Transport of the dicyanogold(i) anion

We have shown that dicyanogold(I), [Au(CN)(2)](-) is a common metabolite found in blood and urine samples of patients treated with different gold based drugs. Some patients have high levels of gold within their red blood cells (RBCs). Size exclusion and C18 reversed phase chromatography show that the majority of the gold in RBC lysates is bound to protein, but small molecules such as dicyanogold(I) and gold-glutathione complexes are also present. Dicyanogold incubation with red blood cells in vitro leads to a rapid and complete uptake of gold. This uptake is unaffected by DIDS, an inhibitor of the anion channel, but is blocked by the addition of external cyanide. Dicyanogold is also readily taken up by H9 cells, a continuous CD(4+) cell line. This uptake is significantly inhibited by N-ethylmaleimide, suggesting a requirement for sulfhydryl groups. Dicyanogold inhibits the replication of the AIDS virus, HIV, in a cell culture model.     

Chirp filtering in the fractional Fourier domain

In the Wigner domain of a one-dimensional function, a certain chirp term represents a rotated line delta function. On the other hand, a fractional Fourier transform (FRT) can be associated with a rotation of the Wigner-distribution function by an angle connected with the FRT order. Thus with the FRT tool a chirp and a delta function can be transformed one into the other. Taking the chirp as additive noise, the FRT is used for filtering the line delta function in the appropriate fractional Fourier domain. Experimental filtering results for a Gaussian input function, which is modulated by an additive chirp noise, are shown. Excellent agreement between experiments and computer simulations is achieved.     

Shadow Doppler technique for sizing particles of arbitrary shape

The output from a linear diode array is used in a modified laser Doppler velocimeter to measure the size and shape of irregular particles. The sizing accuracy for transparent and opaque particles between 30 and 140 μm is better than 10%. The inaccuracy caused by trajectories that lay at angles of less than 24° to the axis of the array was less than +5%, and a further inaccuracy of +5% was caused by defocusing of the particle from the center of the velocimeter measuring volume by up to ±500 μm. The advantages of the shadow Doppler technique over other techniques for sizing irregular particles, such as amplitude systems with pointer volumes, are that the shadow Doppler technique records shape, the optical arrangement is more robust, less precise alignment is required, and the equipment can be constructed at low cost.     

Determination of the average orientation of DNA in the octopus sperm Eledone cirrhossa through polarized light scattering

The coupled-dipole approximation has been used to model polarized light-scattering data obtained from the sperm of the octopus Eledone cirrhosa. Mueller scattering-matrix elements (which describe how a sample alters the intensity and degree of polarization of scattered light) were measured as a function of angle. The sample was modeled as a helical fiber believed to correspond to a DNA protein complex. It was necessary to propose an inherent anisotropy in the polarizability of the fiber in order to fit the data. The direction of the principle axes of the polarizability were determined by comparing the model with experimental data. The results suggest that the 2-nm DNA fibers are perpendicular to the thick fiber that defines the helical geometry of the octopus sperm head.     

Optical wavelet matched filter

A shift-invariant optical continuous wavelet transform is used for pattern recognition. We propose an Voptical wavelet matched filter that performs optical wavelet transforms for edge enhancement and the correlation between two wavelet transforms in a single step. This new bandpass matched filter shows improved discrimination capability with respect to the conventional matched filter and improved signal-to-noise ratio with respect to the phase-only matched filter. The wavelet matched filter provides flexibility of an adaptive choice of the scale factors of the wavelets that permit the selection of size and orientation of the smoothing function used in edge enhancement and the optimization of the performance of the filter. Optical experimental results are shown.     

Optical signal inverter of erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet with red shift of laser diodes

An optical signal inverter was demonstrated in a simple structure that combined a laser diode with Er-doped YAG crystal. The optical signal inversion occurred at a response time of 7 ns and was caused by the decrease of transmission of Er:YAG against the red shift of the wavelength of the laser diode.     

Thermal-stress-induced birefringence in bow-tie optical fibers

Birefringence induced by thermal stress in bow-tie optical fibers is studied in detail by the use of the finite-element method. Results of computer modeling show that a higher degree of birefringence can be obtained with the use of a larger cladding and larger stress-applying zones in the fiber.     

Graded-index polymer optical fiber for high-speed data communication

We successfully obtained a high-bandwidth (1 GHz km) and low-loss (90 dB/km at 0.572 μm of wavelength) graded-index polymer optical fiber by using the interfacial-gel polymerization technique, in which we used an unreactive component to obtain the quadratic refractive-index distribution. This high-bandwidth graded-index polymer optical fiber makes it possible to transmit a high-speed optical signal in a short-range network, which is not possible when we use the step-index type of polymer optical fiber commercially available.     

Spherical gradient-index polymer lens with low spherical aberration

A sphere lens with a spherical gradient index (GRIN) was prepared by the modified suspension polymerization technique. GRIN spheres with quadratic- and linear-index distributions were obtained by two different methods to confirm the effect of the GRIN profile on the focusing property of the sphere lens. It was confirmed in both theory and experiment that the spherical aberration of such GRIN spheres was remarkably decreased compared with that of a homogeneous sphere.
