We review the theoretical research on the influence of disorder on structure and phase behavior of condensed matter system exhibiting continuous symmetry breaking focusing on liquid crystal phase transitions. We discuss the main properties of liquid crystals as adequate systems in which several open questions with respect to the impact of disorder on universal phase and structural behavior could be explored. Main advantages of liquid crystalline materials and different experimental realizations of random field-type disorder imposed on liquid crystal phases are described.  相似文献

Metal–insulator–metal capacitor (MIMC) reliability and electrical properties are defined by the TDDB lifetime, breakdown voltage and leakage current. In this article, the correlation is determined between these electrical properties and the physical and chemical properties of the SiN dielectric layer. It is demonstrated how a SiN dielectrics with a high refractive index have high Si content and show an increased initial leakage current. However, contradictory to the high leakage current, these dielectrics also show high lifetimes. It is shown that SiN dielectrics with a high Si content contain high numbers of charge trapping centers. Over time, a high concentration of trapped charges is build up to such an extend that the local electric field over the dielectric is significantly decreased. This results in the observed reliability improvement of the dielectric. The final intrinsic quality and reliability of MIMC capacitors can therefore be determined by measurable physical properties of the MIMC dielectric at the time of the deposition of this layer.  相似文献

Super‐resolution fluorescence microscopy enables imaging of fluorescent structures beyond the diffraction limit. However, this technique cannot be applied to weakly fluorescent cellular components or labels. As an alternative, photothermal microscopy based on nonradiative transformation of absorbed energy into heat has demonstrated imaging of nonfluorescent structures including single molecules and ~1‐nm gold nanoparticles. However, previously photothermal imaging has been performed with a diffraction‐limited resolution only. Herein, super‐resolution, far‐field photothermal microscopy based on nonlinear signal dependence on the laser energy is introduced. Among various nonlinear phenomena, including absorption saturation, multiphoton absorption, and signal temperature dependence, signal amplification by laser‐induced nanobubbles around overheated nano‐objects is explored. A Gaussian laser beam profile is used to demonstrate the image spatial sharpening for calibrated 260‐nm metal strips, resolving of a plasmonic nanoassembly, visualization of 10‐nm gold nanoparticles in graphene, and hemoglobin nanoclusters in live erythrocytes with resolution down to 50 nm. These nonlinear phenomena can be used for 3D imaging with improved lateral and axial resolution in most photothermal methods, including photoacoustic microscopy.  相似文献

Successful massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs) have today millions of registered users and hundreds of thousands of active concurrent players. To be able to guarantee quality of service (QoS) to a highly variable number of concurrent users, game operators statically over-provision a large infrastructure capable of sustaining the game peak load, even though a large portion of the resources is unused most of the time. To address this problem, we introduce in this work a new MMOG ecosystem for hosting and provisioning of MMOGs which effectively splits the traditional monolithic MMOG companies into three main service providers: game providers, game operators, and resource providers. Their interaction is regulated through comprehensive service level agreements (SLA) that establish the price, terms of operation, and compensation for service violations. In our model, game operators efficiently provision resources for MMOGs from multiple cloud providers, based on dynamic load forecasts, and ensure proper game operation that maintains the required QoS to all clients under varying resource availability. Game providers manage multiple distributed MMOGs for which they lease services under strict operational SLAs from game operators to satisfy all client requests. These three self-standing, smaller, more agile service providers enable access to the MMOG market for the small and medium enterprises, and to the current commercial cloud providers. We evaluate, through simulations based on real-life MMOG traces and commercial cloud SLAs, the impact of resource availability on the QoS offered to the MMOG clients. We find that our model can mitigate the negative effects of resource failures within four minutes and that MMOG server consolidation can accentuate the negative effects of failures in a resource-scarce environment. We further investigate different methods of ranking MMOG operational offers with either single or multiple (competing) MMOG providers. Our results show that compensations for SLA faults in the offer selection process can lead up to 11–16 % gain in the game providers’ income. We also demonstrate that adequate ranking of offers can lead to MMOG operational cost reductions from 20 up to 60 %.  相似文献

The modern strain sensors currently used in monitoring the structural properties of such tank structures suffer from a number of limitations, including a low level of sensitivity and detection. In this work, we present a novel method of structural monitoring utilizing a thin film of carbon nanotubes carefully deposited on carbon fiber composites. The nanotube film and raw material were first characterized via microscopy and spectroscopy techniques. Bowing of the tank wall was simulated by applying a three-point bend load test, which was found to strongly affect the electrical resistance of the carbon nanotube film. These measurements were very reproducible, as the film resistance returned to its original value each time that the load was slowly released. We believe that these highly sensitive carbon nanotube films are potential candidates as replacements for the current health-monitoring sensors.  相似文献

The improvement of wood-plastic composites properties by additives and compatibilizers is a critical issue to produce value-added materials. High-density polyethylene-wood composites have been obtained through compression molding at 140 °C, using two types of additives, namely methyltrioctylammonium bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide and trihexyltetradecylphosphonium bis (2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinate room temperature ionic liquids. The ionic liquids improve the interfacial adhesion between the wood and the polymer phases, contributing to an increased stability of the material to water action and to an improved impact resistance and tensile strength in comparison with the reference. Also, the FTIR spectroscopy tests have proven a higher resistance of the ionic liquid-containing composites to accelerated photooxidation. Preliminary screening tests have also proven the antifungal character of the ionic liquids used in this study against brown rot (Postia placenta). This study opens new insights in the domain of polymeric composite materials, through documenting the possibility of blending new types of chemically distinct materials, difficult to be achieved by traditional functionalization/derivatization routes.  相似文献
