To study the effect of strong iron-ligands on steel corrosion, mild steel electrodes were immersed in solutions containing 20 mM phosphate buffer (pH=7.2) and between 0.01 mM and 1 M of either the iron(II)-chelators 2,2-bipyridine or FerroZine, or the iron(III)-chelators citrate or acetylacetonate. Resulting surface reactions were investigated by quantifying the electrochemical potential (E), the electrochemical polarization resistance (Rp), the corrosion current (Icorr) and the release of iron into solution. The surface was further analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM/SEM-EDAX) and atomic force microscopy. Concentrations of 0.1 mM of any of the chelators led to slight, temporary changes in E, Icorr and Rp. Concentrations of 10 mM resulted in characteristic changes of E, which were the same for all chelators and in the precipitation of FePO4 in the case of citrate and acetylacetonate, or vivianite [Fe3(PO4)2 · 8H2O] in the case of bipyridine and FerroZine. Concentrations of 1 mM of both iron(III)-chelators led to a temporary drop of E similar to that found with 0.1 mM chelator. With iron(II)-chelators, E dropped to about −500 mV before oscillating for several days. The amplitudes of the oscillations were up to 200 mV with periods of 30 and 20-25 min for bipyridine and FerroZine, respectively.  相似文献

Early thrombolytic therapy gives maximum benefit in acute myocardial infarction. In remote rural areas with no mobile intensive care service there is a significant delay between onset of symptoms and administration of thrombolytic therapy which has a critical impact on revascularization. Thrombolytic therapy with streptokinase 1,500,000 U was given in a primary care rural clinic to 2 patients with evolving myocardial infarction 45-50 minutes from onset of symptoms. In both patients, who were transported to hospital after the therapy, there were clinical signs of reperfusion. There were no complications during treatment or transportation. We conclude that thrombolytic therapy given for evolving myocardial infarction in a rural primary care clinic is possible and safe.  相似文献

The effect of oxygen addition to microwave-sustained plasmas of hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) has been investigated. Attention was directed to the solid products formed on aluminium substrates (plasma deposits). To enable a quantitative analysis of these, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of standard silicon-containing materials was carried out. When suitable charge correction is applied to the XP spectra of HMDSO/O2 plasma deposits, a number of very clear trends emerge. From changes in elemental composition, core line binding energies (Si2p, C 1s, and O 1s) and widths, we show how oxygen addition to the plasma affects the chemical nature of the plasma deposit. The data reported also provide (some limited) information on the reactions taking place in the plasma.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Recipient antidonor cytotoxic T-cell activity has been associated with graft loss and acute rejection in renal allograft recipients. The role of immunologic mechanisms in the development of chronic graft rejection is controversial. We analyzed all living related renal transplants performed at Children's Hospital (Boston, MA) from 1983 to 1995 to assess whether cell-mediated cytotoxicity, determined in vitro and measured before transplantation, was predictive of chronic rejection. METHODS: Eighty-three patients were studied retrospectively. Fifty-seven patients with one haplotype-matched renal transplants from living related donors were studied to determine the association between cell-mediated lympholysis (CML) level, acute rejection, chronic rejection, and graft failure. Acute rejection was defined by the decision to treat. Chronic rejection was defined by histology and/or the absolute serum creatinine value using an increasing serum creatinine level >1.0 mg/dl for children less than 3, a creatinine level >1.5 mg/dl for children between 3 and 10 years of age, and a creatinine level >2.0 mg/dl for children above 10 years of age. Return to dialysis or retransplantation was considered graft failure. RESULTS: Of the 57 haploidentical patients, there were 33 males and 24 females. The mean age at transplant was 11.1 years (SD=6.7). Twelve patients developed chronic rejection, 24 patients developed acute rejection, and 7 patients had graft failure. Pretransplant cytotoxic T lymphocyte activity was associated with chronic rejection (P=0.001) and graft failure (P=0.013) but only marginally with acute rejection (P=0.058). Controlling for age and sex, Cox's proportional hazards model revealed that CML level was predictive of time to chronic rejection (P<0.01) but not acute rejection (P=0.11). It was estimated that every 1-unit increase in CML level raises the monthly risk of chronic rejection by 7%. Ten children received HLA-identical kidneys from their siblings. There were no episodes of chronic rejection after 5 years. Two patients with high CML levels had episodes of acute rejection; both patients responded to treatment. CONCLUSION: Our data demonstrate an association between pretransplant cell-mediated cytotoxicity and the occurrence of chronic rejection in living related one-haploidentical renal transplants in pediatric patients.  相似文献

This study examined the relationship of several maternal variables to the duration of exclusive breast-feeding and the total duration of breast-feeding, along with attitudes, perceptions, and beliefs about breast-feeding among women living in poor neighborhoods of Managua, Nicaragua. The field work was carried out in December 1992 and January 1993 using qualitative and quantitative methods. A structured questionnaire was administered in interviews with 556 mothers of children under 12 months of age, and meetings of four directed discussion groups were held, in which a total of 20 women participated. At one week of age, almost all the children of the mothers who were surveyed had been breast-fed, but only 45% had been exclusively breast-fed. At 12 weeks old, 30% were already completely weaned. The discussion groups revealed the coexistence of positive opinions about both breast-feeding and bottle-feeding. However, exclusive breast-feeding was considered harmful for the mother, and breast milk was not thought to be sufficient nourishment for the child. Previous experience was strongly related to the duration of exclusive breast-feeding and to total breast-feeding duration. Attitudes, social support, and work situation were important factors influencing the total length of time women breast-fed a child. In general, the results obtained through the interviews and in the discussion groups were in agreement and showed that the elements needed to promote exclusive breast-feeding were social support, a favorable community environment, and policies that dealt with problems faced by working mothers. The complementary research methods were useful for obtaining information about the relative importance of different factors that determine the duration of breast-feeding and for understanding that practice in greater depth from the mother's point of view.  相似文献

This paper describes the state of Constraint Databases (CDBs), a young discipline at the intersection of Database Management, Constraint Programming, Computational Geometry and Operations Research. As in Constraint Logic Programming, constraints in CDBs are a first class data type, and can play many modeling roles including spatial and temporal behavior, complex design requirements, and partial and incomplete information, for which existing databases have proven inadequate. We motivate the importance of CDBs, outline the work in the area that has been done, the current trends, and future directions and challenges. We briefly discuss (1) constraint modeling, canonical forms and algebras, (2) data models and query languages, (3) indexing and approximation-based filtering, (4) constraint algebra algorithms and global optimization, and (5) systems and case studies. We argue that CDBs are a promising technology that will impact many important application realms, and furthermore have the potential to be integrated into future database systems, and operations research and constraint programming tools.  相似文献

The use of rapid isothermal processing (RIP) is detailed for each of the three annealing steps in the fabrication of heterostructure-based devices such as heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs). RIP can be used for the alloying of ohmic metal contacts, annealing of ion-bombarded regions for device isolation or parasitic capacitance reduction, and for conventional implant activation annealing. High-speed (fT=65 GHz) HBTs were achieved using RIP for all of the required heating steps. The authors compare the use of several types of silicon carbide-coated graphite susceptors for eliminating slip formation on 2- and 3-in-diameter GaAs wafers during high-temperature implant activation annealing  相似文献
