Gateless synchronous counters with D flip-flops

A new approach to the state assignment problem for the synthesis of sequential switching circuits is applied to solve completely the synthesis problem of gateless counters. The necessary and sufficient condition that assures that the counter may be synthesised without gates is found. A method is developed to determine a priori if a given state table corresponds to a circuit that may be synthesised without gates.     

Quantitative measurement of protein kinase C immunoreactivity in rod bipolar cells of the goldfish retina

The intensity of the immunohistochemical reaction (IIR) against the alpha species of protein kinase C (PKC) was quantified in the rod bipolar cells (RBC) of the goldfish retina using of image analysis. Retinae incubated in control Ringer solution showed similar IIR in both the soma and the axon terminal (IIR-ratio approximately 1). Activation of PKC induces the 'transport' of the enzyme to the synaptic terminal of RBC and an increase in the IIR-ratio. In the present report, the effect of retinal neurotransmitters on the IIR-ratio and the time course of PKC transport was studied.     

Seroprevalence of B19 parvovirus infection in patients with acute polyarthritis

Over a period of 29 months, from January 1991 to December 1994, all cases of acute polyarthritis seen at the Rheumatology Service in our Institution were studied to determine the seroprevalence of parvovirus B19 (B19) infection. The variables studied included: age and sex of patients, presence of fever and rash, Anti-B19 IgM and IgE serological determinations (ELISA, Mardix Lab.), follow-up time and final diagnosis. The study included 36 patients (22 women and 14 men, mean age 34 +/- 19 years). Thirteen and seven patients had fever and cutaneous rash, respectively. Anti-B19 IgM serology was positive in 4 patients; in 2 of them IgG seroconversion was confirmed. The mean follow-up time was 14 +/- 9 months. Final diagnoses included undifferentiated polyarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, B19 polyarthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and miscellaneous in 19, 7, 4, 2, and 4 patients, respectively. Seroprevalence of B19 infection in acute polyarthritis in our area was 11%, approximately.     

Attention, awareness of contingencies, and control in spatial localization: A qualitative difference approach.

The qualitative difference method for distinguishing between aware and unaware processes was applied here to a spatial priming task. Participants were asked simply to locate a target stimulus that appeared in one of four locations, and this target stimulus was preceded by a prime in one of the same four locations. The prime location predicted the location of the target with high probability (p = .75), but prime and target mismatched on a task-relevant feature (identity, color). Across 5 experiments, we observed repetition costs in the absence of awareness of the contingency, and repetition benefits in the presence of awareness of the contingency. These results were particularly clear-cut in Experiment 4, in which awareness was defined by reference to self-reported strategy use. Finally, Experiment 5 showed that frequency-based implicit learning effects were present in our experiments but that these implicit learning effects were not strong enough to override repetition costs that pushed performance in the opposite direction. The results of these experiments constitute a novel application of the qualitative difference method to the study of awareness, learning of contingencies, and strategic control. Efficient computation of amplitude and phase maps in nuclearmedicine equilibrium-gated cardiac studies

The Goertzel algorithm is proposed as a method to obtain the first harmonic coefficient of time activity curves from equilibrium gated cardiac studies. The coefficients are used to produce functional images. The algorithm achieves an important reduction in the number of operations and memory accesses needed to compute the coefficients     

Optimization and approximation algorithm for placement of records on linear storage devices

This Paper deals with the allocation of records on a linear storage device to minimize the average access time when the request probabilities to the recores are not independent. For sequential access, algorithms to obtain optimal and approximate solutions are presented. The approximation algorithm is also used with little modification for direct access. The performance of the approximation algorithm is estimated.     

An Approximate Method of Calculating the Heat Transfer Coefficient in Metal Bars

A leastsquares method is used to determine the heat transfer coefficient H of a solid copper bar in air at constant temperature. For this purpose, twelve steady states and their corresponding cooling curves were measured with temperature excesses of the metal over the surrounding air in the range of 11–74°C and were compared to those calculated using a mathematical model to solve the equation for the heat flow in the bar. The model reduces an experimental double exponential law to an overall single exponential and gives similar behavior, within 10% of statistical uncertainty, for H in the steady state and in cooling. The values obtained in this study are in qualitative agreement with the values given in the literature under similar experimental conditions, but there it is not specified how they are obtained in solids.
