Microelectrode recording in the thalamus of pigeons subjected to tilt and sinusoidal rotational stimuli around the vertical, longitudinal and transversal axes revealed vestibularly driven units in two thalamic nuclei, the nucleus posteroventralis and the nucleus principalis precommissuralis. Many of these units responded in a complex manner suggesting that inputs from contralateral and ipsilateral cupulae and maculae converged on them. A few units received additional visual or proprioceptive information. The homology relationship with a mammalian vestibular thalamic nucleus is discussed briefly. 相似文献
We use Monod kinetics to calibrate previously published data that documentthe aerobic biodegradation of hydrocarbon vapors in soil microcosms from a weathered petroleum spill site. Monod kinetics offer insight into biodegradation mechanics because they address biomass growth as well as substrate depletion. A blend of five aromatics and five alkanes dose the microcosm sets at four strengths, and a finite difference model describes the response superimposed across the constituent substrates. An observed initial biomass X0 of 125 g biomass/m(3) soil moisture and an endogendous decay rate b of 0.102 day(-1) calibrate all four dosages and agree with heterotrophic plate counts. Common maximum specific growth rates microMJ and half saturation constants KSJ calibrate each constituent across the four dosages. The biodegradable alkanes exhibit microMJ values ranging from 0.0190 to 0.0996 day(-1), while the aromatic rates vary from 0.0946 to 0.322 day(-1). One of the alkanes (2,2,4-trimethylpentane) is recalcitrant. The half saturation constants range from 0.000083 to 0.000355 g substrate/m(3) soil moisture for the biodegradable alkanes, which imply zero-order kinetics. The aromatic KSJ values vary from 5.02 to 14.3 g substrate/m(3) soil moisture, and suggest first-order kinetics. The yield YJ increases with dosage concentration for all the biodegradable constituents, varying from 0.0533 to 1.58 g biomass/g substrate. 相似文献
The hydrogenolysis of methylcyclopentane at 520 K on platinum model catalysts was studied and the mechanism of this reaction investigated. Catalysts of low metal dispersion (<0.15) were prepared by high-vacuum evaporation of platinum onto thin films of amorphous alumina. After annealing at 770 K in air and hydrogen treatment at 520 K the mean size of the Pt particles was about 10 nm as determined by electron microscopy. On these catalysts the reaction products are mainly 2-methylpentane and 3-methylpentane and only 9–14% n-hexane is formed, as is to be expected for large Pt particles. On top of these catalysts a thin layer of Al2O3 (0.3 nm mean thickness) was then deposited in order to reduce the surface area of platinum in relation to the phase boundary platinum/alumina. Thereafter a decrease of the catalytic activity, as well as a shift in the product distribution, was observed. The n-hexane content was significantly enhanced (up to 22%) and the ratio of the three products was comparable to that usually obtained with Pt catalysts of higher dispersion. This result supports a reaction model which consists of two parallel reactions (i) occurring on the platinum surface and producing mainly 2-methylpentane and 3-methylpentane and (ii) occurring on the phase boundary platinum/support and producing additional n-hexane. 相似文献
The three halothane genotypes (NN, Nn, and nm) were identified by measuring the capacity for Ca2+ accumulation by sarcoplasmic reticulum in whole muscle homogenate preparations of M. longissimus dorsi with a Ca2+ specific electrode at 35°C. Significant differences (P < 0·001) in deterioration (%) of Ca2+ accumulation, 12% for NN, 35% for Nn, and 81% for nn pigs, were observed after ageing the whole muscle homogenate preparations for 24 h in ice.
Predictions of meat quality in live pigs (n = 34) based on the values for water-holding capacity, assessed as fluid (g/0·5 g wet wt LD), and pH (fluid) by using small biopsy LD samples (Cheah et al. 1993) were performed on all the halothane genotypes. The halothane genotype NN (n = 11) showed a fluid value of 0·37 ± 0·01 and a pH (fluid) value of 6·62 ± 0·03 as compared with 0·61 ± 0·02 and 5·84 ± 0·04, respectively, for the halothane genotype nn (n = 13). The Nn pigs (n = 10) showed fluid (0·49 ± 0·03) and pH (fluid) (6·19 ± 0·11) values between those values observed for the two homozygotes (NN and nn). Predictions of meat quality in live pigs from biopsy LD muscles were confirmed from assessments on post-mortem LD muscles based on pH1 and fibre optic probe (FOP) measurements.
The extent of deterioration (%) in Ca2+ accumulation showed high correlations with fluid (r = −0·861) and pH (fluid) (r = −0·831) in the biopsy LD samples, and with pH1 (r = 0·663), FOP (r = −0·812), and drip (%) loss (r = −0·777) in the post-mortem LD samples. 相似文献
Abstract: Alpha‐lactalbumin is an important dairy protein ingredient, and has been widely used in high‐protein foods such as infant formula and nutritional bars for its nutritional and functional properties. The purpose of this study was to investigate the moisture‐induced aggregation of alpha‐lactalbumin in premixed protein dough model systems, and to illustrate the effects of temperature, cations, and pH on the progress of protein aggregation. Our results suggested that storage temperature was a critical factor for protein aggregation in model systems, and the formation of protein aggregates became faster with increases in storage temperature. Calcium significantly improved the thermal stability of alpha‐lactalbumin and slowed down the formation of protein aggregates. The increases in pH accelerated the aggregation of alpha‐lactalbumin. Our results also suggested that the formation of intermolecular disulfide bonds together with noncovalent interactions are the main mechanisms resulting in the moisture‐induced aggregation of alpha‐lactalbumin in model systems. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are currently incorporated into various consumer products, and numerous new applications and products containing CNTs are expected in the future. The potential for negative effects caused by CNT release into the environment is a prominent concern and numerous research projects have investigated possible environmental release pathways, fate, and toxicity. However, this expanding body of literature has not yet been systematically reviewed. Our objective is to critically review this literature to identify emerging trends as well as persistent knowledge gaps on these topics. Specifically, we examine the release of CNTs from polymeric products, removal in wastewater treatment systems, transport through surface and subsurface media, aggregation behaviors, interactions with soil and sediment particles, potential transformations and degradation, and their potential ecotoxicity in soil, sediment, and aquatic ecosystems. One major limitation in the current literature is quantifying CNT masses in relevant media (polymers, tissues, soils, and sediments). Important new directions include developing mechanistic models for CNT release from composites and understanding CNT transport in more complex and environmentally realistic systems such as heteroaggregation with natural colloids and transport of nanoparticles in a range of soils. 相似文献
The zebrafish embryo toxicity test has been proposed as an alternative for the acute fish toxicity test, which is required by various regulations for environmental risk assessment of chemicals. We investigated the reliability of the embryo test by probing organic industrial chemicals with a wide range of physicochemical properties, toxicities, and modes of toxic action. Moreover, the relevance of using measured versus nominal (intended) exposure concentrations, inclusion of sublethal endpoints, and different exposure durations for the comparability with reported fish acute toxicity was explored. Our results confirm a very strong correlation of zebrafish embryo to fish acute toxicity. When toxicity values were calculated based on measured exposure concentrations, the slope of the type II regression line was 1 and nearly passed through the origin (1 to 1 correlation). Measured concentrations also explained several apparent outliers. Neither prolonged exposure (up to 120 h) nor consideration of sublethal effects led to a reduced number of outliers. Yet, two types of compounds were less lethal to embryos than to adult fish: a neurotoxic compound acting via sodium channels (permethrin) and a compound requiring metabolic activation (allyl alcohol). 相似文献
The hymenopteran parasitoid, Theocolax elegans (Westwood), and transgenic avidin maize powder were tested to determine if their individual or combined use would protect stored grain from infestation by both internal and external insect pests. Small-scale tests were conducted in plastic jars containing 3 kg of non-transgenic maize. We tested treatments of 0.3% powdered avidin maize, the parasitoid wasp, and the combination of the parasitoid plus 0.3% powdered avidin maize. One pair each of Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), and Cryptolestes ferrugineus (Stephens) was added to each jar. After 8 weeks, the entire contents of each jar were examined for adult insects. Control and avidin maize powders had no detrimental effects on the beneficial insect parasitoid T. elegans. The parasitoid suppressed populations of the internal feeder S. zeamais. The avidin maize powder treatment had no effect on S. zeamais because these larvae developed inside the maize kernels where no avidin maize powder was present. For S. zeamais, the combination treatment was not significantly different from the parasitoid treatment. In contrast, populations of the external feeder T. castaneum were not suppressed by the parasitoid but were suppressed by the avidin maize powder treatment. The parasitoid-avidin combination treatment produced the greatest percentage reduction for all three insect species and resulted in 78%, 94%, and 70% reductions in populations of S. zeamais, T. castaneum, and C. ferrugineus, respectively, when compared to the control treatment. The percentage reductions for the parasitoid treatment were 70%, 8%, and 20% for S. zeamais, T. castaneum, and C. ferrugineus, respectively. For the avidin maize powder treatment, populations of S. zeamais, T. castaneum, and C. ferrugineus were reduced by 10%, 85%, and 40%, respectively. The combination treatment of avidin maize powder plus the release of parasitoid wasps was superior to either treatment alone when applied to mixed populations of internal and external feeders. 相似文献
