Comments on G. M. Macmann and D. W. Barnett's (see record 1995-15770-001) argument that the Wechsler scales are probably best suited to serve as measures of "g," and that the verbal and performance factors are "truncated or degraded versions of the general factor." These arguments have empirical weight when viewed with tunnel vision, but lose power in a more clinical, practical context. Ss were 101 introductory psychology students, 48 of whom were high scorers and 53 of whom were low scorers on an authoritarianism scale. A series of 24 separate stimulus cards of a semiprojective nature similar to the Rosenzweig pictures studied some of the interrelationships among authoritarianism, punitiveness, and status. The data indicate that low authoritarians respond to frustrators independently of their status. Monitoring computer users' behaviour to enhance the usability of software has become increasingly popular among the developers of computer products. One objective of this paper is to compare the use of a software monitoring technique with other field observation methods. It is argued that when contrasted against traditional observation techniques, the software monitor provides a more accurate and unobtrusive approach to collecting behavioural data on larger samples of individuals for longer periods of time than either participant observation or Thinking Aloud methodologies. A second objective is to demonstrate the application of software monitors on installed multi-user systems. Technical aspects of software monitor design are discussed, with emphasis on specific practical problems in monitor design and utilization when making the transition from the laboratory to an office environment. Data from two studies are presented. The first illustrates how a software monitor can be used to determine the impact and acceptance of various software packages in an integrated office automation product. Describes the activities of the Developmental and Social Research Unit at the American Broadcasting Companies. This unit consists of social scientists and other researchers, including psychologists and sociologists. They are responsible for (1) monitoring social trends in society, (2) conducting primary research to assess the impact of TV, (3) evaluating current research on the effects of TV and providing this information to management, and (4) serving as a liaison to the academic community. The author suggests that industry executives often find research results too theoretical for practical application. The internal electric field produced by a constant source impurity diffusion is calculated using Fermi-Dirac statistics for the majority carrier. Numerical results indicate that treating the material as if it were nondegenerate always produces an underestimate in the electric field. The effects of loading rate on bio‐, nano‐, and microcellular composite systems have been studied. Fiber–resin systems have been manufactured and dynamically tested at various speeds to assess their strain‐rate dependencies (rate hardening) and energy‐dissipation characteristics compared to conventional materials. The following composite systems have been fabricated and studied: polypropylene/sisal fiber biocomposite, hemp/vinyl ester biocomposite, thermoplastic olefin/nanoclay composite, microcellular polypropylene/sisal fiber biocomposite, and microcellular thermoplastic olefin/nanoclay composite. It has been determined that the biocomposite systems studied possess unique energy dissipation characteristics and muted rate dependence, while the nanocomposite system did not. In addition, microcellular foaming of these materials further enhanced the effects. Though the exact mechanisms at play are not fully understood at this point, it has been found that in addition to the microcellular voids, the anatomical vasculature of the natural fibers may play a role in energy dissipation processes in these hybrid materials. Plant secondary metabolites (PSMs) are a major constraint to the ingestion of food by folivorous and browsing herbivores. Understanding the way in which mammalian detoxification pathways are adapted to deal with PSMs is crucial to understanding how PSMs influence ingestive behavior of herbivores and hence their fitness and the impact that they have on vegetation. Pharmacological concepts can provide insights into the relationship between the absorption and metabolic fate of PSMs and ingestive behavior. Lipophilic PSMs will be absorbed into the bloodstream and must be removed fast enough to prevent their accumulation to toxic levels. Elimination depends on their metabolism, usually by cytochrome P450 enzymes, to more polar metabolites that can be excreted by the kidney. The concentration of PSM in blood (C) is a better measure of exposure to a toxin compared to the amount ingested because there can be great variability in the rate and degree of absorption from the gut. C rises and falls depending on the relative rates of absorption and elimination. These rates depend in part on metabolic and transport processes that are saturable and liable to inhibition and induction by PSMs, indicating that complex interactions are likely. Herbivores can use diet choice and the rate and amount of PSM consumption to prevent C from reaching a critical level that produces significant adverse effects. 相似文献
