One has a large workload that is “divisible”—its constituent work’s granularity can be adjusted arbitrarily—and one has access to p remote worker computers that can assist in computing the workload. How can one best utilize the workers? Complicating this question is the fact that each worker is subject to interruptions (of known likelihood) that kill all work in progress on it. One wishes to orchestrate sharing the workload with the workers in a way that maximizes the expected amount of work completed. Strategies are presented for achieving this goal, by balancing the desire to checkpoint often—thereby decreasing the amount of vulnerable work at any point—vs. the desire to avoid the context-switching required to checkpoint. Schedules must also temper the desire to replicate work, because such replication diminishes the effective remote workforce. The current study demonstrates the accessibility of strategies that provably maximize the expected amount of work when there is only one worker (the case p=1) and, at least in an asymptotic sense, when there are two workers (the case p=2); but the study strongly suggests the intractability of exact maximization for p≥2 computers, as work replication on multiple workers joins checkpointing as a vehicle for decreasing the impact of work-killing interruptions. We respond to that challenge by developing efficient heuristics that employ both checkpointing and work replication as mechanisms for decreasing the impact of work-killing interruptions. The quality of these heuristics, in expected amount of work completed, is assessed through exhaustive simulations that use both idealized models and actual trace data.  相似文献

In this article, the authors study the factorial structure of 2 versions (64 items and 32 items) of the Dutch translation of the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (IIP; L. M. Horowitz, L. E. Alden, J. S. Wiggins, & A. L. Pincus, 2000) in both a clinical sample (n = 382) and a student sample (n = 287). First, the authors test whether both inventories are constituted by correlated uni-dimensional subscales, and they conclude that this is true only for the short version. Second, the authors study whether the correlations between the subscales follow a circumplex pattern. This proves to be true for both versions. Raman and resonance Raman spectra of plasma lipoproteins ± malondialdehyde were studied at concentrations which block the normal receptor-mediated uptake by cells. The strong resonance Raman bands at about 1010, 1162 and 1530 cm−1, due to the presence of carotenoids in the lipoproteins, are envisaged as structural probes. High resolution resonance Raman spectra of the 1500–1600 cm−1 region reveal multiple features suggesting the coexistence of several structural populations of β-carotene whose precise assignment is complex. When plasma lipoproteins are reacted with malondialdehyde, a complex change occurs in the resonance Raman banding of β-carotene in the 1500–1600 cm−1 region. Malonaldehyde (MDA) also modifies the acoustical region (70–200 cm−1 of low density lipoprotein (LDL) lipids. We suggest that malondialdehyde association with plasma lipoproteins alters the lipid structure via apoprotein or apoprotein/lipid associations.  相似文献

A new approach for the source quantification has been developed on the basis of real air pollutant hourly concentrations of SO2, measured by three monitoring stations, during 9 h, around a group of three industrial sources. This inverse problem has been solved by coupling a direct model of diffusion (Pasquill’s Gaussian model) with a genetic algorithm, to search solutions leading to a minimum error between model outputs and measurements. The inversion performance depends on the relationship between the wind field and the configuration sources–receptors: good results are obtained when the monitoring stations are downwind from the sources, and in these cases, the order of magnitude of emissions is retrieved, sometimes with less than 10% error for at least two sources; there are some configurations (wind direction versus source and receptor locations) which do not permit to restore emissions. The latter situations reveal the need to conceive a specific network of sensors, taking into account the source locations and the most frequent weather patterns.  相似文献

Heating oilseeds has been shown to improve the milk fatty acid profile when given to dairy cows, compared to raw oilseeds. However, results from published studies are conflicting. The conditions of heating and storage of the oilseeds could be responsible for these differences, probably partly through their effects on lipid oxidation, the products of which could act on ruminal biohydrogenation (BH). Thus, 15 different treatments were applied to ground soybeans: three levels of heating (no heating, 30 min at 110 or 150°C) × 5 ambient storage durations (0, 1, 2, 4, or 6 months). Soybeans were incubated in vitro with ruminal fluid for 6 h. Triacylglycerol (TAG) polymers, hydroperoxides and hydroxyacids (HOA), aldehydes, and fatty acids were assayed in soybeans and ruminal culture. No TAG polymer was detected in any treatment. Soybeans stored for a long time had a high content of HOA, whereas those heated at 150°C, whatever the storage duration, had high aldehyde contents. The percentage disappearance of cis‐9,cis‐12 18:2 and cis‐9,cis‐12,cis‐15 18:3 in incubates decreased significantly in cultures with heated soybeans, especially at 150°C, suggesting that this partial protection of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) from BH was at least in part linked to the aldehyde content of the heated soybeans. Practical applications: Oilseeds given to ruminants are often heated, and heat treatment is known to generate oxidation products. Knowing what oxidation products influence ruminal biohydrogenation of unsaturated fatty acids could result in technological processes allowing a better transfer of unsaturated fatty acids from oilseeds to ruminant products.  相似文献

Association rule extraction from operational datasets often produces several tens of thousands, and even millions, of association rules. Moreover, many of these rules are redundant and thus useless. Using a semantic based on the closure of the Galois connection, we define a condensed representation for association rules. This representation is characterized by frequent closed itemsets and their generators. It contains the non-redundant association rules having minimal antecedent and maximal consequent, called min-max association rules. We think that these rules are the most relevant since they are the most general non-redundant association rules. Furthermore, this representation is a basis, i.e., a generating set for all association rules, their supports and their confidences, and all of them can be retrieved needless accessing the data. We introduce algorithms for extracting this basis and for reconstructing all association rules. Results of experiments carried out on real datasets show the usefulness of this approach. In order to generate this basis when an algorithm for extracting frequent itemsets—such as Apriori for instance—is used, we also present an algorithm for deriving frequent closed itemsets and their generators from frequent itemsets without using the dataset.  相似文献

Doppler broadening of annihilation gamma-line combined with a slow positron beam was used to measure the momentum density distribution of annihilating pair in a set of sintered UO2 samples. The influence of surface polishing, of implantation with 800-keV 136Xe2+ at fluences of 1 × 1015 and 1 × 1016 Xe cm?2, and of annealing were studied by following the changes of the momentum distribution shape by means of S and W parameters. The program used for this purpose was VEPFIT. At the two fluences in the stoichiometric as-implanted UO2, formation of Xe bubbles was not detected. The post-implantation annealing and over-stoichiometry in the as-implanted sample caused Xe precipitation and formation of Xe bubbles.  相似文献

This paper reviews the evolution of bioretention systems, a promising at-source storm-water best management practice. The introduction of bioretention systems in the 1990s by Prince George’s County, Md. is examined along with the motivations behind the development of the systems. A summary of the research findings on the performance of bioretention systems is provided including proposed design modifications to improve the field performance. Also included is an overview of past and current bioretention design guidelines in North America, as well as a discussion of issues surrounding the public adoption and implementation of bioretention systems. Potential alternative uses for the systems are highlighted and a review of bioretention modeling work is provided. Finally, the paper outlines research needs and anticipated future work necessary to bring about the widespread use of bioretention systems.  相似文献

The degradation of the mechanical properties of deformed PVDF during its mechanochemical ageing in sodium hydroxide (soda) was followed by microindentation measurements, especially the local reduction of the elastic modulus and the hardness. This allows measurements on a local scale of the mechanical properties on the surface and in-depth as a function of the strain level and the ageing time. Microindentation tests with Berkovich indenter have been performed with a Nanoindenter XP® (MTS). Measurements are made at penetration depth less than 2 μm for an applied load of 10 mN. During ageing in soda (Ph 14) at 90 °C up to 16 days, various deformations ε (0, 22 and 38%) are imposed on PVDF tensile specimen. For the first two imposed deformations (ε = 0 and ε = 22%), mechanical degradation is limited to some percent (less than 7%). For the greatest deformation (ε = 38%), mechanical degradation continues to decrease with ageing time (more than 21%). Microindentation tests show that a range of low deformations exists in which the mechanochemical degradation is limited and no limitation is observed for larger imposed deformation.  相似文献
