Widespread posttraumatic spinal subdural hematoma--imaging findings with spontaneous resolution: case report

A 63-year-old man developed paraparesis and signs of meningeal irritation 4 days after a fall which caused a minor contusion of the cervical spine. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed an extensive spinal subdural hematoma. The usefulness of MRI for diagnosis and successful conservative treatment is discussed.     

Monolithic integration of microlensed resonant photodetectors andvertical cavity lasers

Monolithic integration of high performance microlensed resonant photodetectors and vertical cavity lasers (VCLs) from a single epitaxial growth is presented. The VCLs have sub-200 μA threshold currents. Adjacent detectors have the same operating wavelength and responsivities of ~0.4 A/W with ~6 nm optical bandwidths     

Determination of the electrical conductivity of heat-resistant concretes

The problem of the electrical conductivity of heat-resistant concretes and bonding agents is considered and a method for determining this parameter is suggested. In addition to the thermal resistivity, the electric conductivity is a factor affecting the lifetime of lining materials for high-temperature devices. Utilization of wastes of refractory production in plasma plants

Trimethylpentanediol dibenzoate: New plasticizer for plastisol screen ink

Trimethylpentane diol (TMPD) dibenzoate use in vinyl as a plasticizer is not well recognized, and little has been published on vinyl performance characteristics. To assess new applications for vinyl, a basic evaluation was conducted. Based on the results of the screen and other considerations an evaluation for utility in plastisol silk screen ink was conducted. The results indicated that the TMPD dibenzoate performed very well in white ink, requiring good fabric dye bleed resistance compared to polymeric and phthalates currently being used for non-bleed ink. Non-bleed characteristics are important for colored tee shirt printing. The benzoate is a good solvator and has excellent extraction resistance.     

Corrosion morphologies on magnesium alloy AZ 91

Initiation and early propagation of pitting and filiform corrosion on bare alloy AZ91 (9% Al, 1% Zn) are investigated by natural immersion corrosion tests, electrochemical measurements and microanalytical studies. Initiation sites are few. Corrosion spreads from these sites first in the form of filiform corrosion for a limited period of time and pitting which later develops into a cellular type of etching. The important factors affecting filiform corrosion are temperature, material structure and degree of polarization at the anodic sites. Filiform attack on AZ91, unlike the classical mechanisms of filiform corrosion on coated metals, is driven by hydrogen evolution reaction on the cathodic sites of the surface, occurs under significant anodic control, propagates at a high, constant speed independent of degree of polarization along preferential paths determined by compositional and crystallographic factors, and is a temporary phenomenon under open circuit conditions. Pitting corrosion is more predominant with decreasing anodic polarization.     

Efficiency of raising the lining endurance in induction furnaces

Induction furnaces are expected to have wider application in industry. Published data are used to show that the endurance of refractory crucibles in such furnaces is unsatisfactory. The authors give their own data on the operation of high-endurance linings. The effect of the endurance on the technical and economical parameters of heating and the quality of the molten material is discussed.Translated fron Ogneupory, No. 6, pp. 23 – 25, June, 1994     

Optimal nonnegative color scanning filters

In this correspondence, the problem of designing color scanning filters for multi-illuminant color recording is considered. The filter transmittances are determined from a minimum-mean-squared orthogonal tristimulus error criterion that minimizes the color error in estimates obtained from noisy recorded data. Nonnegativity constraints essential for physical realizability are imposed on the filter transmittances. In order to demonstrate the significant improvements obtained, the resulting filters are compared with suboptimal filters reported in earlier literature.     

Developmental expression of nitric oxide synthase in the rat diencephalon with special reference to the thalamic paratenial nucleus

Using immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization the distribution of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) was investigated in the rat brain during pre- and postnatal development. At E15 weak NOS-like immunoreactivity (NOS-LI) could be seen in the differentiation field of the anterior hypothalamus. At E17 strong NOS-LI was observed in the developing neurons of the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus, supraoptic nucleus, anterodorsal nucleus and lateral hypothalamic areas. In the thalamic paratenial nucleus a strong NOS-LI was observed in these neurons at E17, E18 and P1 with a weaker intensity at P3, P7, P9 and P15, whereas at P30 and in adult rats no NOS-positive neurons could be detected. NOS expression at E17 and P3 was verified by in situ hybridization. These results suggest that NO may have a developmental role at least in one of the regions studied, the thalamic paratenial nucleus.
