We study the power of four query models in the context of property testing in general graphs, where our main case study is the problem of testing k-colorability. Two query types, which have been studied extensively in the past, are pair queries and neighbor queries. The former corresponds to asking whether there is an edge between any particular pair of vertices, and the latter to asking for the i th neighbor of a particular vertex. We show that while for pair queries testing k-colorability requires a number of queries that is a monotone decreasing function in the average degree d, the query complexity in the case of neighbor queries remains roughly the same for every density and for large values of k. We also consider a combined model that allows both types of queries, and we propose a new, stronger, query model, related to the field of Group Testing. We give upper and lower bounds on the query complexity for one-sided error in all the models, where the bounds are nearly tight for three of the models. In some of the cases, our lower bounds extend to two-sided error algorithms. The problem of testing k-colorability was previously studied in the contexts of dense graphs and of sparse graphs, and in our proofs we unify approaches from those cases, and also provide some new tools and techniques that may be of independent interest.  相似文献

It has been observed that queries over XML data sources are often unsatisfiable. Unsatisfiability may stem from several different sources, e.g., the user may be insufficiently familiar with the labels appearing the documents, or may not be intimately aware of the hierarchical structure of the documents. To deal with query and document mismatches, previous research has considered returning answers that maximally satisfy (in some sense) the query, instead of only returning strictly satisfying answers. However, this breaks the golden database rule that only strictly satisfying answers are returned when querying. Indeed, the relationship between the query and answers is no longer clear, when unsatisfying answers are returned. To reinstate the golden database rule, this article proposes a framework for automatically correcting queries over XML. This framework generates similar satisfiable queries, when the user query is unsatisfiable. The user can then choose a satisfiable query of interest, and receive exactly satisfying answers to this query.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:  There is a lack of efficient and safe preservatives in the food industry. Massive use of some common food preservation methods has led, over the years, to development of a resistance to different treatments by various food pathogens. Enteric bacteria are especially tolerant to adverse environmental conditions—such as low pH and high salt concentrations— which limits efficiency of some preservation methods. Consumers demand for natural, preservative-free, and minimally processed foods and worldwide concern regarding disease outbreaks caused by food-related pathogens have created a need for development of new classes of antimicrobial (AM) agents. The twentieth century revealed a massive array of new peptide-based antimicrobials. Small ribosomally made compounds are found in practically all living species where they act as important component of host defense. Certain indubitable advantages of peptides—pertaining to simplicity, activity spectra, and bacterial resistance—over known preservative agents advocate their potential for food preservation. Nisin, an AM compound originating from bacteria, is so far the only FDA-approved peptide. However, a growing number of reports describe the potential of animal-derived antimicrobial peptides as food preservatives. These studies have yielded various native compounds and/or derivatives that possess markedly improved antimicrobial properties under a broad range of incubation conditions. The present work reviews the most investigated peptides and accounts for their potential use as alternatives to the preservatives used today. The focus is on research aspects aiming at understanding the mechanism of action of these peptides at extreme environments of various food systems. Collectively, the data accumulated are convincingly indicative of potential applications of these peptides in food safety, namely, with respect to fighting multidrug-resistant pathogens.  相似文献

Electrocoagulation (EC) and chemical coagulation (CC) are employed in water treatment for particle removal. Although both are used for similar purposes, they differ in their dosing method - in EC the coagulant is added by electrolytic oxidation of an appropriate anode material, while in CC dissolution of a chemical coagulant is used. These different methods in fact induce different chemical environments, which should impact coagulation/flocculation mechanisms and subsequent floc formation. Hence, the process implications when choosing which to apply should be significant. This study elucidates differences in coagulation/flocculation mechanisms in EC versus CC and their subsequent effect on floc growth kinetics and structural evolution. A buffered kaolin suspension served as a representative solution that underwent EC and CC by applying aluminum via additive dosing regime in batch mode. In EC an aluminum anode generated the active species while in CC, commercial alum was used. Aluminum equivalent doses were applied, at initial pH values of 5, 6.5 and 8, while samples were taken over pre-determined time intervals, and analyzed for pH, particle size distribution, ζ potential, and structural properties. EC generated fragile flocs, compared to CC, over a wider pH range, at a substantially higher growth rate, that were prone to restructuring and compaction. The results suggest that the flocculation mechanism governing EC in sweep floc conditions is of Diffusion Limited Cluster Aggregation (DCLA) nature, versus a Reaction Limited Cluster Aggregation (RLCA) type in CC. The implications of these differences are discussed.  相似文献

Work flow policies are shown to induce a change in average between-workers variability (worker heterogeneity) and within-worker variability in performance times. In a laboratory experiment, the authors measured the levels of worker heterogeneity and within-worker variability under an individual performance condition, a work sharing condition, and a fixed assignment condition. The work sharing policy increased the levels of worker heterogeneity and worker variability, whereas the fixed assignment policy decreased them. These effects, along with work flow policy main effects on mean performance times and variability are examined. This article represents an initial step in understanding effects that may be important in the selection of an operating policy, the ignorance of which may lead to costly misestimates of performance. Several marinade solutions were tested for their effects on pork tenderness. Paired loins were removed from eight Large White crossbred pigs. Each pair was cut to give eight pieces and injected to a target of 110% of original weight with one of the following eight solutions (g/100 g water): uninjected (A, control), 5% salt (B), 5% sodium tripolyphosphate (C), 3% sodium bicarbonate (D), 5% salt and 5% sodium tripolyphosphate 5% (E), 5% salt and 3% sodium bicarbonate (F), 5% sodium tripolyphosphate and 3% sodium bicarbonate (G), 5% salt, 5% sodium tripolyphosphate and 3% sodium bicarbonate (H). Samples were left overnight to equilibrate, cooked and assessed for tenderness using a Volodkevich shear force method. Mean pHs for meat injected with phosphate and/or bicarbonate (C-H) ranged from 5.75 to 5.97, compared to 5.45 for the control. All injected loins, had a significantly higher yield than the control (p<0.05), except salt alone which, though higher, did not differ significantly (p>0.05) from the control. Treatment H increased the yield from 70% (control) to 85%. All marinades significantly reduced the shear force (p<0.05), some treatments (D and F) by up to a half compared to the control (5150 g). Individual animal results suggest that marination could be used to good effect even in the toughest samples, whilst improving tender samples still further. Samples treated with bicarbonate had an usual porous structure, probably due to carbon dioxide produced during cooking which may have contributed to the reduced toughness.  相似文献

We investigate how transactional memory can be adapted for embedded systems. We consider energy consumption and complexity to be driving concerns in the design of these systems and therefore adapt simple hardware transactional memory (HTM) schemes in our architectural design. We propose several different cache structures and contention management schemes to support HTM and evaluate them in terms of energy, performance, and complexity. We find that ignoring energy considerations can lead to poor design choices, particularly for resource-constrained embedded platforms. We conclude that with the right balance of energy efficiency and simplicity, HTM will become an attractive choice for future embedded system designs.  相似文献

The main goal of this study was to examine the influence of natural organic matter (NOM) on the efficiency of H?O?/UV advanced oxidation process (AOP) as a preventive treatment for biofilm control. Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 biofilm-forming bacteria were suspended in water and exposed to various AOP conditions with different NOM concentrations, and compared to natural waters. H?O?/UV prevented biofilm formation: (a) up to 24 h post treatment - when residual H?O? was neutralized; (b) completely (days) - when residual H?O? was maintained. At high NOM concentrations (i.e. 25 mg/L NOM or 12.5 mg/L DOC) an additive biofilm control effect was observed for the combined H?O?/UV system compared to UV irradiation alone, after short biofilm incubation times (<24 h). This effect was H?O? concentration dependent and can be explained by the high organic content of these water samples, whereby an increase in NOM could enhance (?)OH production and promote the formation of additional reactive oxygen species. In addition, maintaining an appropriate ratio of bacterial surviving conc.: residual H?O? conc. post-treatment could prevent bacterial regrowth and biofilm formation.  相似文献

We tested a disulfide-rich antifreeze protein as a potential scaffold for design or selection of proteins with the capability of binding periodically organized surfaces. The natural antifreeze protein is a beta-helix with a strikingly regular two-dimensional grid of threonine side chains on its ice-binding face. Amino acid substitutions were made on this face to replace blocks of native threonines with other amino acids spanning the range of beta-sheet propensities. The variants, displaying arrays of distinct functional groups, were studied by mass spectrometry, reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography, thiol reactivity and circular dichroism and NMR spectroscopies to assess their structures and stabilities relative to wild type. The mutants are well expressed in bacteria, despite the potential for mis-folding inherent in these 84-residue proteins with 16 cysteines. We demonstrate that most of the mutants essentially retain the native fold. This disulfide bonded beta-helical scaffold, thermally stable and remarkably tolerant of amino acid substitutions, is therefore useful for design and engineering of macromolecules with the potential to bind various targeted ordered material surfaces.  相似文献

MXenes are a large class of 2D materials that consist of few-atoms-thick layers of transition metal carbides, nitrides, or carbonitrides. The surface functionalization of MXenes has immense implications for their physical, chemical, and electronic properties. However, solution-phase surface functionalization often leads to structural degradation of the MXene electrodes. Here, a non-conventional, single-step atomic surface reduction (ASR) technique is adopted for the surface functionalization of MXene (Ti3C2Tx) in an atomic layer deposition reactor using trimethyl aluminum as a volatile reducing precursor. The chemical nature of the modified surface is characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. The electrochemical properties of the surface-modified MXene are evaluated in acidic and neutral aqueous electrolyte solutions, as well as in conventional Li-ion and Na-ion organic electrolytes. A considerable improvement in electrochemical performance is obtained for the treated electrodes in all the examined electrolyte solutions, expressed in superior rate capability and cycling stability compared to those of the non-treated MXene films. This improved electrochemical performance is attributed to the increased interlayer spacing and modified surface terminations after the ASR process.  相似文献
