We performed evaporative cooling for dilute gases of ytterbium (Yb) isotopes in a crossed optical dipole trap and successfully
cooled two fermionic and two bosonic species down to quantum degenerate regime, following the previous realization of Bose-Einstein
condensation (BEC) in 174Yb. The elastic collision rate of fermionic 173Yb atoms with 6 spin components was found to be large enough to carry out efficient evaporation, which enables us to cool
the atoms down to 0.6 T

is the Fermi temperature. In this regime, a plunge of evaporation efficiency was observed as an effect of the Fermi degeneracy.
The other fermionic isotope 171Yb was cooled down to the temperature below T
F
by sympathetic cooling with bosonic 174Yb atoms. The sympathetic cooling technique has also been applied to 174Yb-176Yb Bose-Bose mixture. We have observed almost pure BEC of 174Yb and the bimodal distribution of 176Yb, showing the formation of BEC-BEC mixture. Six to eight months after the Tokyo subway attack in March 1995, the neurophysiological effects of acute sarin poisoning were investigated in 18 passengers exposed to sarin (sarin cases) in the subways to ascertain the focal or functional brain deficits induced by sarin. The event-related and visual evoked potentials (P300 and VEP), brainstem auditory evoked potential, and electrocardiographic R-R interval variability (CVRR), together with the score on the posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) checklist, were measured in the sarin cases and the same number of control subjects matched for sex and age. None of the sarin cases had any obvious clinical abnormalities at the time of testing. The P300 and VEP (P100) latencies in the sarin cases were significantly prolonged compared with the matched controls. In the sarin cases, the CVRR was significantly related to serum cholinesterase (ChE) levels determined immediately after exposure; the PTSD score was not significantly associated with any neurophysiological data despite the high PTSD score in the sarin cases. These findings suggest that asymptomatic sequelae to sarin exposure, rather than PTSD, persist in the higher and visual nervous systems beyond the turnover period of ChE; sarin may have neurotoxic actions in addition to the inhibitory action on brain ChE. 相似文献

We have proposed a hybrid alignment nematic liquid crystal cell using a polymer‐stabilized technology. The cell shows a reverse mode scattering property and is transparent at any viewing angle in the off‐state. The cell turns to opaque in the on‐state and has an asymmetrical scattering property at incident angles. Applying the cell to a smart glass, the cell can selectively scatter a midday sunlight with a function of window blinds. In a polymerization process, an ultraviolet (UV) penetration depth is carefully considered, which results in a change of polymer morphology. The UV irradiation from a homogeneous alignment substrate side causes a polymer‐rich layer near the substrate and the stronger scattering in the on‐state. 相似文献

Here we present a case of variant GSS disease with mutations in codons 1055 and 129 in a prion protein. The patient was a 54-year-old male, who developed weakness in the lower limbs and spastic, wide-based gait at the age of 46 years. Subsequently he developed dementia and spastic quadriplegia at the age of 49. He had marked pseudobulbar palsy at the age of 50 and became bed-ridden in decorticated posture at teh age of 53. CT and MRI examinations revealed marked atrophy of the frontal and temporal lobes, but the occipital lobes and the cerebellum were spared. His sister had been reported by Amano, et al. in 1992 as a case of variant GSS syndrome, who had very similar clinical features, and had numerous prion protein positive plaques in her cerebral cortex at the time of autopsy. His sister was confirmed to have the same mutations in a prion protein as the present case in later genetic studies. 相似文献

To better understand the material properties of cast aluminum alloys, the mechanical properties of microscopic structures (the eutectic structure and the α-Al phase) have been systematically examined using a special nano-indentation hardness test machine. In this approach, a triangular indentation is applied directly to the eutectic structure or α-Al phase, and the mechanical properties evaluated through hardness and load-strain relationships. The hardness of the eutectic phase varied, depending on the structural characteristics of the different intermetallic compounds. High values of hardness were obtained structures of the DO3 type, e.g., Al5FeSi, but low hardness for CuAl2 and Mg2Si. The hardness of CuAl2 and Mg2Si had almost the same values as that of the α-Al matrix. In addition, from the nano-indentation hardness test, the effects of α-Al grain characteristics on the mechanical properties were clarified. The hardness of the α-Al grain was linearly related to the grain size and the distance from the grain boundary, where the higher the hardness, the smaller the grain size and the closer to the grain boundary. The hardness level was attributed to the different severity of slip resistance of the atoms during the indentation loading. 相似文献

Simultaneous measurement of velocity and length of moving surfaces by a speckle velocimeter with two self-mixing laser diodes 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A novel laser speckle velocimeter with two self-mixing laser diodes (SM-LD's) for velocity and length measurements of moving surfaces is reported. The mean frequency of the speckle signal obtained in the measurement system depends on the surface path illuminated by the SM-LD. This behavior of the speckle signal in the SM-LD's is exploited to detect the front and the end edges of a target surface by sampling continuously the number of intensity changes in a speckle signal waveform. Once the edges are determined, the velocity and the length of the surface are calculated easily. The error for length and velocity measurements of a target with a homogeneous rough plane surface of 60-mm length, moving at a velocity of 200 mm/s, can be as low as 2.1% and 1.75%, respectively. 相似文献

Constant-volume gas thermometer (CVGT) measurements are conducted using 3He of three different densities as the working gas to obtain the thermodynamic temperature T CVGT and the second virial coefficient of 3He, B, at temperatures down to 3 K, using the triple point of Ne as a reference temperature. Densities of 127 mol ?? m?3 and 278 mol ?? m?3 are used in addition to the density of 168 mol ?? m?3 used in the measurement reported previously, where T CVGT was obtained using the virial coefficient adopted by the International Temperature Scale of 1990 (ITS-90), B ITS-90. T CVGT is obtained by two methods, by the single- and multi-isotherm fitting of B to the three densities and by the method used in the previous work using one of the three densities and B ITS-90. B obtained from the isotherm fitting agrees with B ITS-90 within the uncertainty of the data used to derive B ITS-90. Moreover, B obtained from a multi-isotherm fit agrees with that of recent theoretical ab initio calculations within 0.05?cm3 ?? mol?1 at 5 K and above, and within 0.3?cm3 ?? mol?1 down to 3 K. The values of T CVGT obtained from the multi-isotherm fits assuming different forms for the temperature dependence of B agree with each other within 0.1?mK. T CVGT obtained from the multi-isotherm fitting agrees with that obtained from the method in the previous report within 0.22?mK. The tendency of the difference between T CVGT and the ITS-90 temperature reported in the previous work is confirmed in the present work. 相似文献

This second study carried out on an extract of two grass pollens (Poa pratensis and Phleum pratense) demonstrated the presence of N-acetilglucosamine and sialic acid in the extract (RFEX). Moreover the extract has confirmed its characteristics biologic activity i.e. the inhibition of the phenomenon of immune hemolysis with a different technique too, even having the antibodies of the treated animals the complement fixing activity. Boron doped diamond (BDD) electrodes were activated in steam at various temperatures, resulting in high quality BDD electrodes with a porous microstructure. Distinct columnar structures were observed by scanning electron microscopy. The electrochemically active surface area of the steam-activated BDD was up to 20 times larger than the pristine BDD electrode owing to the porous texture. In addition, a widening of the potential window was observed after steam activation, suggesting that the quality of BDD was enhanced due to oxidative removal of graphitic impurities during the activation process. 相似文献

Soil burial degradation behavior of miscible blend systems of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/partially deacetylated chitin (1), PVA/chitin-graft-poly(2-methyl-2-oxazoline) (2), and PVA/chitin-graft-poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) (3) was investigated in comparison with the case of a pure PVA film. The degradation of the blend films was followed by the weight changes, scanning electron microscopic observation, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H-NMR, and size exclusion chromatography analyses. The rate of weight decrease in these PVA/chitin derivative hybrids was higher than that of control PVA in the soil burial test. Fourier transform infrared spectra of the recovered samples of the blends showed an apparent increase of the absorption intensity due to β-diketone structure in PVA, which reflects the progress of biodegradation of PVA by PVA-oxidizing enzymes. Scanning electron microscopic observation revealed that these blend films were degraded by bacteria and actinomycetes. The triad tacticity and number-average molecular weight of PVA in the hybrids after soil burial determined by 1H-NMR and size exclusion chromatography, respectively, were almost the same as those before soil burial. These results suggested that enzymatic degradation of the hybrid films occurred mainly on the surface and that degradation of the PVA-based samples in the soil was accelerated by blending the chitin derivatives. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
