BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Autonomic dysfunction is frequently present in patients with cerebrovascular accidents (CVA). However, the pathophysiological mechanisms of these disorders are not clear. The purpose of the study was to assess the effects of CVA on the autonomic nervous system. METHODS: In eight male patients with a history of CVA with damage of the cortical or subcortical structures, we measured the cold pressor response during recording of muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) from the peroneal nerve on the hemiplegic side. We also studied 10 age-matched male control subjects. Tests were performed before, during, and after immersion of the nonhemiplegic hand in ice water for a period of 3 minutes in each phase. We also recorded changes in heart rate (HR), arterial blood pressure, skin temperature of the middle finger, and perception of pain using the Borg's score. RESULTS: During the control period, the mean burst count of MSNA in CVA (57.2 +/- 3.9 beats/100 HR) was higher than in control subjects (36.3 +/- 3.2 beats/100 HR) (P<.05). Total MSNA (the mean burst amplitude per minute times burst rate) increased significantly in CVA and control during the immersion period by 79.9 +/- 18.4% and 133.1 +/- 25.6%, respectively. The percent change in total MSNA in CVA was attenuated during immersion compared with control subjects. The HR and skin temperature responses as well as the Borg's score were similar in both groups during control, hand immersion, and recovery periods. CONCLUSIONS: The present results suggest that increased MSNA in CVA may be due to damage of cortical or subcortical structures or stroke-related changes in other areas or nonspecific changes that cause continuous increase in basal MSNA. 相似文献

This paper presents a novel posture control approach using feedback compensation with an unstable pole. For a narrow and small personal mobility robot (PMR), this is needed in order to control its posture for achieving quick turning and high acceleration. However, in the conventional control approach that uses the posture angle as a controlled variable, the zero moment point (ZMP) does not settle to the desired point in the following cases: an unknown disturbance force given to the PMR, a fluctuation in the center of gravity of the PMR, and a change in the conditions between the tires and the road surface. In this paper, a novel control method using feedback compensation with an unstable pole is proposed to achieve the desired ZMP in the steady state. The proposed controller changes the control input for the actuator of posture control to zero in order to achieve the desired posture angle. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is verified through experiments using a prototype of the PMR. 相似文献

We designed a new surface forces apparatus for measuring the interactions between two nontransparent substrates and/or in nontransparent liquids. The small displacement of a surface, the bottom one in this study, was measured by the two-beam (twin path) interferometry technique using the phase difference between the laser light reflected by the fixed mirror and that by the mirror on the back of the bottom surface unit. It is possible to determine the distance with a resolution of 1 nm in the working range of 5 microm. ABSTRACTThis paper presents a robust bin-picking system utilizing tactile sensors and a vision sensor. The object position and orientation are estimated using a fast template-matching method through the vision sensor. When a robot picks up an object, the tactile sensors detect the success or failure of the grasping, and a force sensor detects the contact with the environment. A weight sensor is also used to judge whether the lifting of the object has been successful. The robust and efficient bin-picking system presented herein is implemented through the integration of different sensors. In particular, the tactile sensors realize rope-shaped object picking that has yet to be made possible with conventional picking systems. The method of phase shift with the projection of multiple cyclic patterns enables 3D measurement that is highly accurate, dense, and fast. However, this measurement is only possible for the wrapped phase value, which has ambiguities in its multiples of cycles. Two particular problems are that conventional methods require additional patterns to be projected to determine the absolute phase and that unwrapping the phase tends to fail where depth varies abruptly. Two methods are proposed: the first is to determine the absolute phase without additional patterns being projected by observing the projected pattern with multiple cameras and applying the geometric constraints between them, and the second is to prevent failure in unwrapping the phase by referring to continuities in the relative phases of multiple projected patterns. The proposed methods were achieved with a 3D scanner that can measure approximately a 180 degrees field of view within 0.5 s, with an accuracy of 0.14 mm in depth. 相似文献

Reaction of d-glucose in water to yield 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), 1,2,4-benzenetriol (BTO) and furfural was studied at high temperatures (up to 400 °C) and high pressures (up to 80 MPa) using a continuous flow reactor. Maximum temperature and pressure conditions gave maximum furfural yield. Increasing pressure from 40 to 70 and 80 MPa enhanced dehydration reactions to 5-HMF, but also enhanced hydrolysis of 5-HMF leading to the production of BTO and thus lead to lower yields of 5-HMF (below 10%). Remarkably, the dehydration reaction to 5-HMF and the hydrolysis of 5-HMF were both enhanced by the increase in water density at 400 °C. 相似文献

The cytoplasmic domain of an envelope transmembrane glycoprotein (gp30) of bovine leukemia virus (BLV) has two overlapping copies of the (YXXL)2 motif. The N-terminal motif has been implicated in in vitro signal transduction pathways from the external to the intracellular compartment and is also involved in infection and maintenance of high viral loads in sheep that have been experimentally infected with BLV. To determine the role of YXXL sequences in the replication of BLV in vitro, we changed the tyrosine or leucine residues of the N-terminal motif in an infectious molecular clone of BLV, pBLV-IF, to alanine to produce mutated proviruses designated Y487A, L490A, Y498A, L501A, and Y487/498A. Transient transfection of African green monkey kidney COS-1 cells with proviral DNAs that encoded wild-type and mutant sequences revealed that all of the mutated proviral DNAs synthesized mature envelope proteins and released virus particles into the growth medium. However, serial passages of fetal lamb kidney (FLK) cells, which are sensitive to infection with BLV, after transient transfection revealed that mutation of a second tyrosine residue in the N-terminal motif completely prevented the propagation of the virus. Similarly, Y498A and Y487/498A mutant BLV that was produced by the stably transfected COS-1 cells exhibited significantly reduced levels of cell-free virion-mediated transmission. Analysis of the protein compositions of mutant viruses demonstrated that lower levels of envelope protein were incorporated by two of the mutant virions than by wild-type and other mutant virions. Furthermore, a mutation of a second tyrosine residue decreased the specific binding of BLV particles to FLK cells and the capacity for viral penetration. Our data indicate that the YXXL sequences play critical roles in both viral entry and the incorporation of viral envelope protein into the virion during the life cycle of BLV. 相似文献

A family of uncoupling proteins (UCPs), free fatty acid anion transporters, plays a crucial role in energy homeostatic thermoregulation. Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), a member of the cytokine family, is well known as an endogenous pyrogen. To evaluate the interaction of TNF-alpha with UCPs in thermogenesis, effects of TNF-alpha on rat UCP gene expression were examined in intrascapular brown adipose tissue (BAT), epididymal white adipose tissue (WAT) and soleus muscle (Muscle). Administration of TNF-alpha elevated rectal temperature by 0.7 degree C as well as serum leptin which peaked at 6 h, compared with saline controls. BAT UCP1 mRNA expression was increased by 1.2-fold at 6 h after the TNF-alpha treatment and decreased by 0.8-fold at 16 h after the treatment. In contrast to UCP1 expression in BAT, UCP2 mRNA expressions in BAT, WAT, and Muscle was increased to reach maximum levels of 1.3-, 1.6- and 1.8-fold, respectively, at 16 h after the treatment. UCP3 mRNA in Muscle, but not in BAT or WAT, was exclusively up-regulated by 1.7-fold at 16 h after the treatment. These results indicate that TNF-alpha up-regulates UCP gene expression differentially and tissue dependently, and add novel insights into thermogenesis under conditions of malignancy and inflammation. 相似文献
