Roles of nuclear energy in Japan's future energy systems

The roles of nuclear energy in Japan's future energy systems were analyzed from the viewpoint of securing stable energy supply and reducing carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions. The MARKAL model, developed in the Energy Technology Systems Analysis Programme (ETSAP) of the IEA, was used for establishing several energy scenarios with different assumptions on the availability of nuclear energy, natural gas, and a CO₂ disposal option. Nuclear energy was assumed to apply for synthetic fuel production as well as for conventional electric power generation. By comparing the CO₂ emission and system costs between these energy scenarios, following results were obtained. Without nuclear energy, the CO₂ emissions will hardly be reduced because of substantial increases in coal utilization. CO₂ disposal will be effective in reducing the emissions, however at much higher costs than the case with nuclear energy. The expansion of natural gas imports, if alone, will not reduce the emissions at enough low levels.     

Monoclonal development of squamous cell carcinomas from polyclonal papillary or nodular hyperplasias in the forestomach of C3H/HeN<-->BALB/c chimeric mice treated with N-methyl-N-nitrosourea or diethylnitrosamine

The clonality of epithelial proliferative lesions of forestomach carcinogenesis was immunohistochemically investigated in C3H/HeN<-->BALB/c chimeric mice using a specific antibody to C3H strain specific antigen (CSA) and as well as in terms of microsatellite DNA polymorphism patterns. The C3H/HeN<-->BALB/c chimeric mice were produced by an aggregation procedure. Male chimeric, C3H/HeN, and BALB/c animals were given N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU) 0.5 mg/mouse once a week for a total of 10 times by intragastric intubation or 30 p.p.m. diethylnitrosamine (DEN) in their drinking water for 20 weeks. Those treated with MNU were killed at weeks 11, 25 and 45 and with DEN at week 35. Normal chimeric forestomach epithelium was found to demonstrate mixtures of epithelial cell groups composed of either CSA positive or negative cells. The same was the case for all simple hyperplasias. Papillary and nodular (PN) hyperplasias increased with time even after cessation of MNU treatment and many of them consisted of both CSA positive and negative cell groups. In one case, a CSA positive and a negative cancer were observed to have developed independently in the same PN-hyperplasia consisting of both parental cell types. In 28 tumor bearing chimeric mice, all squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) were composed entirely of either CSA positive or negative tumor cells. However, in two animals with advanced CSA positive cancers and negative cancers, tiny cancer nests composed of both parental type cells were found in association. Microsatellite DNA polymorphism patterns of DNAs sampled from histological sections completely conformed with the outcomes of immunohistochemical staining. The results suggest that PN-hyperplasias are aggregates (polyclonal) of preneoplastic changes from which monoclonal SCCs are derived. Polyclonal cancers may also arise secondarily at low incidence during progression, due to two or more lesions coalescing.     

Increase of Gyrotron Output Power at High-Order Axial Mode Through an After-Cavity Excitation of the Next Transverse Mode

In the experimental study on the frequency tuning of a double-beam gyrotron, an unexpected abrupt increase of the output power was observed for some magnetic field values corresponding to the excitation of high-order axial modes (HOAM). This effect can be explained through an after-cavity interaction of the spent but bunched electron beam with the neighboring transverse mode which has the same azimuthal but the next (i.e., greater by one) radial index with respect to the operating mode. The calculations show that under certain conditions the cyclotron synchronism between the electron beam and the next radial mode occurs in the extended region of an output cone, while the bunching of the spent electron beam is responsible for the excitation of this mode. The influence of some additional factors such as reflections of both modes from the output window, electron velocity spread, and magnetic field profile was studied numerically. It was shown that reflections, mode transformation, and velocity spread can enhance the effect of an abrupt power increase and reduce the starting current of the operating mode. The discovered after-cavity interaction can be either useful for a power increase at the HOAM operation of the frequency-tunable gyrotron or harmful for high cyclotron harmonic operation due to an expansion of the zone of fundamental cyclotron resonance mode excitation.

     

The potential of the gyrotrons for development of the sub-terahertz and the terahertz frequency range — A review of novel and prospective applications

Some recent advancements in the development of powerful high frequency gyrotrons that generate coherent radiation in the sub-terahertz and terahertz regions of the electromagnetic spectrum as well as their typical and novel applications are presented and discussed.     

Dose-dependent promoting effects of catechol on glandular stomach carcinogenesis in BALB/c mice initiated with N-methyl-N-nitrosourea

The effects of catechol administration in the diet on stomach carcinogenesis in mice after initiation with N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU) in the drinking water were investigated in a development trial for a new experimental protocol. Male 6-week-old BALB/c mice were given MNU in the drinking water intermittently for a total of three one-week periods, with one-week intervals, at the concentration of 120 ppm (groups 1 and 2). Groups 3 and 4 served as non initiated controls. From week 7, groups 1 and 3 were divided into three subgroups and the mice were fed on diet containing 0.05% (groups 1a and 3a), 0.2% (groups 1b and 3b), 08% (groups 1c and 3c) or 0% (groups 2 and 4) catechol for 29 weeks. At week 20, appreciably enhanced development of pepsinogen 1-altered pyloric glands was noted in all catechol-treated groups, in a partially dose-dependent manner (12.8 +/- 12.5, 13.8 +/- 11.7, and 24.0 +/- 12.7/100 pyloric glands respectively, for groups 1, 2 and 3). The incidences of adenomas (groups 1, 2 and 3) were also increased. At week 35, dose-dependent induction of adenocarcinomas in groups 1 (3/19), 2 (3/19) and 3 (14/20) was evident. In addition, the depth of invasion of the adenocarcinomas was enhanced by catechol in a dose-dependent manner, though the histological type was not influenced. Thus, the administration of catechol in the diet strongly enhanced the preneoplastic and neoplastic lesions in mouse glandular stomach induced by MNU in the drinking water, in a dose-dependent manner.     

Sequential observation of micrometastasis formation by bacterial lacZ gene-tagged Lewis lung carcinoma cells

Family Psychoeducation and Assertive Community Treatment are both state-of-the-art service systems with rich empirical foundations, demonstrating unusual effectiveness in randomized clinical trials. Recent research suggests a possible additive effect on selected outcomes when the two approaches are integrated. This paper reviews the role of family support and intervention in the care of persons with serious mental illnesses, presents the research literature on psychoeducation, and highlights benefits of merging the multiple-family version of this approach into the work of assertive community treatment programs.     

Improvements of an FDTD-based surge simulation code and its application to the lightning overvoltage calculation of a transmission tower

This paper presents new features recently added to a general-purpose surge simulation code based on the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method. The added features include various-shape conductor models, lumped-parameter circuit-element models, a lightning-channel model, and an integrated analysis environment (IAE). For precisely modelling the shapes of various conductors, the following conductor models have been added: inclined thin wire; disc; square plate; cylinder; cone; and quadrangular pyramid. The lumped-parameter circuit-element models allow the user to represent the lumped impedance of an apparatus placed inside the analysis space. The lightning-channel model realizes a return-stroke development at a speed slower than the light speed. The IAE includes a Graphical User Interface (GUI), which allows the user to enter geometrical data in a visual way. It also provides a waveform plotting program for viewing voltage, current, electric-field, and magnetic-field waveforms and a movie program for displaying the animation of a transient electric/magnetic field intensity distribution. For an illustrative example, the lightning overvoltage calculation of a transmission tower is presented.     

Development of a kW Level-200 GHz Gyrotron FU CW GI with an Internal Quasi-optical Mode Convertor

Development of gyrotrons with an internal mode convertor has started in Research Center for Development of Far-Infrared Region, University of Fukui (FIR FU). As the first gyrotron of such a kind, we have designed and manufactured Gyrotron FU CW GI. It operates at 203 GHz at fundamental cyclotron resonance. We have designed a cavity and a mode convertor under some constraints such as reuse of an electron gun and small diameter of a magnet bore. Designed output power is about 1 kW. We have succeeded in observation of a circular radiation pattern. The maximum observed output power is 0.5 kW for the setting cathode voltage of 20 kV and the beam current of 0.5 A. This success makes gyrotron development in FIR FU to proceed to a new stage.
