Imagine viewing our world from space; a world astronauts have described as “bright and vivid” with “no borders or boundaries”. Then consider how much can be learned by studying Earth from this unique vantage point. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) began a three-year pilot program in 1995 designed by a team of scientists, educators, engineers, and high school and college students to share astronauts' unique view of Earth with middle school students. This pilot program was called KidSat. KidSat's primary objective was to merge real-time professional space flight with middle school education by providing students with equal access and direct contribution to the United States space program for the exploration of the Earth. KidSat's long-term intent was to produce higher student achievement and increased competence in science, math, technology, and geography, and to promote an interactive understanding of Earth as an integrated system. Similar to the regular duties of astronauts, scientists, and engineers, students around the nation planned observations and captured images to study Earth's dynamic, fragile environment, using a remotely operated high-resolution color digital camera onboard the Space Shuttle, custom flight software, the Internet, NASA's infrastructure, and a mission operations infrastructure that linked middle schools to the Shuttle through a student-built mission Control Gateway. Using accompanying curriculum, students determined which areas of Earth they wanted to explore and photograph along the Shuttle's flight path. Orbiting communications satellites and the Internet transmitted commands, telemetry and images to and from the classrooms. Via the Shuttle cargo bay video camera. NASA TV carried video of the mission and the Earth for simultaneous viewing in classrooms. The KidSat pilot program was conceived in November 1993 and ended in December 1997. Novel compliant actuation systems have been developed in recent years for a variety of possible advantages, such as establishing a safe human–robot interaction, increasing energy efficiency, reducing the effects of impacts and even for the development of neuro-inspired robotic platforms to be used in human motor control studies.In this rapidly growing and transversal research field, systems involving more than one active element (typically motors) for each actuated degree of freedom are being investigated to allow separate position and impedance regulations. Considering the wide range of applications and the large number of different arrangements deriving from the combination of two active elements and passive elastic components, several actuation architectures have been devised.This paper reviews state-of-the-art rotary variable impedance units incorporating two separate motors. Existing devices are grouped in three main categories. A critical and comparative analysis of the most relevant features is carried out, also based on most representative prototypes. Recently proposed methodologies and evaluation criteria for design optimization are illustrated and perspectives on potential applications of double actuation systems are presented.  相似文献

An alternative for reducing emissions from marine fuel is to blend bio-oil from lignocellulose non-edible feedstocks to diesel fossil fuels. Phase diagrams of the ternary systems were built to represent the transition from heterogeneous regions to homogeneous regions. Four homogeneous blends of bio-oil of eucalyptus-bioethanol-marine gasoil were experimentally characterized with respect to the most important fuel parameters for marine engines: water content, flash point, low heating value, viscosity, and acidity. Blends with closer properties to marine gasoil replacement, lower costs, and environmental impacts should be tested for large engines.  相似文献

The production of γ‐decalactone by the filamentous fungus Trichoderma harzianum involves four phases (oil–water–air–mycelium) and its dispersion is crucial during fermentation. Oil and biomass (when present) dispersion, as a function of the volumetric power drawn (P/V), was characterized, in two; three‐ and four‐phase systems agitated with Rushton turbines. Trichoderma harzianum mycelium was used as the solid phase in the four‐phase system. Two stages of the fermentation were simulated: the beginning (15% oil and 1.4 kgm?3 of mycelium) and the end (2% oil and 10.6 kg m?3 of mycelium). In the two‐phase system, the use of exhausted broth achieved higher oil dispersions at low P/V values as compared with distilled water. Aeration decreased the oil dispersion for the high‐oil system, but enhanced oil dispersion for the low‐oil system. Compared with the P/V used in the actual fermentation (0.2 kW m?3), a high segregation of the system was observed for the high‐oil/low‐biomass system, due to the difficulty of mixing the thick oil–air emulsion present at the top of the tank. The system simulating the end of the fermentation reached almost complete homogeneity of oil and biomass, a phenomenon due to the high biomass/oil ratio and the biomass acting as an oil carrier. © 2001 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Non-linear regression was used to fit a high order kinetic model to drying curves for mango and cassava. For comparison purposes, the same experimental data were also adjusted by non-lines regression to a model based on exponential series, and to another exponential model by simple linear regression. The high order model fit the experimental data with higher precision (r2 Al.98) than the other exponential series models. The proposed higher order model is mathematically simple as compared to the exponential series, and could be used for simulation of drying processes.  相似文献

Hydrogel silver nanocomposites have been used in applications with excellent antibacterial performance. Acrylic acid (AA)/itaconic acid (IA) hydrogels silver nanocomposites were prepared and applied as a coating on a textile substrate. Hydrogel matrices were synthesized first by the polymerization of an AA/IA aqueous (80/20 v/v) solution and mixed with 2‐2‐azobis(2‐methylpropionamide) diclorohydrate and N,N′‐methylene bisacrylamide until the hydrogel was formed. Silver nanoparticles were generated throughout the hydrogel networks with an in situ method via the incorporation of the silver ions and subsequent reduction with sodium borohydride. Cotton (C) and cotton/polyester (CP) textile fibers were then coated with these hydrogel silver nanocomposites. The influence of these nanocomposite hydrogels on the properties of the textile fiber were investigated by infrared spectroscopy (attenuated total reflectance), scanning electron microscopy, energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy, and antibacterial tests against Pseudomona aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. The better conditions, in which no serious aggregation of the silver nanoparticles occurred, were determined. Solutions of methyl orange azo dye were degraded by electrochemical oxidation using a 3 L flow plant with a boron-doped diamond (BDD)/stainless steel cell operating at constant current density, ambient temperature and liquid flow rate of 12 L min?1. A 23 factorial design considering the applied current density, azo dye concentration and electrolysis time as variable independents was used to analyze the process by response surface methodology. LC–MS analysis revealed the formation of seven oxidation products from the cleavage of the NN group of the dye, followed by deamination, formation of a nitro group and/or desulfonation of the resulting aromatics.  相似文献

The SAFT-γ Mie group-contribution equation of state is used to represent the fluid-phase behavior of aqueous solutions of a variety of linear, branched, and cyclic amines. New group interactions are developed in order to model the mixtures of interest, including the like and unlike interactions between alkyl primary, secondary, and tertiary amine groups (NH2, NH, N), cyclic secondary and tertiary amine groups (cNH, cN), and cyclic methine-amine groups (cCHNH, cCHN) with water (H2O). The group-interaction parameters are estimated from appropriate experimental thermodynamic data for pure amines and selected mixtures. By taking advantage of the group-contribution nature of the method, one can describe the fluid-phase behavior of mixtures of molecules comprising those groups over broad ranges of temperature, pressure, and composition. A number of aqueous solutions of amines are studied including linear, branched aliphatic, and cyclic amines. Liquid–liquid equilibria (LLE) bounded by lower critical solution temperatures (LCSTs) have been reported experimentally and are reproduced here with the SAFT-γ Mie approach. The main feature of the approach is the ability not only to represent accurately the experimental data employed in the parameter estimation, but also to predict the vapor–liquid, liquid–liquid, and vapor–liquid–liquid equilibria, and LCSTs with the same set of parameters. Pure compound and binary phase diagrams of diverse types of amines and their aqueous solutions are assessed in order to demonstrate the main features of the thermodynamic and fluid-phase behavior.  相似文献

Endometriosis is a common gynecological disorder that has been associated with endometrial, breast and epithelial ovarian cancers in epidemiological studies. Since complex diseases are a result of multiple environmental and genetic factors, we hypothesized that the biological mechanism underlying their comorbidity might be explained, at least in part, by shared genetics. To assess their potential genetic relationship, we performed a two-sample mendelian randomization (2SMR) analysis on results from public genome-wide association studies (GWAS). This analysis confirmed previously reported genetic pleiotropy between endometriosis and endometrial cancer. We present robust evidence supporting a causal genetic association between endometriosis and ovarian cancer, particularly with the clear cell and endometrioid subtypes. Our study also identified genetic variants that could explain those associations, opening the door to further functional experiments. Overall, this work demonstrates the value of genomic analyses to support epidemiological data, and to identify targets of relevance in multiple disorders.  相似文献
