Papermaking sludge (PS), a waste residue from the pulp and paper processing, has brought great pressure on the environment because of large quantities that are produced in paper mills. This work was carried out to explore the possibility of making PS/cement composite products using solid waste of PS. Boards measuring 350 × 270 × 12 mm3 were manufactured using PS contents of 40, 50, and 60 wt%, adhesive dosages of 0, 10, and 15 wt%, and 0 and 5 wt% of calcium chloride as an accelerator. At least three replications were fabricated for each treatment, and some mechanical and physical properties of the boards were evaluated. Test results showed that the bending and internal strengths of the specimens decreased with an increase in the PS content, and the maximum values were obtained at PS loading of 40 wt%. The negative influence of PS content on the mechanical properties can be explained by the reduced bonding ability because of weaker PS compared with cement. Screw withdrawal values were up to 22.7 kPa. Water absorption and thickness swelling of cement mortar considerably increased with increased content of PS, with a corresponding reduction of bulk density. In general, all properties of the boards were improved when the adhesive and calcium chloride contents were increased. The results showed that an increase in board density improved the mechanical and physical properties. Permeation of sodium chloride and glucose through polydimethylsiloxane‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PDMS‐PNIPAAm) interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) of two different microstructures was investigated. We have successfully developed small‐molecule permeable IPNs, by modifying PDMS film structure. A group of PDMS films was prepared using conventional solvent casting (SC) method and another group produced by introducing oil, followed by SC and leaching the oil out (SCOL method). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and attenuated total reflection fourier transformer infrared (ATR‐FTIR) spectroscopy results confirmed the presence of PNIPAAm in the SC and SCOL IPNs. Results obtained from spectra of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that these IPNs had a phase transition temperature at about 32°C. Permeation measurements showed that the presence of PNIPAAm as the second phase in the IPN, improved the permeability of PDMS film. According to the results, maximum permeation coefficient was related to SCOL IPN containing 15.8% ± 0.3%PNIPAAm, at 23°C (5.98 × 10?7 ± 7.93 × 10?9 cm2/s for sodium chloride and 3.6 × 10?7 ± 7 × 10?9 cm2/s for glucose). These results suggested that these PDMS‐PNIPAAm IPNs with sodium chloride and glucose permeability may be further developed as ophthalmic biomaterials or corneal replacements. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Various (low‐density polyethylene)/poly(ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate) (LDPE/EVA) nanocomposites containing organoclay were prepared by one‐ and two‐step procedures through melt blending. The resultant nanocomposites were then processed via the film blowing method. From the morphological point of view, X‐ray diffraction and optical microscopy studies revealed that although a prevalent intercalated morphology was evident in the absence of EVA, a remarkable increase of organoclay interlayer spacing occurred in the EVA‐containing systems. The advantages of the addition of EVA to the LDPE/organoclay nanocomposites were confirmed in terms of oxygen barrier properties. In other words, the oxygen transmission rates of the LDPE/EVA/organoclay systems were significantly lower than that of the LDPE/organoclay sample. The LDPE/EVA/organoclay films had better mechanical properties than their counterparts lacking the EVA, a result which could be attributed to the improvement of the organoclay reinforcement efficiency in the presence of EVA. Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis experiments were performed to follow the effects of the EVA and/or organoclay on the thermal properties of LDPE. Finally, the films produced from the two‐step‐procedure compound showed enhanced oxygen barrier properties and mechanical behavior as compared to the properties of the films produced via the one‐step procedure. To calculate the radiant intensity at a point distant from a radiator, a geometrical or configuration factor must be used. If the temperature is known, then the emissive power can be calculated using the mean equivalent beam length, but before the radiant heat flux at a distance can be estimated, a configuration factor must be calculated. In this article a simple predictive tool is developed to estimate the configuration factor for a geometry including a receiving element lying on the perpendicular to one corner of a radiant rectangle. The results are found to be in excellent agreement with reported data in the literature with average absolute deviation being around 2%. The results can be used in follow up calculations to estimate heat fluxes on surfaces exposed to radiation. The tool developed in this study can be of immense practical value for engineers as a quick check on the configuration factor for a geometry including a receiving element lying on the perpendicular to one corner of a radiant rectangle without opting for any experimental trials. In particular, engineers would find the approach to be user-friendly with transparent calculations involving no complex expressions.  相似文献

The feasibility of using tea waste (TW) as a low-cost adsorbent for the adsorption of an anionic dye (Congo red) from aqueous solution has been investigated. Adsorption in a batch process was conducted to study the effect of adsorbent dosage, initial dye concentration, contact time, pH, and temperature. The experimental data were analyzed by the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin models. The adsorption system was best described by the Langmuir isotherm (R 2 > 0.99). Adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order model (R 2 > 0.99). The effect of mechanical treatment (vibratory mill) was also studied. The experimental results showed that using this physical treatment leads to an increase in the adsorption capacity of TW from 32.26 to 43.48 mg/g. Thermodynamic analyses revealed that the adsorption of Congo red on TW was endothermic and spontaneous in nature. The results indicated that TW can be employed as a potential low-cost adsorbent for the removal of Congo red from aqueous solution.  相似文献

In this study the Eulerian particle model was modified to predict the particle deposition rate in fully developed channel flow. The modified model is less complicated and has much lower computation time. The performance of the simplified model was examined by comparing the particle deposition rate in a vertical channel with the experimental data for fully developed channel flow available in the literature. The effects of turbophoretic force, thermophoretic force, electrostatic force, gravitational force, Brownian/turbulent diffusion, and the wall roughness on the particle deposition rate were examined. The predictions of the modified particle model were in agreement with the experimental data.  相似文献

The effects of i-butane addition to methanol in MTP reaction were investigated over an in-house prepared HZSM-5 catalyst. It was observed that, propylene yield would be enhanced when i-butane fed to the reactor along with methanol. The rising growth of the propylene yield continued to peak on till the balance in thermal condition established. Similar trends have been observed when water was added to the mixture. The effect of WHSV with fixed water composition on product distribution was also studied. The optimum point where the highest amount of propylene yielded was shown to be high depended upon the temperature and residence time.  相似文献

A theoretical analysis is provided of the continuity of multiphase compositional space parameterization for thermal‐compositional reservoir simulation. It is shown that the tie‐simplex space changes continuously as a function of composition, pressure, and temperature, and this justifies the Compositional Space Adaptive Tabulation (CSAT) framework, in which a discrete number of tie‐simplexes are constructed, tabulated, and reused in the course of a simulation. The CSAT is extended for thermal‐compositional displacements for mixtures that can form an arbitrary number of phases. In particular, the construction is described of three‐phase tie‐simplex tables, and it is shown how the degeneration of multiphase regions can be accurately captured over wide ranges of temperature and pressure. This study contributes with a computational fluid dynamic simulation based on the numerical solution of continuity and momentum balance equations in a three‐dimensional (3‐D) framework. The proposed down flow gas–solid suspension model includes a unit configuration and CD drag coefficients recommended for these units. Computational particle fluid dynamics (CPFD) calculations using suitable boundary conditions and a Barracuda (version: 14.5.2) software allow predicting local solid densification and asymmetric “wavy flows.” In addition, this model forecasts for the conditions of this study higher particle velocity than gas velocity, once the flow reaches 1 m from the gas injector. These findings are accompanied with observations about the intrinsic rotational character of the flow. CPFD numerical 3‐D calculations show that both gas and particle velocities involve the following: (a) an axial velocity component, (b) a radial velocity component (about 5% of axial velocity component), and (c) an angular velocity component. ABSTRACT

In this study, the effect of various nano-particle type and concentration on the structure, curing, viscosity variation during vulcanisation, and mechanical characteristics of ethylene–propylene–diene monomer (EPDM) rubber foam is reported. Three types of nanoparticle with various dimensional aspects (1D carbon nanotubes, 2D nano clay, and 3D nano silica) are employed to investigate their effect on the fabrication of EPDM rubber foam. It is observed that the properties of the foams were efficiently influenced by the nano-particle shapes and content in the matrix. Nanoparticles may increase cell density and change cell structures. In addition, they can change the curing behaviour of foam rubber by affecting curing rate and scorch time of rubber. In the end, mechanical properties of EPDM foam rubbers investigated by experimental tests and implementing few empirical and constitutional mechanical models. It is very helpful to use suitable nanoparticle to achieve desired properties out of fabricated foams.  相似文献
