Supervisory system for cascaded semiconductor laser amplifier repeaters

A technique for locating a transmission path failure in an inline cascade of semiconductor laser amplifier repeaters to within one fibre span is demonstrated. If a fault occurs, the loss of signal is detected in the following repeaters and a locally generated tone modulates the spontaneous emission of the repeater, signalling the fault to the system terminals.<>     

Proximate Composition, Mineral Content, and Fatty Acids of Catfish (Ictalurus punctatus, Rafinesque) for Different Seasons and Cooking Methods

The effect of conventional cooking methods and the influence of season upon proximate composition, mineral, and fatty acid profile was studied in catfish (Ictalurus punctatus, Rafinesque) fillets. Seasonal (August, December, and April purchased fillets) influences were minimal. As expected, fried catfish fillets had significantly altered (P ≤ 0.05) fatty acid profiles compared to the raw and baked fillets. All three cooking treatments resulted in significant differences (P ≤ 0.05) in proximate composition and in the levels of potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, and iron. The information presented would be useful for nutrient data banks when dietary intake of such items is of interest.     

Demand elasticities in OECD: Dynamical aspects

Four models with different lag structures are used to express final energy demand in OECD from 1960–1982 as a function of real GDP and average energy price. The income and long-run price elasticities are not significantly dependent on the model specification, but the Koyck lag scheme, estimated in its distributed lag form, is found to give the most satisfactory results. The statistical properties of the data together with evidence of trends in the elasticities both suggest that the period of falling real prices prior to 1971 is not comparable to the present period. For the period after 1971, an income elsticity of 1.02 and a long-run price elasticity of -0.37 are obtained.     

Egg Thiamine Status of Lake Ontario Salmonines 1995–2004 with Emphasis on Lake Trout

Alewives (Alosa pseudoharengus), the major prey fish for Lake Ontario, contain thiaminase. They are associated with development of a thiamine deficiency in salmonines which greatly increases the potential for developing an early mortality syndrome (EMS). To assess the possible effects of thiamine deficiency on salmonine reproduction we measured egg thiamine concentrations for five species of Lake Ontario salmonines. From this we estimated the proportion of families susceptible to EMS based on whether they were below the ED20, the egg thiamine concentration associated with 20% mortality due to EMS. The ED20s were 1.52, 2.63, and 2.99 nmol/g egg for Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush), and coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch), respectively. Based on the proportion of fish having egg thiamine concentrations falling below the ED20, the risk of developing EMS in Lake Ontario was highest for lake trout, followed by coho (O. kisutch), and Chinook salmon, with the least risk for rainbow trout (O. mykiss). For lake trout from western Lake Ontario, mean egg thiamine concentration showed significant annual variability during 1994 to 2003, when the proportion of lake trout at risk of developing EMS based on ED20 ranged between 77 and 100%. Variation in the annual mean egg thiamine concentration for western Lake Ontario lake trout was positively related (p < 0.001, r² = 0.94) with indices of annual adult alewife biomass. While suggesting the possible involvement of density-dependent changes in alewives, the changes are small relative to egg thiamine concentrations when alewife are not part of the diet and are of insufficient magnitude to allow for natural reproduction by lake trout.     

On a common error in open and short circuit reliability computation

In reliability computations for complex systems subject to two kinds of failure, analysts sometimes underestimate system reliability by using a formula that actually applies only to certain simpler structures. This error occurs several times, for example, in an otherwise instructive paper by B.W. Jenney and D.J. Sherwin (ibid., vol.R-35, p.532-8, Dec. 1986). The purpose of this work is to describe the error, illustrate how it arises in practice, and offer a correction     

Non-specific antitumoral activity of staphylococcal enterotoxins

St. aureus enterotoxins A and B possess an antitumour effect. After intraperitoneal inoculation they decrease the size and in some cases prevent the development of the human hypernephroma in the cheek pouch of golden hamsters. The effect of enterotoxins may possibly consist in inducing the production of endogenous immune interferon which activates the host immune system and enhances the rejection of heterologous tumour cells.     

Corrosion and Crack Growth in 33% Na2O-67% SiO2 and 33% Li2O-67% SiO2 Glasses

Environmentally enhanced crack growth data for 33% Na₂O-67% SiO₂ and 33% Li₂O-67% SiO₂ (mol%) were obtained. Corrosion data for the same glasses as determined by infrared reflection spectroscopy and atomic absorption spectroscopy were also measured. It was determined that, of the tested environments, those and only those environments which caused surface corrosion also enhanced crack growth. Crack growth curves were more complicated for these materials than for fused silica. Water-dominated regions occurred even in environments which are known to enhance crack growth.     

Sensory Evaluation and Acceptability of Cookies Enriched with Sweet Lupine Flour (Lupinus albus cv Multolupa)

Cookies enriched with 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25% full-fat sweet lupine flour (FFSL) were evaluated by a sensory panel using the rank of preference and paired comparison tests. Cookies with 0, 5, and 10% FFSL were preferred while those containing 20 and 25% FFSL were rejected (p≤0.01). Studies conducted with school children showed similar acceptability for 0 and 10% FFSL-containing cookies which was different (p = 0.05) from those containing 20% FFSL. Fortification of the basic formula with 10% FFSL was recommended on the basis of acceptability.     

Psychosocial characteristics of adolescents who refuse cancer treatment.

Examined psychosocial variables by comparing 10 13–17 yr old adolescents (and their mothers) who had refused cancer treatment with a group of 10 consenting adolescents who were matched on age and demographic and illness variables. Adolescents completed the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children and measures of family characteristics, locus of control, religion, hopelessness, impact of event, and satisfaction with physician. Mothers completed the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and measures of coping and religion. Adolescent refusers scored lower on state anxiety and subjective distress but scored higher on trait anxiety, religiosity, and external locus of control. Their mothers also scored higher than did the consenting-group mothers on religiosity and trait anxiety. It is suggested that refusers are prone to anxiety and cope with their present distress by maintaining the belief that their lives are determined by fate or religious convictions.
