Existing State and Partitioning of Rare Earth on Weathered Ores

The existing state and partitioning of rare earth （RE） on weathered ores in Longnan County（LN）, Xingfeng County（XF） and Ninghua County（NH） were characterized systematically by standard geological analytical methods. It is found that RE in the weathered rare earth ores exist as four phases： （a） water soluble, （b） ion-exchangeable, （c） colloidal sediment （oxides）, （d） minerals, in which mainly as ion exchangeable phase, accounting for nearly 80% of total RE, with about 20% in the form of colloid sediment phase and mineral phase, but very little as aqueous soluble phase. These rare earth partitioning were mainly chosen mid-heavy RE elements, occupying above 60%, but not equal in the four phases. The mid-heavy RE elements were primarily enriched in the ion exchangeable phase up to 40%, while the containment of cerium dioxide is below 2 %. The cerium deficiency occurs in the ion exchangeable phase in weathered ore. It results from that the Ce^3＋ is oxidized into Ce^4＋ and changes into CeO2. For LN ore, the containment of Y is high in weathered ore because Y-minerals are abundant in original rock.

Theory of Three-Dimensional Discontinuous Deformation Analysis and Its Application to a Slope Toppling at Amatoribashi, Japan

A three-dimensional (3D) rock slope toppling occurred in a discontinuous rock mass. To simulate the failure process and study the mechanism of this rock failure with contact and large displacement in 3D, a new discrete numerical method has been developed called the 3D discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA). This article first introduces the basic principles and then derives the formulas in detail. Finally, the slope failure simulation is applied as an example to investigate the applicability of this new method to rock slope failure research. The simulation results indicate the advantages of using this new method to study the mechanism of a rock slope failure with 3D behavior.     

Case Study: River Training and Its Effects on Fluvial Processes in the Lower Yellow River, China

More than 50?years’ river training practices in the Lower Yellow River provide valuable experience in river management for flood control in rivers having rapid flow changes, silting beds, and active channel migrations and are of importance in understanding the fluvial processes in regulated rivers with high sediment loads. Planned channel alignments for river training in the Lower Yellow River usually consist of a series of consecutive moderate bends representing the natural tendency of flows. Flow guide works, namely spur dikes, were constructed on the concave banks of the planned bends to protect the channel against scouring and migration by deflecting the current away from bends and further guiding the main flow from one bend to the next one. As a result, well-planned flow guide works can play a crucial role in limiting channel shifting and migration and in establishing a relatively stable channel. Enough flow guide works, on both sides together reaching about 80% of the channel length, may change the transitional and braided channel patterns to a confined meandering pattern.     

Self-Reported Gambling-Related Suicidality Among Gambling Helpline Callers.

Problem gamblers often attribute suicidal ideation or attempts to their gambling. Logistic regression analyses were applied to data from problem gamblers (N = 986) calling a helpline. Problem gamblers reporting gambling-related suicidality (n = 252; 25.6%) were more likely than those denying it (n = 734; 74.4%) to acknowledge family, financial, legal, and mental and substance-related problems. Of problem gamblers acknowledging gambling-related suicidality, those reporting gambling-related suicide attempts (n = 53; 21.5%) were more likely than those denying them (n = 193; 78.5%) to acknowledge gambling-related illegal behaviors, mental health and substance abuse treatment, and family histories of alcohol problems, and were less likely to report prior gambling treatment. 轧辊表面形貌与电加工参数关系的研究

分析了衡量冷轧钢板和毛化轧辊的主要表面形貌参数,通过实验研究了电火花加工参数对表面形貌的影响,并建立表面特征参数与电加工参数的关系模型.由于实验材料和实验方法与实际轧辊电火花毛化基本相同,所以所得结果对轧辊表面毛化技术的研究具有实际意义,可以用于轧辊毛化过程的表面形貌预测和控制.     

Risk Concession Model for Build/Operate/Transfer Contract Projects

This paper extends the build–operate–transfer (BOT) concession model (BOTCcM) to establishing a risk concession model for BOT contract projects. The decision for a concession period is one of the most important decisions in determining a BOT contract. BOTCcM presents an alternative method to assist in determining a concession period that can protect the basic interests of both the investor and the government concerned. However, there is a major limitation in using the model, namely it gives no consideration to the impacts of risks on the estimation of various economic variables in the model. This study considers the risk impacts to the BOTCcM model and presents an additional risk concession model. This model provides an approach for formulating a concession period to consider the impacts of risks and, at the same time, protect the basic interests of both the investor and the government concerned. A hypothetical case is used to show the procedures of formulating the risk concession period through the assistance of the Monte Carlo simulation method.     

Experimental Study on Soluble Oxygen in Hot Metal Pretreatment

The change law of oxygen activity was studied by using Fe₂O₃‐CaO‐CaF₂ and Na₂CO₃/Na₂SO₄ fluxes under laboratory conditions. At the same time, the range of oxygen activity which is in favour of removing phosphorus and sulphur simultaneously was also investigated. The results showed that the oxygen activity in the iron melt during de‐phosphorization can reach up to 5.91×10^?6~10.03×10^?6 in about 5 min and then only varies within a narrow range. A final phosphorus content of 0.008% and a final sulphur content of 0.003% can be obtained if the oxygen activity is controlled within the range of 4.5×10^?6~8.0×10^?6.     

Strain Measurement on the Toroidal Field （TF） Coil Cases

The stress-strain state of the structure is a matter of interest to designer. The strain measurement of superconducting magnets at cryogenic temperature is a specific technique. Based on strain measurement of TF coil case for EAST, this paper presents a measuring technique at cryogenic temperature and on intense magnetic field. The compensation methods for both temperature and magnetic field effects of the gauges, together with the measured results are involved, and the discussions of the measured results are given in the paper.
