Allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell transplantation in 30 patients with hematologic disorders

Thirty patients (median age of 32 years; range, 6-61) with hematologic disorders received unmanipulated peripheral blood stem cell transplants from HLA-matched or one-antigen-mismatched related donors following myeloablative therapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (7), acute myelogenous leukemia (6), chronic myelogenous leukemia (8), myelodysplastic syndrome (3), or other disorders (6). Granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) mobilized peripheral blood stem cells were collected from donors in 1 to 3 aphereses. The apheresis products contained mean counts of 11.3 x 10(8) (range, 3.8-17.2) nucleated cells/kg and 6.7 x 10(6) (range, 1.3-16.7) CD34+ cells/kg. Graft-versus-host-disease (GVHD) prophylaxis consisted of cyclosporin A plus methotrexate, or FK506 plus methotrexate. All patients received G-CSF following their transplant. Although 1 patient died of pneumonia 6 days after transplantation, the others demonstrated rapid engraftment. Median days to recovery to 500/microliter neutrophils and 20,000/microliter platelets were 13 (range, 8-21) and 14 (range, 1-23) days, respectively. The incidence of acute GVHD grade II-IV was 33%; chronic GVHD developed in 57% of the assessable patients. There were no episodes of graft failure or rejection. Nineteen patients (63%) were alive and in complete remission from 147 to 839 days following their transplant (median follow-up of 560 days). Further follow-up study will be required to assess the incidence of chronic GVHD and graft-versus-leukemia (GVL) effects.     

Identification and field evaluation ofAnomala octiescostata (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) sex pheromone

Using GC-EAD, the sex pheromone of the scarab beetleAnomala octiescostata was identified to be a 8:2 binary mixture of (R,Z)-5-(–)-(oct-1-enyl)oxacyclopentan-2-one and (R,Z)-5-(–)-(dec-1-enyl)oxacyclopentan-2-one. These semiochemicals have been also reported as sex pheromone constituents of otherAnomala species, either geographically or seasonally isolated fromA. octiescostata. Synthetic sex pheromone was highly attractive in the field; 0.1 mg captured significantly more males than two virgin females. Buried traps were significantly more attractive than those positioned at 30, 90, and 150 cm above the ground. In a dose-response test (0.1–100 mg), no saturation due to overdose of pheromone was observed, but in most cases, two dosages differing by 10-fold were not significantly different. Response of males to traps baited with different ratios of the two components was tested in two experiments with randomized blocks and Latin-square designs. Deviation from the natural ratio (8:2) of sex pheromone did not significantly diminish the response of males. Peak flight activity of beetle was recorded at 9:00–10:00 AM JST on sunny days in the end of April 1993.Presented in part at the 10th Annual ISCE Meeting, July 31–August 4, 1993, Clearwater Beach, Florida.     

Analysis and synthesis of tapered microstrip transmission lines

The input voltage reflection coefficient on a tapered microstrip transmission line is analyzed and a new Fourier transform pair is derived which introduces echo time and frequency as variables. Calculations of the input reflection coefficient take into account the frequency dispersion-characteristics of the effective permittivity. An efficient method is proposed for analysis and synthesis of microstrip tapers and numerical results are presented for microstrip exponential tapers and microstrip Chebyshev tapers     

Natural circulation characteristics of a marine reactor in rolling motion and heat transfer in the core

A series of single-phase natural circulation tests in a model reactor with rolling motion was performed in order to investigate effects of the rolling motion on its thermal-hydraulic behavior. The loop flow rate in each leg changes cyclically with the rolling angle due to the inertial force of the rolling motion. As the rolling period becomes shorter, the amplitude of the loop flow rate oscillations becomes larger, and the phase lag between the rolling angle and loop flow rate oscillations becomes larger. On the other hand, the core flow rate does not oscillate, though its value changes with the rolling period. Its change correlates well with both the Reynolds number for rolling motion and the Rayleigh number, and it is considered to be caused by the change of the thermal driving head and the pressure loss through the loop. In order to simulate core flow rate change with the rolling period, a simple one-dimensional analytical model was proposed, and its verification was demonstrated. Heat transfer in the core is enhanced by the rolling motion and the enhancement is thought to be caused by the internal flow due to the rolling motion. Heat transfer coefficient in the core is well correlated with the Richardson number for rolling motion and is classified into three regimes.     

Complete appendiceal intussusception induced by primary appendiceal adenocarcinoma in tubular adenoma: a case report

A case of complete intussusception induced by appendiceal carcinoma is reported. The patient was a 49-year-old man complaining of rectal bleeding. Barium enema and colonoscopy revealed a cecal polyp; it was interpreted as an inverted appendix with a tumor. Computed tomography showed an invaginated appendix into the cecal cavity. During surgery, the appendix was found to be inverted completely into the cecum; ileocecal resection with regional lymph node dissection was performed. Microscopic examination revealed well-differentiated adenocarcinoma in tubular adenoma. Diagnosis of intussusception with carcinoma of the appendix is often difficult because appendiceal carcinoma with intussusception of the appendix is a rare condition. Although this condition can be diagnosed by radiographic imaging or colonoscopy, computed tomography has also been useful. The clinical manifestation of appendiceal intussusception with primary appendiceal tumor resembles a large cecal polyp, but its treatment differs greatly. Failure to recognize this condition may result in unexpected complications such as consequent peritonitis in case of endoscopic removal.     

12.5-gb/s direct Modulation up to 115/spl deg/C in 1.3-/spl mu/m InGaAlAs-MQW RWG DFB lasers with notch-free grating structure

Direct modulation at 12.5 Gb/s of 1.3-/spl mu/m InGaAlAs distributed feedback (DFB) ridge waveguide (RWG) lasers with low-resistance notch-free gratings running up to 115/spl deg/C is experimentally demonstrated. It was achieved by the combination of the high differential gain of an InGaAlAs MQW active layer, high characteristic temperature of RWG structure, and low-resistance notch-free grating. Moreover, successful transmission of 10-Gb/s modulated signals over 30-km standard single-mode fiber was achieved with the laser running at up to 115/spl deg/C. These results confirm the suitability of this type of laser for use as the cost-effective light source in 12.5-Gb/s and 10-Gb/s datacom applications.     

Numerical assessment of the seismic response of an earth embankment on liquefiable soils

This study presents a numerical assessment of the seismic behaviour of an earth embankment founded on liquefiable foundation soils during earthquake loading. Analysis was carried out using an effective stress-based, fully coupled, finite element method. The behaviour of the sandy soil is described by means of a cyclic elastoplastic constitutive model which was developed within the framework of the Armstrong–Frederick type non-linear kinematic hardening concept. The numerical method and the analysis procedure are briefly outlined and as an example, the seismic response of an earth embankment on a saturated sand foundation is assessed. Based on the numerical results, the distinctive patterns of seismic response of the embankment are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the computed results of excess pore water pressures, co-seismic and post-seismic deformations, and accelerations during the seismic excitation. It has been found that the numerical model can capture fundamental liquefaction aspects of the embankment foundation system and produce preliminary results for its seismic assessment.
