The prevalence of foodborne illnesses is continually on rise. In the U.S.A., Escherichia coli O157:H7 (E. coli) has been associated with several outbreaks in minimally processed foods. Spinach and lettuce pose higher food safety risks and recurring food recalls suggest the insufficiency of current disinfection strategies. We aimed at offering a natural antimicrobial alternative using organic acids (malic, tartaric, and lactic acids [MA, TA, and LA, respectively]) and grape seed extract (GSE) and a novel application method using electrostatic spraying to evenly distribute the antimicrobials onto produce. Spinach and lettuce samples were washed, sanitized with sodium hypochlorite solution (6.25 mL/L), dip inoculated in water containing E. coli (7.0 log CFU/mL) for 24 h, and rewashed with sterile water to remove nonadhered pathogens. The samples were sprayed electrostatically with MA, LA, and GSE alone and in combinations and for comparison, with phosphoric acid (PA) and pH controls with deionized water adjusted to 1.5/2.3/3.6 and stored at 4 °C. When combined with LA (3%), MA (3%) showed 2.1 to 4.0 log CFU/g reduction of E. coli between the days 1 and 14 on spinach and 1.1 to 2.5 log CFU/g reduction on lettuce. Treatment with PA (1.5%) and PA (1.5%)-GSE (2%) exhibited 1.1 to 2.1 log CFU/g inhibition of E. coli on spinach during the 14-d storage. Our findings demonstrated the efficacy of electrostatic spraying of MA, LA, and GSE on fresh produce to improve the safety and lower the public health burden linked to produce contamination. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Electrostatic spraying is an emerging technique that can be adopted to improve the distribution and application of antimicrobials during fresh produce sanitation. Relatively simple and quick, the process can access most/all parts of produce surface and offer protection from food pathogens. The use of malic and lactic acids with or without grape seed extract can serve as effective antimicrobials when sprayed electrostatically, lowering the risk from postcontamination issues with spinach and iceberg lettuce. This application technology can be extended to improve the commercial food safety of other produce, fruits, poultry, and meat.  相似文献

ZnO films were deposited onto glass, ITO coated glass, and sapphire substrate by spray pyrolysis, and subsequently annealed at the same temperature of 400°C for 3 h. The role of substrate on the properties of ZnO films was investigated. The structural and optical properties of the films were investigated by X‐ray diffractometer (XRD) and photoluminescence (PL) spectrophotometer, respectively. The surface morphology of the nanostructured ZnO film was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Crystallographic properties revealed that the ZnO films deposited on sapphire and ITO substrates exhibit a strong c‐axis orientation of grains with hexagonal wurtzite structure. Extremely high UV emission intensity was determined in the film on ITO. The different luminescence behaviors was discussed, which would be caused by least value of strain in the film. Films grown on different substrates revealed differences in the morphology. ZnO films on ITO and sapphire substrates revealed better morphology than that of the film on glass. AFM images of the films prepared on ITO show uniform distribution of grains with large surface roughness, suitable for application in dye sensitized solar cells. Microsc. Res. A Nb-microalloyed structural steel with ferrite-pearlite microstructure was subjected to cold rolling and intercritical annealing to produce ultra-fine grained dual phase microstructure. Optical and transmission electron microscopy techniques were employed to characterise the microstructure. Initial results showed that the intercritical annealing (at 790°C for 90s) of samples rolled to a true strain of 2.4 resulted in a significant grain refinement from the average initial grain size of 20 μm to 1–2 microns. The microstructure primarily consisted of UFG ferrite matrix with homogeneously distributed islands of plate martensite with volume fraction of 27%.  相似文献

The development of a safe and efficient method for hydrogen storage is essential for the use of hydrogen with fuel cells for vehicular applications. Hollow glass microspheres (HGMs) have characteristics suitable for hydrogen storage and are expected to be a potential hydrogen carrier to be used for energy release applications. The HGMs with 10–100 μm diameters, 100–1000 Å pore width and 3–8 μm wall thicknesses are expected to be useful for hydrogen storage. In our research we have prepared HGMs from amber glass powder of particle size 63–75 μm using flame spheroidisation method. The HGMs samples with magnesium and iron loading were also prepared to improve the heat transfer property and thereby increase the hydrogen storage capacity of the product. The feed glass powder was impregnated with calculated amount of magnesium nitrate hexahydrate salt solution to get 0.2–3.0 wt% Mg loading on HGMs. Required amount of ferrous chloride tetrahydrate solution was mixed thoroughly with the glass feed powder to prepare 0.2–2 wt% Fe loaded HGMs. Characterizations of all the HGMs samples were done using FEG-SEM, ESEM and FTIR techniques. Adsorption of hydrogen on all the Fe and Mg loaded HGMs at 10 bar pressure was conducted at room temperature and at 200 °C, for 5 h. The hydrogen adsorption capacity of Fe loaded sample was about 0.56 and 0.21 weight percent for Fe loading 0.5 and 2.0 weight percentage respectively. The magnesium loaded samples showed an increase of hydrogen adsorption from 1.23 to 2.0 weight percentage when the magnesium loading percentage was increased from 0 to 2.0. When the magnesium loading on HGMs was increased beyond 2%, formation of nano-crystals of MgO and Mg was seen on the HGMs leading to pore closure and thereby reduction in hydrogen storage capacity.  相似文献

In this paper we report the chemical grafting of polyaniline onto the radiation crosslinked chitosan. Chitosan is crosslinked using 8 MeV electron beam and Co60 γ-ray in the presence of CCl4 as sensitizer. The so-obtained crosslinked chitosan is grafted with polyaniline (PANI) chemically using ammonium peroxy disulphate (APS) as an initiator. Grafted polymer is characterized by dissolution, swelling, UV–vis–NIR spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis, DC conductivity and nanoindentation studies. From the dissolution studies, grafting of PANI onto the crosslinked chitosan is confirmed. From the weight of films before and after grafting, grafting percentage is calculated. Grafting percentage increases as the monomer concentration increases and decreases with increase in crosslinking. This may be due to the decrease in the penetration of monomer onto the chitosan matrix with increase in crosslinking density. This is verified from SEM (cross-sectional view) of blend. UV–vis–NIR spectrum shows absorption peaks of PANI. Electrical property of grafted polymer is improved after doping with 1 M HCl. The change in volume conductivity is from 10−11 to 10−5 S/cm and surface conductivity from 10−10 to 10−2 S/cm. From TGA it is observed that grafted polymer and doped polymer are thermally stable.  相似文献

The temperature dependence of enthalpy increment (H T H 298) of 9 mass% Cr–1 mass% W–0.23 mass% V–0.06 mass% Ta–0.09 mass% C reduced activation steel has been measured by inverse drop calorimetry in the temperature range 400 K to 1273 K. A critical comparison of present isothermal enthalpy measurements with the results of our previous dynamic calorimetry studies has been made to reveal clearly the occurrence of various diffusional phase transformations that occur at high temperature. These phase changes are marked by the presence of distinct inflections or cusps in an overall nonlinear variation of enthalpy values with temperature. The principal thermal relaxation step of the martensitic microstructure obtained through quenching from the high-temperature γ-austenite phase is observed around 793 K. The ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic transition of the α-ferrite phase is found to occur at 1015 K. The equilibrium values of γ-austenite start (Ae 1) and finish (Ae 3) temperatures are found to be 1063 K and 1148 K, respectively. A value of 12 J · g−1 has been estimated for Δ°H αγ the latent heat associated with the αγ transformation. The measured enthalpy increment variation of the α-ferrite phase with temperature has been fitted to a suitable empirical function to estimate the temperature-dependent values of the specific heat. A comparison of the drop calorimetry-based indirect estimate of the specific heat with the direct differential scanning calorimetry-based values revealed that the drop calorimetry estimates are systematically lower than its dynamic calorimetry counterpart. This difference is attributed to the fact that, under finite heating rate conditions that are typical of dynamic calorimetry, measurements are made under nonequilibrium conditions. Notwithstanding this limitation, there is a good overall agreement between the two C p values and also among the phase transformation temperatures so that a reliable assessment of thermal properties and phase transformation characteristics of reduced activation steel can be determined by a combined analysis of the results of drop and differential scanning calorimetry.  相似文献

This study examined age differences in performance of a complex information search and retrieval task by using a simulated real-world task typical of those performed by customer service representatives. The study also investigated the influence of task experience and the relationships between cognitive abilities and task performance. One hundred seventeen participants from 3 age groups, younger (20–39 years), middle-aged (40–59 years), and older (60–75 years), performed the task for 3 days. Significant age differences were found for all measures of task performance with the exception of navigational efficiency and number of problems correctly navigated per attempt. There were also effects of task experience. The findings also indicated significant direct and indirect relations between component cognitive abilities and task performance. Ni-Cr-Si-B alloy coatings deposited on AISI 304L stainless steel substrate using plasma transferred arc welding process were studied with respect to the microchemical and microstructural modifications that take place during the process. The coating was characterized for (1) interface integrity and dilution (2) type, morphology and distribution of secondary phases in the coating (3) elemental redistribution between substrate and coating and (4) different phases that form during the deposition process. Formation of a transition zone of only 760 μm width was understood in terms of interdiffusion of Fe and Ni across the interface. Preferential redistribution of carbon to the surface of the coating was observed. It was explained on the basis of difference in thermodynamic activity. Apart from γ-Ni solid solution, the other primary phases identified in Ni-Cr-Si-B alloy were Cr2B, Cr7C3 and Cr3C2. The observed changes in microstructure, microchemistry and hardness have been understood based on the phase transitions of the Ni rich alloy during solidification and cooling on the substrate.  相似文献

A numerical procedure based on finite difference method was used to simulate the formation of ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ zones, in dissimilar weldments of 9Cr–1Mo and 2¼Cr–1Mo steels during high temperature exposure. Kinetic analysis of the calculated diffusion profiles showed that the activation energy for carbon diffusion in Cr–Mo steels is marginally higher than that in Fe–C system. Calculations were extended to incorporate the effect of Ni-based interlayers between 2¼Cr–1Mo and 9Cr–1Mo ferritic steels. The presence of a diffusion barrier was found to reduce the propensity for formation of hard and soft zones, which is related to the interaction parameter \( \varepsilon_{\rm C}^{\rm M}. \) Thickness of the interlayer required to suppress the formation of hard zone was optimized by the calculations. Transition joints of ferritic steels with Inconel 182 as the interlayer of thickness close to that predicted by the computations were fabricated and exposed to elevated temperature. Microstructural studies and hardness measurements further confirmed the effectiveness of Ni-based interlayers in preventing hard zone formation.  相似文献

Insulin resistance is a major pathophysiological feature in the development of type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Ferulic acid is known for attenuating the insulin resistance and reducing the blood glucose in T2DM rats. In this work, we designed and synthesized a library of new ferulic acid amides (FAA), which could be considered as ring opening derivatives of the antidiabetic PPARγ agonists Thiazolidinediones (TZDs). However, since these compounds displayed weak PPAR transactivation capacity, we employed a proteomics approach to unravel their molecular target(s) and identified the peroxiredoxin 1 (PRDX1) as a direct binding target of FAAs. Interestingly, PRDX1, a protein with antioxidant and chaperone activity, has been implied in the development of T2DM by inducing hepatic insulin resistance. SPR, mass spectrometry-based studies, docking experiments and in vitro inhibition assay confirmed that compounds VIe and VIf bound PRDX1 and induced a dose-dependent inhibition. Furthermore, VIe and VIf significantly improved hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia in streptozotocin-nicotinamide (STZ-NA)-induced diabetic rats as confirmed by histopathological examinations. These results provide guidance for developing the current FAAs as new potential antidiabetic agents.  相似文献
