Development of a heart monitoring system with high-Tc DC-SQUID gradiometers

We investigated different types of high-T_c DC-SQUID gradiometers with the aim to develop an one-channel heart monitoring system for non-invasive measurements in unshielded environment. This system could be used to obtain information about the patients condition in serial examinations and in emergency cases fast and stable. Step-edge and bicrystal Josephson junctions were used to prepare planar galvanically coupled thin film gradiometers and magnetometers. These sensors were used to carry out measurements in well-shielded and non-shielded environment and we compared the different noise properties and field gradient resolutions. With different types and sizes of high-T_c DC-SQUID sensors magnetocardiograms were measured in a magnetically shielded room. The influence of antenna configurations, SQUID parameters, and cooling conditions on the measurement of magnetocardiograms will be discussed. We investigated possibilities to suppress the earth magnetic field (with pairs of Helmholtz coils) and for noise field compensation in unshielded environment.     

Rapid thermal chemical vapor deposition of in-situ boron doped polycrystalline SIxGe1-x

In-situ doped polycrystalline Si_xGe_1-x (x = 0.7) alloys were deposited by rapid thermal chemical vapor deposition (RTCVD) using the reactive gases SiH₂Cl₂, GeH₄ and B₂H₆ in a H₂ carrier gas. The depositions were performed at a total pressure of 4.0 Torr and at temperatures 600° C, 650° C and 700° C and different B₂H₆ flow rates. The conditions were chosen to achieve high doping levels in the deposited films. Our results indicate negligible effect of B₂H₆ flow on the deposition rate. The depositions follow an Arrhenius type behavior with an activation energy of 25 kcal/mole. Boron incorporation in the films was found to follow a simple kinetic model with higher boron levels at lower deposition rates and higher B₂H₆ flow rates. As-deposited resistivities as low as 2 mΩ-cm were obtained. Rapid thermal annealing (RTA) in the temperature range 800-1000° C was found to reduce the resistivity only marginally due to the high levels of boron activation achieved during the deposition process. The results indicate that polycrystalline Si_xGe_1-x films can be deposited by RTCVD with resistivities comparable to those reported for in-situ doped polysilicon.     

Vergleich der Extrakte und des Lignins aus frischem und gelagertem Kiefernholz (Pinus sylvestris L.)

The degradation processes of the extractives of pine wood caused by aging are only noticeable in the heartwood. In seasoned sapwood the percentages of the water extracts and the cyclohexane-ethanol extract increase compared with the green sample; the alkali extracts, however, do not vary. The contents of acid lignin as well as the UV and IR spectra of MWL do not show differences. The amount of OCH₃/C₉ is in all samples 0.96, but the degree of oxidation is higher in the seasoned wood than in the green one.     

Characterization of a lectin-like protein isolated from Lachesis muta snake venom

A lectin-like protein was isolated from L. muta venom by gel filtration on BIO Gel P-100 followed by column Chromatography on DEAE-sephades A-50. The protein eluted at 0.4 M Nacl in 0.01 Tris pH 7.3 and exhibited agglutinin activity toward 0+ human erythrocytes. The protein is a dimer with Mr 28 kDa. Amino acid analysis revealed high content of tryptophan and acid recidues and low content of cysteine and methionine residues. No neutral carbohydrates and sialic acid were detected. Circular dichroic spectrum shows 78% of B structure and 1% of alpha structure. In vitro experiments with erythrocytes from rat, rabbit and dog revealed strong agglutination while red blood cells from mice, sheep and goat were not agglutinated. In vivo experiments using anesthetized rats, a sharp and prolonged fall in the blood pressure was observed at protein dose of 1.5 mg/kg. Double dose of protein caused the death of the animal.     

Computer-aided design in mechanisms

The man-machine dialog is very important for the design process. In this paper a program system, based on the minicomputer KRS 4201 (ROBOTRON), is demonstrated by using an interactive graphical screen. This program system provides the opportunity to analyze and synthesize mechanisms up to 16 links. The application is demonstrated by designing a front-loader-system for a truck. Real-time animation of seven-bar linkages and coupler curves, including velocity and acceleration, are shown.     

High temperature ferroelastic phase in LiKSO4 crystals

Optical studies of LiKSO₄ crystals were performed in polarized 11yh.t within the temperature range from 300 up to 1000 K. The observations confirmed the existence of two phase transitions at about 700 and 940 K respectively. The high-temperature phase between 700 and 940 K was found to be ferroelastic.     

The multicultural perspective in therapy: A social constructionist approach.

Discusses the theoretical and clinical applications of the postmodern paradigm of social constructionism as a basis for counseling culturally different clients. Such applications avoid the trap of perpetuating the status-quo when working with minority and marginalized clientele. The main points of multiculturalism and social constructionism are summarized, and issues of mutual concern to both perspectives are examined. Applications to psychotherapy are explored, and the challenges of applying the social constructionist approach to culturally competent counseling are discussed. Study of isolated apparent amniogenic limb deficiency in Hungary, 1975-1984

Rat brain cortex slices and synaptosomes preincubated with [3H]noradrenaline were used to investigate whether the NMDA-evoked noradrenaline release is modulated by agonists or antagonists at presynaptic alpha 2-adrenoceptors. In experiments on slices, noradrenaline and the preferential alpha-adrenoceptor agonists talipexole (former B-HT 920) and clonidine inhibited the NMDA-evoked tritium overflow whereas the selective alpha 1-adrenoceptor agonists cirazoline and methoxamine were ineffective. The alpha 2-adrenoceptor antagonists rauwolscine and idazoxan facilitated the NMDA-evoked tritium overflow whereas the preferential alpha 1-adrenoceptor antagonist prazosin was ineffective. The concentration-response curve of talipexole for its inhibitory effect on NMDA-evoked overflow was shifted to the right by idazoxan (apparent pA2 = 7.5). The EC50 of NMDA (97 mumol/l) for its stimulating effect on tritium overflow was not substantially changed by blockade of alpha 2-autoreceptors with 1 mumol/l rauwolscine (EC50 of NMDA in the presence of the alpha 2-adrenoceptor antagonist, 155 mumol/l), but the maximal overflow of tritium was increased 2.5 fold by this rauwolscine concentration. In experiments on synaptosomes, talipexole and noradrenaline inhibited the NMDA-evoked tritium overflow. The inhibitory effect of talipexole was abolished by idazoxan which, given alone, was ineffective, as was prazosin. Talipexole did also not produce an inhibition when tritium overflow was evoked by NMDA in the presence of omega-conotoxin GVIA 0.1 mumol/l; the latter, by itself, decreased the response to NMDA by about 55%.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
