Certifying advanced ceramics on the basis of mechanical properties

The authors propose a scientifically justified system of certifying the mechanical properties of ceramics, propose procedural approaches to evaluating these properties, describe a set of procedures and equipment for certifying ceramics, and also analyze the effect of test errors on the reliability of the data obtained for different certification stages.Translated from Problemy Prochnosti, No. 1, pp. 68–75, January, 1994.     

Resonance phenomena of π-mode forming in multi-element gratings

An analysis of resonances of scattering from multi-element grating formed by a finite number of resonant elements is presented. It has been shown that gratings with three and more elements on its period can support the π-mode. The π-mode of a grating is characterized by the existence of the regions in the vicinity of the grating and along its period where the electromagnetic field has opposite phases. The existence and excitation of the π-mode in finite gratings with resonant cells formed by several scatterers having open cavities have been studied. The particular case of the grating with cells formed by three identical slotted cylinders has been considered in detail. An application of gratings which support the π-mode in electron-vacuum oscillators of millimeter waves for efficient deceleration of electrons and extracting energy from electron beam is discussed.     

Mechanical behavior of ceramics not following Hooke's law

Conclusions The new characteristics of mechanical behavior, i.e., the degree of brittleness and the comparative brittleness, proposed previously by the author can be used efficiently in analysis of the results of strength tests on ceramics and other low-formability materials during mechanical and thermal loading.From the group of the low-formability materials it is convenient to separate the relatively brittle materials (materials not following Hooke's law) whose mechanical behavior differs greatly not only from the ductile but also brittle materials (materials which follow Hooke's law).
