The apparent resistance of a finite-thickness layer measured with a four-electrode plunge probe depends on the electrode insertion depth, electrode spacing, and layer thickness, as well as the resistivity ratio of an underlying layer. A physical model consisting of air, a saline solution layer, and an agar layer simulates the real situation of resistivity measurement. The saline layer represents the finite-thickness layer whose resistivity is to be measured by a plunge electrode probe, and the agar layer represents an underlying perturbing layer. A micropositioner controls the insertion depth of the four electrodes into the saline solution. With the apparent resistance measured on a semi-infinite-thickness layer of saline solution as standard, measurement results show decreasing apparent resistance and increasing error with increasing electrode insertion depth. This information is important for correct measurement of myocardial resistivity in vivo and in vitro. 相似文献

Electrical impedance plethysmography has been evaluated for early detection of peripheral atherosclerosis. A pressure cuff was wrapped around the lower leg and the cuff pressure increased. Two circumferential electrodes glued in the middle of the cuff recorded the impedance pulse, from which the arterial pulse volume was calculated. The ratio of maximal arterial volume change to the pulse pressure was determined as a measure of maximal compliance Cp. Based on the data from 118 human subjects, Cp was found to correlate well with known cardiovascular risk factors. For example, Cp decreased on the average from 3.08 to 1.92 microL.mm Hg-1.cm-1 (1 microL.mm Hg-1.cm-1 = 7.5 x 10(-10) m4.N-1) in groups of subjects of increasing age from 22 to 70 years. Subjects on a regular exercise program had an average value of 3.86, while those with proven peripheral vascular disease had a value of 0.70. In a related pathologic validation study on 15 monkeys fed a cholesterol-control diet a good correlation was found between the limb peak compliance and morphometric data obtained from iliac and carotid arteries. 相似文献

In electrical impedance tomography (EIT), the measured voltages are sensitive to electrode-skin contact impedance because the contact impedance and the current density through it are both high. Large electrodes were used to provide a more uniform current distribution and reduce the contact impedance. A large electrode differs from a point electrode in that it has shunting and edge effects that cannot be modeled by a single resistor. The finite-element method (FEM) was used to study the electric field distributions underneath an electrode, and three models were developed: a FEM model, a simplified FEM model, and a weighted load model. The FEM models considered both shunting and edge effects and closely matched the experimental measurements. Neu (c-erbB2) is a proto-oncogene product that encodes an epidermal growth factor-like receptor tyrosine kinase. Amplification of wild-type c-Neu and mutational activation of Neu (Neu T) have been implicated in oncogenic transformation of cultured fibroblasts and mammary tumorigenesis in vivo. Here, we examine the relationship between Neu tyrosine kinase activity and caveolin-1 protein expression in vitro and in vivo. Recent studies have suggested that caveolins may function as negative regulators of signal transduction. Our current results show that mutational activation of c-Neu down-regulates caveolin-1 protein expression, but not caveolin-2, in cultured NIH 3T3 and Rat 1 cells. Conversely, recombinant overexpression of caveolin-1 blocks Neu-mediated signal transduction in vivo. These results suggest a reciprocal relationship between c-Neu tyrosine kinase activity and caveolin-1 protein expression. We next analyzed a variety of caveolin-1 deletion mutants to map this caveolin-1-dependent inhibitory activity to a given region of the caveolin-1 molecule. Results from this mutational analysis show that this functional in vivo inhibitory activity is contained within caveolin-1 residues 32-95. In accordance with these in vivo studies, a 20-amino acid peptide derived from this region (the caveolin-1 scaffolding domain) was sufficient to inhibit Neu autophosphorylation in an in vitro kinase assay. To further confirm or refute the relevance of our findings in vivo, we next examined the expression levels of caveolin-1 in mammary tumors derived from c-Neu transgenic mice. Our results indicate that dramatic reduction of caveolin-1 expression occurs in mammary tumors derived from c-Neu-expressing transgenic mice and other transgenic mice expressing downstream effectors of Neu-mediated signal transduction, such as Src and Ras. To study female choice of mating partners in montane voles, a male was tethered at each end of an elongate chamber, and an estrous female was allowed to move betweeen the 2 males and a neutral area. In Exp I, using 16 females and 32 males, females with a choice of 2 gonadally intact males copulated preferentially with 1 of them. Preferred males were more effective than nonpreferred males at gaining intromission and had more thrusts per intromission. In Exp II, with 10 females, 10 castrated males, and 10 sham-operated males, females spent more time with and mated preferentially with intact rather than castrated males. It is therefore suggested that the opportunity to copulate is reinforcing for female voles and that they display distinct preferences, correlated with copulatory stimulation, for some partners.
