Zu einem Phänomen der Lochkorrosionsbegrenzung bei hochlegierten Sonderedelstählen und NiCrMo-Legierungen in Chloridlösungen

On a phenomenon of the limitation of pitting corrosion at high alloyed special stainless steels and NiCrMo-alloys in chloride solutions Testing the pitting corrosion resistance of high alloyed special stainless steels and NiCrMo-alloys in chloride solutions there was observed a limitation of the pitting corrosion range toward more positive potentials. Above this limitation, the so-called pitting corrosion limitation potential, the pit initiation by all means is prevented, but the growth of pits which had been initiated before in the pitting corrosion range not necessarily comes to a stop. Therefore current density-potential curves which are obtained by downward polarization after an initial potential jump into the transpassive region and chronopotentiostatic tests are more suitable to investigate this phenomenon than cyclic polarization measurements and potentiostatic alteration tests. There is indicated a dependence of this phenomenon on temperature. The phenomenon of a limitation of the pitting corrosion range toward more positive potentials has been found until now at alloy 926, alloy 31, alloy 28, alloy 59 and alloy C-276.     

SHELF-LIFE MODELING OF SWEETENED CONDENSED MILK BASED ON KINETICS OF MAILLARD BROWNING

Nonenzymatic browning and related changes were monitored in commercial sweetened condensed milk stored at 7, 15, 30, 45 and 55C. Darkening of the color measured in terms of absorbance (100 - reflectance percent) followed zero-order kinetics, the apparent activation energy (E_a) being 45.2 kJ/mol at 7–30C and 139.9 kJ/mol at > 30–55C. Hydroxy-methyl-furfural (HMF) showed a first-order increase, the associated E_a values being smaller than those for absorbance. The pH exhibited a linear decline after a small initial rise at 30C and below. As browning progressed, the coffee whitening ability of the product decreased along zero-order kinetics. The Q₁₀ values for these variables ranged from 1.21 to 1.84 for temperatures up to 30C and were nearly 2–3 times higher above 30C. The sensory color score was negatively correlated with absorbance. The linear regression of color score on absorbance and the temperature dependence of the latter as expressed by Arrhenius relationship were combined into a mathematical model which could be useful in predicting the product's shelf-life.     

Hinokitiol induces differentiation of teratocarcinoma F9 cells

Hinokitiol, a constituent of the wood of Chamaecyparis taiwanensis, was found to induce differentiation of teratocarcinoma F9 cells. When examined by the agar-overlay method, in which expression of plasminogen activator as a differentiation marker protein was detected, this compound exhibited a dose- and time-dependent induction. Induction of differentiation by hinokitiol occurred irreversibly and required its addition for more than 12h. Among its structure-related compounds tested, tropolone and two colchicine-related compounds exerted potent activities comparable to that of hinokitiol. These findings indicate that free tropolone structure in the molecules plays an essential role in inducing differentiation of F9 cells. Hinokitiol showed a strong inhibitory effect of DNA synthesis in very early stages of culture, suggesting that this effect may be responsible for triggering differentiation of F9 cells.     

Detecting delaminations in a composite beam using anti-optimization

The present study proposes a detection technique for delaminations in a laminated beam. The proposed technique optimizes the spatial distribution of harmonic excitation so as to magnify the difference in response between the delaminated and intact beam. The technique is evaluated by numerical simulation of two-layered aluminum beams. Effects of measurement and geometric noise are included in the analysis. A finite element model for a delaminated composite, based on a layer-wise laminated plate theory is used in conjunction with a step function to simulate delaminations     

A simplified method for the preparation of succinimidyl carbonate polyethylene glycol for coupling to proteins

An improved method for the activation of polyethylene glycol with commercially available succinimidyl carbonate is described. The activated polyethylene glycol was coupled to proteins in high yield.     

Geo-electrical survey of masonry

The geo-electrical measuring technique is frequently used for restoration purposes. However, this technique as developed in geology cannot be used without adaptations. The structure that is analysed has geometrical boundaries which influence the measurements and can lead to errors in the interpretation if they are not taken into account. This is illustrated by practical and theoretical tests. In an extensive test programme other aspects of the technique are also considered, such as the influence of electrode configuration and of moisture content.
