers

A non-invasive headspace analysis method to measure rate and amount of oxygen uptake in oxygen-scavenging polymers is presented. Oxygen uptake data for metal-catalyzed poly(1,4-butadiene) at 30 °C are provided to illustrate the method. These data were obtained by measuring oxygen headspace concentration above the scavenging polymer with an OxySense^® 200T non-invasive oxygen sensor, and, for comparison, oxygen uptake was measured with an analytical balance. Excellent agreement was observed between these two independent experiments.     

Synthesis,extraction, and adsorption properties of calix[4]arene‐poly(ethylene‐glycol) crosslinked polymer

Novel calix[4]arene‐poly(ethylene glycol) crosslinked polymer (CCP) has been synthesized by the polycondensation reaction between a p‐tert‐butylcalix[4]arene derivative and dihydroxyl capped poly(ethylene glycol) (DHPEG, M_n = 1000) catalyzed by neodymium tosylate. The hydrogel, consisted of 66.9% water and 33.1% CCP, can selectively extract aromatic organic molecules from aqueous solution according to the diameter of the guest molecules, which infers that the diameter of the calix[4]arene cavity is about 5.4 Å and the conformation of calix[4]arene units altered from cone conformation to 1,3‐alternate conformation during the polycondensation reaction. Furthermore, CCP can also adsorb naphthalene from gas phase, showing much higher capacity than active carbon does, which may have some potential applications in the field of separation and environment protection. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Aspects of social and emotional competence in adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Social and emotional competence were evaluated using self-report and behavioral measures in adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and controls. Adults with ADHD viewed themselves as less socially competent but more sensitive toward violations of social norms than controls. Films depicting emotional interactions were used to assess linguistic properties of free recall and perceived emotional intensity. Although adults with ADHD used more words to describe the scenes, they used fewer emotion-related words, despite rating the emotions depicted as more intense than did controls. In contrast, no group differences for words depicting social or cognitive processes were observed. Overall, adults with ADHD appear more aware of their problems in social versus emotional skills. Hypnosis and clinical pain.

Hypnosis has been demonstrated to reduce analogue pain, and studies on the mechanisms of laboratory pain reduction have provided useful applications to clinical populations. Studies showing central nervous system activity during hypnotic procedures offer preliminary information concerning possible physiological mechanisms of hypnotic analgesia. Randomized controlled studies with clinical populations indicate that hypnosis has a reliable and significant impact on acute procedural pain and chronic pain conditions, Methodological issues of this body of research are discussed, as are methods to better integrate hypnosis into comprehensive pain treatment. 用穿透法测量声速时初始点的选择问题

用穿透方法测量岩心或固体的声速时，从测量波形中确定纵波（或横波）的到达时刻（或称初始点）比较困难，当声波的频率比较低时，其误差对测量结果影响比较大。本文用相位分析的方法研究了初始点的选择问题。首先，用各向同性较强、均匀的汉白玉制作标准件，测量其不同传播距离的波形，再用相位补偿的方法得到其传播速度；其次，利用传播速度，可从不同距离的测量波形中确定初始点及其对应的测量系统的时间延迟常数；最后，确定波形的其他位置为初始点时对应的时间延迟常数，因此，我们可以根据实际测量波形的特点选择最佳的初始点，利用其对应的时间延迟常数得到比较精确的声速。模型测量结果表明，初始点位置不同，其对应的测量系统的时间延迟常数也不同，也即测量系统的时间延迟常数是与初始点的选择相对应的。
