The development and creating of new-generation full-scope simulator and new technology of simulation

Set out is a brief account of the two major accomplishments by the Russian Research Center ‘Kurchatov Institute’ in creating the full-scope simulators and mathematical modeling technologies. Presented are the basic specifications of one of the world's largest simulators—the full-scope simulator for the Leningrad NPP which is the new-generation one. Owing to the extended modeling scope accomplished is the possibility of training personnel to act in terms of not only the design-basis but rather beyond the design-basis accidents. To minimize the expenditures for creating the simulators, analyzers and other modeling and control means, the RRC ‘Kurchatov Institute' has created the unique technology of mathmodeling automation. Thanks to its versatility and application at its creation of the ELUD philosophy (easy to learn, use and develop) good use is made of this technology both in nuclear and thermal power engineering, as well as in gas industry.     

Phase composition and structure of composite powders based on solid solutions of SiC and AlN

The structure of SiC–AlN powders is investigated by x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy methods. The powders were produced by joint carbon reduction and nitriding of silicon and aluminum oxide mixtures. The results show that a mixture of solid solutions forms during joint SiC and AlN synthesis at 1700°C, with SiC forming β (3C) and α (2H) modifications with different grain morphology. The fiber form is characteristic of β-SiC, whereas the grains of the solid solution based on SiC have a predominantly equiaxed form. α-SiC grain dimensions are considerablys smaller than those of AlN. Synovial cyst and degeneration of the transverse ligament: an unusual cause of high cervical myelopathy. Case report

A case of cystic degeneration of the transverse ligament located posteriorly to the dens and causing compression to the lower medulla and upper cervical spinal cord is reported. The clinical, pathological, and radiological findings are described and compared to the literature to characterize this syndrome more fully. The advantages of a posterolateral surgical approach are stressed.     

Application of gene gun for local-regional cancer

We studied the in vivo gene transfusion using a gene gun, formerly used in plants and culture cells. The hand-held type gene gun (Helios Gene Gun System) is simple and convenient for effective gene transfection in living animals. This method has some advantages in that there is no need for use of viral vector, independence on the cell cycle and local inducement of plural genes. There is a great possibility for application to local-regional cancer.     

Effect of n-3 fatty acids on VLDL production by hepatocytes is mediated through prostaglandins

The mechanism of the hypolipidemic effect of n-3 fatty acids was studied using isolated rat hepatocytes maintained in culture. EPA and DHA caused a significant reduction in the incorporation of 3[H]-leucine into apoB associated with the VLDL produced by hepatocytes in culture when compared to that in presence of palmitic acid. Presence of indomethacin, an inhibitor of cyclo-oxygenase reversed the effect of EPA on VLDL synthesis while diethyl carbamazine an inhibitor of lipoxygenase did not show any effect suggesting that the effect of EPA may be mediated through prostaglandins. This was further tested by invivo experiments where animals were fed fish oil containing diet with and without aspirin, which inhibits formation of prostaglandins. The incorporation of 3[H]-leucine into apo B and 14[C]-acetate into cholesterol of VLDL produced by hepatocytes from aspirin treated animals were significantly high. The reversal of the effect of n-3 fatty acids by agents which inhibit the formation of prostaglandin suggests that the n-3 fatty acids may exert their effect on VLDL production by liver cells through prostaglandins.     

Wooden sticks as the source of a pseudoepidemic of infection with Rhizopus microsporus var. rhizopodiformis among immunocompromised patients

Wooden sticks used to suspend feces obtained for surveillance cultures were found to be the source of Rhizopus microsporus var. rhizopodiformis causing a pseudo-outbreak among 17 immunocompromised patients cared for in three different wards. Nonsterile wooden products should therefore not be used for collecting, handling, and processing specimens for microbiological examination.     

Helicase delivery and activation by DnaA and TrfA proteins during the initiation of replication of the broad host range plasmid RK2

Specific binding of the plasmid-encoded protein, TrfA, and the Escherichia coli DnaA protein to the origin region (oriV) is required for the initiation of replication of the broad host range plasmid RK2. It has been shown that the DnaA protein which binds to DnaA boxes upstream of the TrfA-binding sites (iterons) cannot by itself form an open complex, but it enhances the formation of the open complex by TrfA (Konieczny, I., Doran, K. S., Helinski, D. R., Blasina, A. (1997) J. Biol. Chem. 272, 20173). In this study an in vitro replication system is reconstituted from purified TrfA protein and E. coli proteins. With this system, a specific interaction between the DnaA and DnaB proteins is required for delivery of the helicase to the RK2 origin region. Although the DnaA protein directs the DnaB-DnaC complex to the plasmid replication origin, it cannot by itself activate the helicase. Both DnaA and TrfA proteins are required for DnaB-induced template unwinding. We propose that specific changes in the nucleoprotein structure mediated by TrfA result in a repositioning of the DnaB helicase within the open origin region and an activation of the DnaB protein for template unwinding.     

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae bacteremia after dog bite

A case of erysipeloid with bacteraemia caused by Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae (ER) in a previously healthy 41-year old man is presented. The bacterium was probably introduced by the bite of a dog. He was treated successfully with penicillin V. The ER bacteraemia occurred without complications of endocarditis.     

Modulation characteristic of waveguide-type optical frequency combgenerator

We report the modulation characteristics of a waveguide-type optical frequency comb generator (WG-OFCG) with the advantages of compactness, high modulation index and low driving power. The characteristics of the optical frequency comb (OFC) generated when the modulation index exceeds 2π are discussed. The power of the modulation sidebands was measured by the optical heterodyne method with an external-cavity laser as a local oscillator. The dependence of the modulation index of the WG-OFCG on the modulation frequency up to 40 GHz was measured. The generation span of the OFC at the modulation frequency detuned from an integer multiple of the free spectral range (FSR) is discussed
