The current study presents a numerical computation of combined gas radiation and forced convection through two parallel plates. A laminar flow of a temperature-dependent and non-grey gas in the entrance region of the channel was investigated. Over-heated water vapor was chosen as a gas because of its large absorption bands. Some special attention was given to entropy generation and its dependence on geometrical and thermodynamic parameters. The radiative part of the study was solved using the “Ray Tracing” method through S4 directions, associated with the “statistical narrow band correlated-k” (SNBCK) model. Desiccants can be used in conjunction with solar energy to provide a viable alternative to traditional air conditioning techniques. A desiccant consisting of clay and calcium chloride was developed and tested using multiple sorption and desorption cycles. During sorption, inlet air temperatures from 23 to 36 °C with corresponding relative humidities of 42-66% were tested. Additionally, superficial air velocities from 0.17 to 0.85 m/s were tested. During desorption, inlet air temperatures from 50 to 57 °C and superficial air velocities of approximately 0.30 and 0.60 m/s were tested. A regression equation was determined for the mass of water sorbed by the clay-CaCl2 desiccant with a R2 value of 0.917. The desorption data was regressed to an exponential function and significant k-values were determined. An equation for pressure drop through the desiccant was determined and compared to existing models. The desiccant was found to perform well during the repeated test cycles though small masses of desiccant were lost due to surface disintegration of the desiccant spheres. 相似文献

Human neurocysticercosis, due to infection of the central nervous system by cysticerci of Taenia solium, is a severe form of neurologic disease occurring in Central and South America. Specific proteins from scolex antigen from cysticerci were purified by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and electroelution and recognized in Western blots by antibodies present in sera from patients with neurocysticercosis. The proteins appeared as 13-, 17-, and 26-kDa bands on Coomassie blue-stained gels and proved to be specific to cysticerci of T. solium. No cross-reactivity with sera from patients with taeniasis or hydatidosis was observed. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay using the purified proteins of 13, 17, and 26 kDa demonstrated rates of 53%, 88%, and 100% specificity, respectively, at the cutoff serum dilution of 1:32 for the specific immunodiagnosis of human neurocysticercosis. 相似文献

Two more organisms from different taxonomic groups were added to a new version of the Integrated Sequence-Structure Database (ISSD). ISSD serves as an integrated source of sequence and structure information for the analysis of correlations between mRNA synonymous codon usage and three-dimensional structure of the encoded proteins. ISSD now holds 88 non-homologous Escherichia coli proteins and 25 yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae proteins in addition to the expanded set of mammalian proteins, which includes 166 proteins (107 in ISSD Version 1.0). Comparison of ISSD sequences with organism-specific codon usage data derived from CUTG database shows that it is a representative subset of the GenBank coding sequences data. Preliminary results of the statistical analysis confirm that sequence-structure correlations observed by us earlier are also present in the upgraded ISSD (Version 2.0), including bacterial and yeast proteins. Hydrogen is considered as the most promising energy carrier for providing a clean, reliable and sustainable energy system. It can be produced from a diverse array of potential feed stocks including water, fossil fuels and organic matter. Electrolysis is the best option for producing hydrogen very quickly and conveniently. Water electrolysis as a source of hydrogen production has recently gained much attention since it can produce high purity hydrogen and can be compatible with renewable energies. Besides the water electrolysis, aqueous methanol electrolysis has been reported in several studies. The aqueous methanol electrolysis proceeds at much lower voltage than that with the water electrolysis. As a result of the substantially lower operating voltage, the energy efficiency for methanol electrolysis can be higher than that for water electrolysis. In this paper, we are interesting to methanol electrolysis in order to produce hydrogen. The relation linking hydrogen production rate to the power needed to electrolyse a unit volume of aqueous methanol solution has been determined. Using this relation, the potential of hydrogen from aqueous methanol solution using a PV solar as the energy system has been evaluated for different locations in Algeria. 相似文献

Novel temperature-sensitive liposomes having surface properties that can be controlled by temperature were designed as liposomes coated with poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), which exhibits a hydrated coil to dehydrated globule transition at ca. 32 degrees C. To obtain the polymer with anchoring groups to the liposome, a copolymer of N-isopropylacrylamide and octadecyl acrylate (99:1, mol/mol) was synthesized by radical copolymerization. The copolymer revealed the transition near 30 degrees C. Liposomes made from various phospholipids were prepared by sonication and coated with the copolymer. When dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine and distearoylphosphatidylcholine were used as liposome lipids, remarkable aggregation and fusion of the copolymer-modified liposomes took place between the transition temperature of the copolymer and the gel-liquid-crystalline transition temperature (Tc) of the lipid membranes. However, above the Tc, association between the liposomes was much less significant, although the copolymer is still hydrophobic. In the case of the copolymer-modified dilauroylphosphatidylcholine liposome, the membrane of which takes on a liquid-crystalline state under the experimental conditions, association between the liposomes also hardly occurred even when the copolymer became hydrophobic. On the other hand, below the transition temperature of the copolymer, the copolymer-modified liposomes were very stable and aggregation of the liposomes was not observed, irrespective of membrane lipid. Results obtained in this study demonstrate that the copolymer chains fixed on the surface of the liposome with a solid membrane promote aggregation and fusion of the liposomes by hydrophobic interactions between the copolymer chains and/or between the copolymer chains and the liposome membranes above the transition temperature of the copolymer. 相似文献

To investigate whether statistical parameters used in Down syndrome screening between 15 and 22 weeks of pregnancy can be used at 14 weeks, we assayed alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), unconjugated oestriol (uE3), total human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG), free alpha-hCG, free beta-hCG, and inhibin-A in 16 pregnancies with Down syndrome in the 14th week of pregnancy and expressed values in multiples of the normal median. The median and standard deviation values for these 16 pregnancies were not materially different from those published for 15-22 weeks. It is reasonable, therefore, to offer Down syndrome screening using these markers starting at 14 completed weeks of pregnancy instead of 15 weeks. It needs to be recognized, however, that serum AFP measurement for neural tube defect screening is less effective at this time than between 16 and 18 weeks of pregnancy. 相似文献

Cerebral white matter lesions and spinal cord atrophy have been frequently reported in patients with HTLV-I associated myelopathy (HAM). The exact frequency and the clinical relevance of these findings still remain to be elucidated. Twenty-nine patients with HAM were studied by magnetic resonance imaging of the brain and spine. Cerebral white matter lesions equal or over 3 mm in diameter were considered abnormal. The spinal cord size was evaluated using an index we have called "spinal cord index". The radiological findings were correlated to the clinical features of the myelopathy. Cerebral white matter lesions occurred in 52% of the patients, and spinal cord atrophy in 74%. There was no significant correlation between these abnormalities and the clinical features studied. These findings suggest that the resonance imaging is a useful method for detection of cerebral and spinal cord abnormalities in HAM patients. The absence of correlation between cerebral white matter lesions and either patient age or risk factors for cardiovascular disease suggests a possible association between the leukoencephalopathy and the infection. 相似文献

Mouse hepatitis virus binds to the N-terminal domain of its receptor, MHVR, a murine biliary glycoprotein with four immunoglobulin-like domains (G.S. Dveksler, M. N. Pensiero, C. W. Dieffenbach, C. B. Cardellichio, A.A. Basile, P.E. Elia, and K. V. Holmes, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 90:1716-1720, 1993). A recombinant protein with only the anchored N-terminal domain was not a functional receptor, but a recombinant protein with the N-terminal domain of MHVR linked to the second and third immunoglobulin-like domains and anchor from the mouse poliovirus receptor homolog, mph, was a functional receptor for mouse hepatitis virus. The native four-domain MHVR has 16 potential N-linked glycosylation sites, including three on the N-terminal domain. Recombinant proteins lacking each one of these three sites or all three of them were functional receptors. Thus, glycosylation of the N-terminal domain is not required, but a glycoprotein longer than the N-terminal domain is required for virus receptor activity. 相似文献
