Kinetics of small fatigue cracks in steel during cyclic loading

The kinetics of development of fatigue microcracks in a high-strength 08Kh14AN4MD steel is studied when a cantilever specimen with several notches is subjected to rotational bending tests. The specific feature of the tests consists in the fact that, when the specimen is loaded at a constant load, different stress amplitudes are realized in different notches. As a result, after the sample has failed across the section with the maximum stress, a longitudinal polished section of the specimen contains fatigue cracks having nucleated in the mouths of the other notches at lower stress amplitudes. A relation between inflection points in the fatigue curve and the conditions of local and developed yield in a notch has been established. Fatigue fracture mechanisms at a superhigh number of loading cycles are studied, and their relation to the structure near a crack is found. A rapid method for estimating the fatigue limit at a superhigh number of loading cycles is proposed.

Pretreatment of Highly Polluted Pharmaceutical Waste Broth by Wet Air Oxidation

The preoxidation of a highly polluted waste pharmaceutical fermentation broth using wet air oxidation (WAO) has been studied as a possible method for the effective removal of organics. The applied (pre)treatment method should enhance the biotreatability of the pharmaceutical fermentation broth in terms of reduced initial toxicity and higher biodegradability. Preliminary experiments in the pilot biological treatment plant were successful only at low organic loads, whereas the system collapses at higher ones. The characterization of the fermentation broth was started by common physicochemical analysis, whereas several bioassays were used to determine its impact on biological treatment plants and the environment. Toxicity prior to and after WAO was determined using the acute Vibrio fischeri test, measurement of inhibition of O2 consumption, and the Daphnia magna acute test. Ready biodegradability of the treated and untreated broth has also been assessed. WAO experiments were accomplished in the 2?L batch reactor at different temperatures (240/280°C) and operating pressures. WAO experiments confirmed reduction of the toxicity toward microorganisms, whereas oxidized wastewater was more toxic to daphnids. Biodegradability of the oxidized broth has also been enhanced. Further work has been focused on designing appropriate combination of WAO and biological processes.

Micromechanism of corrosion fracture of the plates of heat exchangers

We have studied the micromechanism of corrosion fracture of heat-transfer plates of a heat exchanger. The operation of heat exchangers under conditions of contamination of the plates with a sediment from water leads to their local corrosion under the sediment. The conditions of operation of the heat exchangers being equal, heat-transfer plates made of AiSi316Ti steel worked 2.36 times as long as those of AiSi304L steel. The corrosion fracture of plates under the sediment began from pitting initiation near nonmetallic inclusions of a certain nature. Afterwards, these pittings built up into corrosion spots by the mechanism of stress corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement. __________ Translated from Fizyko-Khimichna Mekhanika Materialiv, Vol. 43, No. 1, pp. 110–116, January–February, 2007.

八种新功能晶体的比热及其与相变掺杂物关系的实验研究

本文对八种新型功能晶体Ｌｉ２Ｂ４Ｏ７、Ｂｉ１２ＴｉＯ２０、Ｂｉ１２ＧｅＯ２０、Ｂｉ１２ＧｅＯ２０、Ｂｉ４Ｇｅ３Ｏ１２、Ｓｒ１－ｘＢａｘＮｂ２Ｏ６（ｘ＝０．３３，０．４８）、ＬｉＴａＯ３等在１３０～９７３Ｋ范围内的比热行为及其与相变、组分之间的关系进行了实验研究，给出了比热的多项式拟合方程，并与用纽曼－卡普定律及用Ｗｉｋｅｌｍａｎｎ经验方程的比热计算值作了对比，为晶体比热的估算提供了依据和方法。
