The nucleation effect of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) to low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and the structure of the resulting directional LDPE morphology was studied using thermo-optics, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction and microfractography. Thermo-optics and DSC showed a higher nucleation activity of HDPE compared with the heterogeneities within the LDPE melt. The parallel and more perfect arrangement of the chain segments in transcrystalline LDPE resulted in a higher melting temperature, a difference in unit-cell spacing and a less ductile behaviour during fracture than with spherulitic LDPE.  相似文献

One of the most efficient non-perturbative methods for the calculation of thermal properties of quantum systems is the Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm, as evidenced by its use in large-scale lattice quantum chromodynamics calculations. The performance of this algorithm is determined by the speed at which the fermion operator is applied to a given vector, as it is the central operation in the preconditioned conjugate gradient iteration. We study a simple implementation of these operations for the fermion matrix of the Hubbard model in d+1 spacetime dimensions, and report a performance comparison between a 2.66 GHz Intel Xeon E5430 CPU and an NVIDIA Tesla C1060 GPU using double-precision arithmetic. We find speedup factors ranging between 30 and 350 for d=1, and in excess of 40 for d=3. We argue that such speedups are of considerable impact for large-scale simulational studies of quantum many-body systems.  相似文献

Design details and demonstration data are presented for an (Al,Ga)As monolithic tapered rib waveguide achieving modal spot-size transformation. The tapered rib adiabatic following fiber coupler structure (TRAFFIC) achieves two-dimensional (2-D) expansion of the output optical mode of single-transverse-mode semiconductor waveguide modulators and lasers using a one-dimensional (1-D) taper between noncritical initial and final taper widths which are compatible with optical lithographic techniques. Measurements are presented of total mode expansion losses between ~1.5-2.0 dB and semiconductor to single-mode-fiber waveguide coupling losses of ~0.5-1.0 dB for doped pin optical-modulator-type waveguides using the TRAFFIC waveguide. A semiconductor laser with a TRAFFIC tapered-rib mode-expansion section and measured coupling loss between the laser output and single-mode fiber of only 0.9 dB is described. Finally, a TRAFFIC Spot-size transformer for undoped waveguide modulators with total mode expansion losses of 1.84 dB and excellent modal behavior at 1.32-μm wavelength is presented. The TRAFFiC structure is particularly well suited for integration with both active and passive etched rib waveguide devices. Fabrication is relatively simple, requiring only patterning and etching of the tapered waveguide and uniform-width outer mesa waveguide without any epitaxial regrowth  相似文献

Ion beam purity is of crucial importance to many basic and applied studies in nuclear science. Selective photodetachment has been proposed to suppress unwanted species in negative ion beams while preserving the intensity of the species of interest. A highly efficient technique based on photodetachment in a gas-filled radio frequency quadrupole ion cooler has been demonstrated. In off-line experiments with stable ions, up to 10(4) times suppression of the isobar contaminants in a number of interesting radioactive negative ion beams has been demonstrated. For selected species, this technique promises new experimental possibilities in studies on exotic nuclei, accelerator mass spectrometry, and fundamental properties of negative atomic and molecular ions.  相似文献

The production of aluminium of primary quality from scrap by electrorefining may become an option of strategic importance. Two important requirements are: (i) substantial energy savings compared to electrowinning, and (ii) easy recycling of alloying elements and molten electrolyte without ecological hazards. The use of molten chloride instead of fluoride electrolytes is preferred as emissions are low, purification of contaminated salts in aqueous solution is easy and oxide ceramic materials for cells and diaphragms can be used. The measurement of formal potentials of most important alloying elements shows that only manganese should be expected to cause trouble in electrorefining of aluminium scrap from alkali chloride melts. Preparative batch refining experiments show that all these alloying metals can be easily separated; manganese is very likely because its activity in aluminium is decreased by alloying or compound formation in aluminium. Results with cells divided by alumina diaphragms show that energy consumptions can be kept below 5 kWh (kg Al)–1.  相似文献

The potential of electroadsorption/desorption on activated carbon for waste water treatment of industrial effluents is studied. Adsorption isotherms of hydrophobic differently charged model substances on activated carbon were measured in order to obtain specific information about the influence of the charge (+1,–1 and 0) on the adsorbability of comparable, aromatic species and the influence of the bed potential on the adsorption equilibria. In all these cases the adsorption equilibria show a dependence on applied potential in electrolyte of approximately 1m ionic strength. With electrosorption from aqueous solution, a fivefold enhancement of the concentration in one potential controlled adsorption/desorption cycle is achievable. The use of the solvent methanol instead of water for desorption allows for a concentration enhancement by a factor of hundred in the desorptive step. The adsorption capacity of the activated carbon changes only slightly with cycle number. Two cell designs for the performance of potential controlled adsorption/desorption cycles on the large scale are discussed.  相似文献

Binary anode electrocatalyst formulations were prepared by adsorption of phthalocyanine and tetraphenylporphyrin complexes of different transition metals on a commercial carbon supported platinum catalyst. Only after pyrolyzing the complexes at 700 °C under nitrogen were catalysts of some activity obtained. A binary Pt/Ni electrocatalyst prepared by this procedure exhibits considerable anodic catalytic activity in the acidic environment of the Nafion® electrolyte for reformate and direct methanol oxidation for more than 400 h without deterioration. Ternary electrocatalyst formulations Pt/Ru/W = 1/1/y were produced according to the Bönnemann method. The Pt/Ru/W catalyst of 1/1/1.5 (mol/mol/mol) composition is optimal. Compared to the Pt/Ru catalyst, it enhances the performance of reformate (H2 + 150 ppm CO) fuel cells by 50% and of direct methanol fuel cells (steam/methanol vapour = 50:1 mol/mol) by 80%. Attached to a GC electrode by a thin Nafion® film, the catalysts were also tested for methanol oxidation in aqueous methanol solutions in half cells by slow potential stepping. Oil migration in filled pralines is a phenomenon that is highly correlated with the occurrence of chocolate bloom. In this study the potential to suppress or prevent oil migration by incorporation of sterol/sterolster-structured organogels was evaluated. Different quantities, 2.5 or 14% (w/w), of gel with structurant levels of either 10 or 25% (w/w) were studied in a layered model system. The gel was either a part of the nougat or of the chocolate phase, or as a separate layer. Samples were monitored regularly for a period of 24 weeks at storage temperatures of 10, 18 and 28 °C. The amount of migrated oil was determined via DSC analysis of a surface sample. The results indicate that, despite the additional oil brought into the system via the oleogel, the level of oil found in the chocolate layer is reduced through the presence of the gel. In particular, the three-layer system and gelled chocolate appear to be promising routes to either suppress oil migration or improve nutritional profiles by incorporation of liquid oils.  相似文献
