Packaging fresh lamb in a vacuum (VAC) versus a 100% CO2 modified atmosphere (MAP) may influence product shelf-life and the bacterial communities. While VAC is a common packing method and 100% CO2 MAP is used in some countries, there is little information about how these different techniques affect the growth of spoilage bacteria and sensory attributes of lamb. The aim of this study was to assess changes in microbiological and organoleptic properties, and determine differences in microbial communities by terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (TRFLP) and 454 pyrosequencing, in bone-in (BI) and bone-out (BO) MAP- and VAC-packed lamb shoulders stored at −0.3 °C over 12 wk. VAC and MAP lamb shoulders were acceptable in sensory test scores over 12 wk of storage at −0.3 °C, despite total viable count (TVC) and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) levels increasing to 8 log10 CFU/cm2 for VAC lamb and 4–6 log10 CFU/cm2 for MAP lamb. Similar to the sensory results, there were no significant differences in microbial communities between BI and BO product. However, types of bacteria were different between VAC and MAP packaging. Specifically, while VAC shoulder became dominated by Carnobacterium spp. in the middle of the storage period, the MAP shoulder microbial population remained similar from the start until later storage times.  相似文献

To examine the impact of integrated treatment programs (those with substance use treatment and pregnancy-, parenting-, or child-related services) on maternal mental health, we compiled a database of studies of integrated programs published between 1990 and 2007 with outcome data on maternal mental health. There were 18 cohort studies, 3 randomized trials, and 2 quasi-experimental studies. Of the five studies comparing integrated to nonintegrated programs, three studies provided enough information to allow for them to be combined in a meta-analysis. The average effect size was 0.23 (95% CI = 0.15 to 0.31, SE = 0.04), p Q = 5.66, p = .059. This meta-analysis is the first systematic quantitative review of studies evaluating the impact of integrated programs on maternal mental health. Findings suggest that integrated programs may be associated with a small advantage over nonintegrated programs in improving maternal mental health. This review highlights the need for further research with improved methodology, study quality, and reporting to improve our understanding of how best to meet the mental health needs of mothers with substance abuse issues. Concerns about the potential health effects of exposure to nanomaterials have led to a growing number of in vivo inhalation toxicity studies using nanoparticle aerosols. Estimates of aerosol deposition within the respiratory tract are important for these studies to enable: (a) the interpretation of the results, in particular, the evaluation of dose–response relationships; (b) comparison with the results of other related studies; and (c) the extrapolation of results from animal models to human. Unfortunately, only a limited number of studies have been undertaken to investigate respiratory tract deposition efficiencies for nano-sized aerosol particles. This is of particular importance as deposition efficiencies are predicted to vary significantly over the nano-size range for some elements of the respiratory tract. In this study, female Wistar-Kyoto rats were exposed in a new design nose-only inhalation exposure system to spark generated radioactive iridium-192 nanoparticle aerosols of four particle sizes chosen to cover the majority of the nano-size range (nominal sizes: 10, 15, 35, and 75 nm). The content of iridium-192 in the lung, head, gastrointestinal tract, and various other organs and tissues was measured. Aerosol deposition efficiencies in the whole respiratory tract and components (head airways, lung, alveolar region, and tracheobronchial region) were estimated and compared with the predictions of the Multiple Path Particle Dosimetry (MPPD) model (v2.11). The experimentally derived deposition efficiencies were broadly consistent with, but typically higher than, model predictions and the results of comparable studies in the literature.

The combined use of global positioning system (GPS) technology and motion sensors within the discipline of movement ecology has increased over recent years. This is particularly the case for instrumented wildlife, with many studies now opting to record parameters at high (infra-second) sampling frequencies. However, the detail with which GPS loggers can elucidate fine-scale movement depends on the precision and accuracy of fixes, with accuracy being affected by signal reception. We hypothesized that animal behaviour was the main factor affecting fix inaccuracy, with inherent GPS positional noise (jitter) being most apparent during GPS fixes for non-moving locations, thereby producing disproportionate error during rest periods. A movement-verified filtering (MVF) protocol was constructed to compare GPS-derived speed data with dynamic body acceleration, to provide a computationally quick method for identifying genuine travelling movement. This method was tested on 11 free-ranging lions (Panthera leo) fitted with collar-mounted GPS units and tri-axial motion sensors recording at 1 and 40 Hz, respectively. The findings support the hypothesis and show that distance moved estimates were, on average, overestimated by greater than 80% prior to GPS screening. We present the conceptual and mathematical protocols for screening fix inaccuracy within high-resolution GPS datasets and demonstrate the importance that MVF has for avoiding inaccurate and biased estimates of movement.  相似文献

Polyacrylates were prepared by solution polymerization of partially neutralized acrylic acid at 37°C. The swelling behavior of the polyacrylates was examined using equilibrium and dynamic swelling studies. Equilibrium swelling studies in deionized water were used to determine the molecular weight between crosslinks using the Flory-Rehner theory. The amount of crosslinking agent incorporated into the network was a function of the nominal crosslinking ratio. Dynamic swelling studies in saline solutions were used to investigate the initial swelling rate for the polyacrylates. Swelling studies of the polyacrylates in saline solutions under load were used to elucidate the degree of swelling under load, the compliance, and sample elasticity.  相似文献

Antiplasticization behavior was found in the polycaprolactone (PCL)/polycarbonate (PC)-modified epoxy system, cured with an aromatic amine. The initial modulus increased and the fracture toughness and the elongation at break decreased with the addition of the PCL/PC modifier. The glass transition temperature (Tg) decreased slightly. In this system, the antiplasticization phenomenon can be explained well by the formation of hydrogen bonding between the carbonyl groups in the PCL/PC and the hydroxyl groups in the epoxy. The hydrogen bonding proportion, as analyzed from Fourier transform infrared spectra, increased with the addition of PCL/PC up to 15 parts. This is consistent with the trend observed in the mechanical properties. It was thought that for antiplasticization to occur, a strong molecular interaction is necessary for a restriction of molecular motion, in turn decreasing the free volume of the matrix and thereby causing an increase in the modulus of the material. The dynamic mechanical thermal behavior of these systems was also studied. It was found that there was no change in the molecular weights between crosslinks, which excluded the effect of crosslink density on the changes of the properties. Instead, the activation energy was increased and the peak area was decreased for the β relaxation because of the restriction of the molecular motion by hydrogen bonding. The results indirectly support the hypothesis that the motion of the 2-hydroxypropyl ether is responsible for the β relaxation process.  相似文献

There are numerous wear problems associated with the use of pivoted cam follower valve train systems in modern high-speed automotive engines. These problems have led to the introduction of an increasing number of engines of this type as specification tests to assess the antiwear performance of lubricants. Critical conditions for wear in these systems have been identified by the application of a steady-wear process model to the kinematic analysis of the cam/follower contact cycle. The positions of maximum wear identified by this technique showed better agreement with worn engine components than the more commonly used criteria of maximum contact pressure and oil film thickness.  相似文献

The overall objective of this research was to correlate the processing—fiber arrangement—properties relationships of composites. In order to do this, an experimental technique to quantitatively characterize the fiber arrangement was developed. Using this technique, the compression molded graphite/epoxy composites, CMC, were found to have a standard deviation of fiber spacing of about twice the value of those from the simulated random composites, SRC. The standard deviation of fiber volume fraction for CMC was about 4 times the value of SRC. In other words, the fibers in this laboratory CMC were poorly distributed relative to SRC.  相似文献
