An Approximation for the Production Efficiency of Automatic Transfer Lines with In-Process Storages

This paper considers the production efficiency of automatic transfer lines where in-process storages are provided for stochastic station breakdowns. A simple approximation method is developed in order to readily obtain the production efficiency and show the benefit of providing storages even for long lines. Additionally, the optimal partitioning of the line and the method of allocating capacities for storages are numerically investigated.     

Beta-decay half-lives calculated on the gross theory

Beta-decay half-lives have been calculated by the use of the gross theory which was formulated by Takahashi, Yamada, and Koyama. Both allowed and first-forbidden transitions have been taken into account, and consideration also has been given to the possibility that all the transitions to the levels near the ground states may be highly forbidden. The Q-values used in the calculation have been taken from the mass formula of Myers and Swiatecki. The calculated half-lives are shown in the PLOTS together with the experimental data and the Q-values. The PLOTS cover all the isotopes between the proton-drip and neutron-drip lines with Z = 3 to Z = 100.     

Electron spin resonance study of Langmuir-Blodgett films of N-docosylpyridinium- di(tetracyanoquinodimethane)

An electron spin resonance (ESR) investigation is performed on Langmuir-Blodgett films consisting of a surface-active 1:2 complex of N-docosylpyridinium and tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ), whose temperature-dependent spin susceptibility has been so far found to be consistent with the random-exchange Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain (REHAC) model of Soos and Bondeson. An out-of-plane anisotropy in the ESR spectra shows that the long axes of TCNQ molecules are preferentially oriented along the plane normal to the sample, where the negligible in- plane anisotropy indicates the random distribution of the short and the pπ orbital axes in the film plane. A heat treatment applied to the samples results in an increase in the concentration of disorder, showing the possibility of controlling it in the present REHAC system.
