A study of the transfer of radioactive materials by steam and water,and the chemical stability of deposits in the steam-water loop of the first atomic power station

An important problem in the design of boiling reactors or reactors with boiling and superheating of the steam in channels is the study of the level of contamination of steam by radioactive materials, generated and directed into the turbine, the physicochemical properties of the radioactive deposits and the possibility of deactivation of the internal surfaces of the pipes and turbine.At the first atomic power station, studies were made on the transfer of radioactive materials by steam and water in the loop built into the first circuit of the power station. A determination was made of the coefficient of deposition of the materials on the internal surface of the pipes, and the chemical stability of the deposits was studied. Studies were made on problems of deactivation of some parts of the steam power equipment of the station.     

Phosphocreatine metabolic indices during increased and decreased energy expenditures in man

Changes in phosphocreatine metabolism (creatinine excretion in the urine and arginine content in plasma--one of the amino acids that are involved in creatine synthesis) were studied in 40 male test subjects who performed increased or decreased work and consumed standard protein food. It was shown that there was a correlation between creatinine excretion in the urine and the content of arginine in plasma, on the one hand, and the amount of nitrogen consumed, on the other. It was also found that at increased or decreased energy expenditures creatinine excretion and arginine content elevated. These data are indicative of changes in phosphocreatine metabolism in response to the environmental effects.     

The effect of radiation on the properties of silicone rubber

As a result of -radiation, silicone rubber undergoes a series of changes due to radiation cross-linking. The modulus of elasticity increases linearily with a dose up to 150–200 megarads. The vitrification temperature (– 120 to- 125 ° C) hardly changes up to 100 megarads and at 270 megarads it is –110 to –115 ° C. With cross-linking, the rate of crystallization and degree of crystallinity decrease. The melting point falls from – 35 ° C for the initial material to – 55 ° C for rubber Irradiated with a dose of 40 megarads. A dose of 100 megarads practically completely eliminates crystallization. This dose produces rigid rubbers with a modulus of 200– 250 kg/cm² and a high degree of frost resistance, (Tg –125 ° C), but with a very small breaking stretch (15–20%) with a strength of 30–40 kg/cm².     

Hydraulic resistance of narrow annular channels with helical fins
