The benefits of an energy source whose reactants are plentiful and whose products are benign is hard to measure, but at no time in history has this energy source been more needed. Nuclear fusion continues to promise to be this energy source. However, the path to market for fusion systems is still regularly a matter for long-term (20?+?year) plans. This white paper is intended to stimulate discussion of faster commercialization paths, distilling guidance from investors, utilities, and the wider energy research community (including from ARPA-E). There is great interest in a small modular fusion system that can be developed quickly and inexpensively. A simple model shows how compact modular fusion can produce a low cost development path by optimizing traditional systems that burn deuterium and tritium, operating not only at high magnetic field strength, but also by omitting some components that allow for the core to become more compact and easier to maintain. The dominant hurdles to the development of low cost, practical fusion systems are discussed, primarily in terms of the constraints placed on the cost of development stages in the private sector. The main finding presented here is that the bridge from DOE Office of Science to the energy market can come at the Proof of Principle development stage, providing the concept is sufficiently compact and inexpensive that its development allows for a normal technology commercialization path. 相似文献

The study assessed the causal effects of NERICA adoption on rice yields and income, using country-wide data of 600 rice farmers
in The Gambia. To control for differences in socio-demographic and environmental characteristics of adopters and non-adopters
and enable a causal interpretation of NERICA adoption on the variables of interest, the study used the counterfactual outcome
framework to control for such differences. The results, based on observed sample estimates, showed significant differences
in rice yields and income between the NERICA adopters and non-adopters. Further, the results of the framework, based on the
Local Average Treatment Effect (LATE) estimates, which allowed a causal interpretation, showed that NERICA adoption significantly
increased average rice yields and annual income of small-scale rice farmers by 157 kg per hectare and $148, respectively. 相似文献

In order to improve risk analyses and influence the design of the future H2 systems, an experimental study on “real” leaks qualification and quantification was performed. In H2 energy applications, fittings appeared as a significant leakage potential and subsequently explosion and flame hazards. Thus, as a part of the “Horizon Hydrogène Energie” French program, four kinds of commercial fittings usually employed on H2 systems were tested thanks to a new high pressure test bench – designed, setup and operated by INERIS – allowing experiments to be led for H2 pressures until 700 bar. A recent concern in marine robotics is to consider the deployment of fleets of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and autonomous
surface vehicles (ASVs). Multiple vehicles with heterogeneous capabilities have several advantages over a single vehicle system,
and in particular the potential to accomplish tasks faster and better than a single vehicle. This paper addresses in this
context the problem of underwater targets localization. A systematic and exhaustive coverage strategy is not efficient in
terms of exploration time: it can be improved by making the AUVs share their information to cooperate, and optimize their
motions according to the state of their knowledge on the target localization. We present techniques to build environment representations
on the basis of which adaptive exploration strategies can be defined, and define an architecture that allows information sharing
and cooperation between the AUVs. Simulations are carried out to evaluate the proposed architecture and the adaptive exploration

Hydrogen energy applications often require that systems are used indoors (e.g., industrial trucks for materials handling in a warehouse facility, fuel cells located in a room, or hydrogen stored and distributed from a gas cabinet). It may also be necessary or desirable to locate some hydrogen system components/equipment inside indoor or outdoor enclosures for security or safety reasons, to isolate them from the end-user and the public, or from weather conditions.Using of hydrogen in confined environments requires detailed assessments of hazards and associated risks, including potential risk prevention and mitigation features. The release of hydrogen can potentially lead to the accumulation of hydrogen and the formation of a flammable hydrogen-air mixture, or can result in jet-fires. Within Hyindoor European Project, carried out for the EU Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking safety design guidelines and engineering tools have been developed to prevent and mitigate hazardous consequences of hydrogen release in confined environments. Three main areas are considered: Hydrogen release conditions and accumulation, vented deflagrations, jet fires and including under-ventilated flame regimes (e.g., extinguishment or oscillating flames and steady burns). Blue-green algae are responsible for the production of different types of toxins which can be neurotoxic, hepatotoxic, cytotoxic and dermatotoxic and that can affect both aquatic and terrestrial life. Since its discovery the neurotoxin β-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) has been a cause for concern, being associated with the neurodegenerative disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/Parkinsonism–dementia complex (ALS/PDC). The initial focus was on Guam where it was observed that a high number of people were affected by the ALS/PDC complex. Subsequently, researchers were surprised to find levels of BMAA in post mortem brains from Canadian patients who also suffered from ALS/PDC. Recent research demonstrates that BMAA has been found at different levels in the aquatic food web in the brackish waters of the Baltic Sea. There is emerging evidence to suggest that sand-borne algae from Qatar can also contain BMAA. Furthermore, there is now concern because BMAA has been found not only in warmer regions of the world but also in temperate regions like Europe. The aim of this review is to focus on the methods of extraction and analysis of the neurotoxic non-protein amino acid BMAA. We also consider the neurotoxicity, aetiology, and diverse sources and routes of exposure to BMAA. In recent years, different methods have been developed for the analysis of BMAA. Some of these use HPLC-FD, UPLC-UV, UPLC-MS and LC-MS/MS using samples that have been derivatised or underivatised. Abstract When an extraordinary wave under inhibited reflection conditions is incident on an interface between a uniaxial crystal and an isotropic medium, the reflected extraordinary wave is evanescent and the polarization of the refracted wave changes from linear to elliptical. In the present paper it is shown that the refracted ray undergoes a shift which is not only longitudinal (as the Goos—Hänchen effect in total reflection in isotropic interfaces) but also transversal. The structure of the evanescent reflected wave is studied and the polarization of the transmitted wave is analysed. 相似文献

Abstract Quantum cryptography has been shown to be an effective technology for the secure distribution of keys on point-to-point optical links. We show how the existing techniques can be extended to allow multi-user secure key distribution on optical networks. We demonstrate that using network configurations typical of those found in passive optical network architectures any of the current quantum key distribution protocols can be adapted to implement secure key distribution from any user to any other user. An important feature of these adapted protocols is that the broadcaster, or service provider on the network, does not have to be trusted by the two users who wish to establish a key. 相似文献
