The antimicrobial peptides magainin 2 and PGLa, discovered in the skin of the African clawed frog, Xenopus laevis, exhibit marked synergism [Westerhoff, H. V., Zasloff, M., Rosner, J. L., Hendler, R. W., de Waal, A., Vaz Gomes, A., Jongsma, A. P. M., Riethorst, A., and Juretic, D., Eur. J. Biochem. 228, 257-264 (1995)], although the mechanism is not yet clear. They are believed to kill bacteria by permeabilizing membranes. In this study, we examined the interactions of these peptides in lipid bilayers. PGLa, like magainin 2, preferentially interacts with acidic lipids, forming an amphipathic helix. The peptide induces the release of a water-soluble dye, calcein, entrapped within liposomes. The coexistence of magainin 2 enhances membrane permeabilization, which is maximal at a 1:1 molar ratio. Fluorescence experiments using L18W-PGLa revealed that both peptides form a stoichiometric 1:1 complex in the membrane phase with an association free energy of -15 kJ/mol. Single amino acid mutations in magainin 2 significantly altered the synergistic activity, suggesting that precise molecular recognition is involved in complex formation. The complex as well as each component peptide form peptide-lipid supramolecular complex pores, which mediate the mutually coupled transbilayer transport of dye, lipid, and the peptide per se. The rate of pore formation rate is in the order complex >/= PGLa > magainin 2, whereas the pore lifetime is in the order magainin 2 > complex > PGLa. A laterally shielded coplanar waveguide consisting of a coplanar waveguide of finite width placed vertically in a cutoff parallel-plate waveguide is proposed for millimeter-wave applications. Although leaky wave antennas have been studied extensively in the literature, their practical use is still limited. This work proposes a novel and unique application of leaky NRD guides as feeding systems for microwave planar antennas and shows their substantial possibilities of practical use. At first a new leaky waveguide is introduced based on a periodic array of grooves on the upper side of the dielectric strip in the NRD guide. Then, leaky waves issuing from this configuration are used to feed a slot array cut on the upper metal plate of the NRD guide. The primary aim of surge arresters in power distribution lines is to protect lines and equipment from the voltage induced by nearby lightning strokes. To further improve power systems, methods to protect distribution lines against direct lightning strokes are still needed. An effective measure against direct lightning strokes is to increase the number of arresters. However, if the surge current is too large, some surge arresters absorb energy in excess of their capability and may break; this leads to a line fault. To evaluate the protective effect of the surge arresters against direct lightning strokes to overhead ground wire, the authors measured both the voltage across the surge arresters and the energy absorbed by them using a full-scale model line and a 12 MV impulse generator. A novel class of optimized nonradiative dielectric waveguide (NRD-guide) mode suppressors are proposed for wideband applications in passive and active NRD integrated circuits. A rigorous field-theoretical analysis is made by using the frequency-domain TLM technique. The optimum design is based on a filter-like scheme with a low-pass filter simulation technique and its performance-prediction algorithm. Compared to the existing choke metallic pattern, the proposed mode suppressor demonstrates excellent capabilities of effectively suppressing unwanted modes while offering a more compact geometry. Using the geometry proposed in this work for a three-section low-pass filter, for example, it is found that the transmission loss of the mode suppressor is better than -30 dB over the frequency band of interest which is well confirmed theoretically and experimentally. In addition, the length of the resulting mode suppressor becomes shorter than its counterpart using the choke metallic pattern by 20%. The theoretical prediction of electrical performance is well confirmed by our measurements 相似文献
