Research was done to determine the possible uses of fine-grained solid gasification residues in concrete products. Due to the residues' chemical composition, compacted concrete paving blocks were studied as one viable non-structural application of adding the residue. Six different residues were tested in the laboratory at up to 25% replacement by dry weight of either cement or aggregate. After these preliminary laboratory tests, one residue was used in full-scale field tests at the Lakan Betoni factory where 10 and 15% of straw-derived residue was used as a cement replacement. Tensile strength, compressive strength, resistance to freezing-thawing cycles, absorption and leaching were evaluated. The addition of the residue improved the workability of the concrete, provided a beneficial dark coloring and did not adversely affect most properties. The freeze-thaw resistance should be improved by reducing the factory compaction effort to ensure sufficient void space.  相似文献

Primary cultures of porcine brain capillary endothelial cells grown on collagen coated polycarbonate membranes were used to build up an in vitro-model for the blood-brain barrier. Improved cultivation techniques allowed cell-storage and experiments under serum-free conditions. We employed this model to perform permeability studies in vitro with the radioactively labelled marker substances sucrose, retinoic acid, retinol, haloperidol, caffeine, and mannitol. Permeability values obtained with this blood-brain barrier model (1. 0x10-6 cm/s for sucrose, 6.2x10-6 cm/s for retinoic acid, 4.8x10-6 cm/s for retinol, 49.5x10-6 cm/s for haloperidol, 62.4x10-6 cm/s for caffeine, and 1.8x10-6 cm/s for mannitol) show a good correlation to data which are already known from in vivo-experiments. As judged by the sucrose permeability our blood-brain barrier model is less permeable than numerous other models published so far. Therefore it represents a powerful tool for in vitro-prediction of blood-brain barrier permeability of drugs and offers the possibility to scan a large quantity of drugs for their potential to enter the brain.  相似文献

Two mothers with heart valve prosthesis were treated with warfarin during pregnancy. In the first case a caesarean section was done one week after replacement of warfarin with heparin. The baby died of cerebral and pulmonary hemorrhage. The second mother had a male infant by caesarean section. The baby showed warfarin-induced embryopathy with nasal hypoplasia and stippled epiphyses (chondrodysplasia punctata). Nasal hypoplasia with or without stippled epiphyses has now been reported in 11 infants born to mothers treated with warfarin during the first trimester, and a causal association is probable. In view of the risks to both mother and fetus in women with prosthetic cardiac valves it is recommended that therapeutic abortion be advised as the first alternative.  相似文献

Upon reperfusion of ischemic tissues, reactive oxygen metabolites are generated and are responsible for much of the organ damage. Experimental studies have revealed two main sources of these metabolites: 1) the oxidation of hypoxanthine to xanthine and on to uric acid by the oxidase form of xanthine oxidoreductase and 2) neutrophils accumulating in ischemic and reperfused tissue. Blocking either source will reduce reperfusion damage in a number of experimental situations. Although xanthine oxidoreductase activity may be unmeasurably low in organs other than liver and intestine, it may be involved in reperfusion injury elsewhere because of its localization in capillary endothelial cells. Time course considerations suggest that substrate accumulation and NADH inhibition of dehydrogenase activity may be more important in the pathogenesis than conversion of xanthine dehydrogenase into the oxidase form. Neutrophil accumulation may be partly due to oxidants in the first place, suggesting a link between the two sources of reactive oxygen metabolites. In the clinical context, many of the sequelae of perinatal asphyxia may be accounted for by reperfusion damage to organs such as brain, kidney, heart, liver, and lungs. During asphyxia, substrates of xanthine oxidase accumulate, upon resuscitation the cosubstrate oxygen is introduced, and evidence for oxidant production and effects has been obtained. In the pathogenesis of brain damage after asphyxia, both microvascular injury and parenchymal cell damage are important. Oxygen metabolites are involved in the former, but in the latter process their role is less clear because ischemia-reperfusion triggers not only oxidant production but many other phenomena, including gene activation, ATP depletion, glutamate accumulation, and increase of intracellular calcium. A severe insult results in cell necrosis, but more moderate asphyxia may cause delayed neuronal death through apoptosis. The time course of the changes in high energy phosphates as well as of selective neuronal death suggest that in the first hours of life there is a "therapeutic window," with future possibilities for prevention of permanent damage.  相似文献

High somatic cell count in milk leads to reduced shelf life in fluid milk and lower processed yields in manufactured dairy products. As a result, farmers are often penalized for high bulk tank somatic cell count or paid a premium for low bulk tank somatic cell count. Many countries also require all milk from a farm to be lower than a specified regulated somatic cell count. Thus, farms often cull cows that have high somatic cell count to meet somatic cell count thresholds. Rather than naïvely cull the highest somatic cell count cows, a mathematical programming model was developed that determines the cows to be culled from the herd by maximizing the net present value of the herd, subject to meeting any specified bulk tank somatic cell count level. The model was applied to test-day cows on 2 New York State dairy farms. Results showed that the net present value of the herd was increased by using the model to meet the somatic cell count restriction compared with naïvely culling the highest somatic cell count cows. Implementation of the model would be straightforward in dairy management decision software.  相似文献
