Many biological phenomena such as locomotion, circadian cycles and breathing are rhythmic in nature and can be modelled as rhythmic dynamical systems. Dynamical systems modelling often involves neglecting certain characteristics of a physical system as a modelling convenience. For example, human locomotion is frequently treated as symmetric about the sagittal plane. In this work, we test this assumption by examining human walking dynamics around the steady state (limit-cycle). Here, we adapt statistical cross-validation in order to examine whether there are statistically significant asymmetries and, even if so, test the consequences of assuming bilateral symmetry anyway. Indeed, we identify significant asymmetries in the dynamics of human walking, but nevertheless show that ignoring these asymmetries results in a more consistent and predictive model. In general, neglecting evident characteristics of a system can be more than a modelling convenience—it can produce a better model.  相似文献

Reflectance spectra (1,250–2,390 nm) of two classes of western Canadian wheat (CWAD and CWRS) were studied to detect sprouting damage in individual kernels at the early stages of germination. Alpha-amylase activity levels were used as an indicator for the sprouting stage. Partial least squared discriminant analysis (PLSDA) and Logistic regression methods were used to build classification models. The optimal threshold α-amylase activity value for the separation of sprout damage classes was determined according to the area under the ROC curves. The results show that both PLSDA and logistic regression could distinguish kernels with an α-amylase activity larger than 1 SKB unit of activity from those with less enzyme activity. A total classification accuracy of over 91 and 86% was obtained for CWRS and CWAD, respectively.  相似文献

Speaker recognition systems perform almost ideal in neutral talking environments; however, these systems perform poorly in emotional talking environments. This research is devoted to enhancing the low performance of text-independent and emotion-dependent speaker identification in emotional talking environments based on employing Second-Order Circular Suprasegmental Hidden Markov Models (CSPHMM2s) as classifiers. This work has been tested on our speech database which is composed of 50 speakers talking in six different emotional states. These states are neutral, angry, sad, happy, disgust, and fear. Our results show that the average speaker identification performance in these talking environments based on CSPHMM2s is 81.50% with an improvement rate of 5.61%, 3.39%, and 3.06% compared, respectively, to First-Order Left-to-Right Suprasegmental Hidden Markov Models (LTRSPHMM1s), Second-Order Left-to-Right Suprasegmental Hidden Markov Models (LTRSPHMM2s), and First-Order Circular Suprasegmental Hidden Markov Models (CSPHMM1s). Our results based on subjective evaluation by human judges fall within 2.26% of those obtained based on CSPHMM2s.  相似文献

The nano-structured cobalt/manganese oxide catalyst was prepared by thermal decomposition of [Co(NH3)4CO3]MnO4 precursor, and was tested for the Fischer–Tropsch reaction (hydrocarbon forming) in a fixed-bed micro-reactor. Experimental conditions were varied as follow: reaction pressure 1–10 bar, H2/CO feed ratio of 1–2 and space velocity of 3600 h?1 at the temperature range of 463.15–523.15 K. On the basis of carbide and/or enolic mechanisms and Langmuir–Hinshelwood–Hougen–Watson (LHHW) type rate equations, 30 kinetic expressions for CO consumption were tested and interaction between adsorption HCO and dissociated adsorption hydrogen as the controlling step gave the most plausible kinetic model. The kinetic parameters were estimated with non-linear regression method and the activation energy was 80.63 kJ/mol for optimal kinetic model. Kinetic results indicated that in Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) rate expression, the rate constant (k) has been increased by decreasing the catalyst particle size. The catalyst characterization was carried out using different methods including powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area measurements.  相似文献

Hybrid materials are widely and promisingly used as scaffolds in cartilage tissue remodeling. In this study, hybrid scaffolds consist of polycaprolactone (PCL), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with/without gelatin (GEL) to mimic natural cartilage extracellular matrix (ECM) were investigated. Scaffolds were prepared by freeze drying and characterized by scanning electron microscopy and compressive mechanical testing. Biological assays of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) cultures, 3‐(4,5‐dimethylthiazol‐2‐yl)‐2,5‐diphenyltetrazolium bromide, and dimethyl methylene blue were performed, and real‐time polymerization chain reaction analysis of the cartilage‐specific ECM gene marker expression was done. The results show an open interconnected porous structure with a compression modulus of 1.27 ± 0.04 MPa. The surface of the scaffolds showed an excellent efficiency in the adhesion and proliferation of MSCs. A significant increase in the proteoglycan content from 3.70 ± 0.96 to 5.4 ± 1.13 μg/mL was observed after 14 days in the PCL–PVA–GEL scaffolds. The expression amount of the sex‐determining region Y–Box 9 (SOX9) and collagen II (COL2) mRNA levels of the MSCs showed significant increases in SOX9 and COL2, respectively in comparison with PCL–PVA scaffold. The study revealed that the aforementioned scaffold as a blend of natural and synthetic polymers may be a promising substrate in tissue engineering for cartilage repair with MSC transplantation. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Long term arterial blood pressure regulation involves complex interactions of the cardiovascular system, kidney and other organs. In hypertension related diseases, the control pathways are impaired and parameters for its quantification might be of prognostic importance. In this paper, we introduce methods based on the state variable approach for the enhanced analysis of complex interactions. To assess the dynamics of arterial blood pressure regulation, the linearized state model has been employed. This paper presents a seventh order nonlinear mathematical model of the long term arterial blood pressure regulation incorporating many of the nervous control mechanisms and hormonal activities. Subsequently, the structural properties, as well as the transient and steady state properties, are assessed using the eigen value concept. The comparison of model response with those of the nonlinear model shows close matching. In conclusion, the analysis of the linearised model provides insights into complex, nonlinear physiological interactions and furthermore reveals physiological cardiovascular control about the equilibrium point.  相似文献

Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is the most common cause of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and liver cirrhosis worldwide. In spite of the numerous advances in the treatment of CHB, drugs and vaccines have failed because of many factors like complexity, resistance, toxicity, and heavy cost. New RNA interference (RNAi)‐based technologies have developed innovative strategies to target Achilles'' heel of the several hazardous diseases involving cancer, some genetic disease, autoimmune illnesses, and viral disorders particularly hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections. Naked siRNA delivery has serious challenges including failure to cross the cell membrane, susceptibility to the enzymatic digestion, and excretion by renal filtration, which ideally can be addressed by nanoparticle‐mediated delivery systems. cccDNA formation is a significant problem in obtaining HBV infections complete cure because of strength, durability, and lack of proper immune response. Nano‐siRNA drugs have a great potential to address this problem by silencing specific genes which are involved in cccDNA formation. In this article, the authors describe siRNA nanocarrier‐mediated delivery systems as a promising new strategy for HBV infections therapy. An important consideration in the use of magnets in adiabatic demagnetization refrigeration (ADR) applications is shielding of the other instruments in the vicinity of the superconducting magnets. Shielding without proper optimization can add unnecessary weight to the magnet system that can amount to a few times the weight of the superconducting magnet itself. This article reports on examination of various approaches to shielding of ADR magnets, and measurements conducted on both passive and active shielding of a sample Nb3Sn solenoidal magnet. Shielded ADR solenoidal magnets are also compared with self-shielding toroidal magnets in terms of overall weight, volume, and cooling capacity.  相似文献
