The anti-oxidant activity of extracts from 36 vegetables was evaluated by using a model system consisting of β-carotene and linoleic acid. The total phenolics of the extracts was determined spectrophotometrically according to the Folin–Ciocalteau procedure and ranged from 34 to 400 mg (100 g)−1 on a fresh weight basis. Mint, aonla, black carrots, chenopodium, fenugreek, kachnar and ginger had high phenolic contents. The anti-oxidant activity expressed as per percent inhibition of oxidation ranged from a high of 92% in turmeric extracts to a low of 12.8% in long melon. Other vegetables found to have high anti-oxidant activity (>70%) were kachnar, aonla, ginger, fenugreek, mint, beetroot, black carrots, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, lotus stem, yam, coriander and tomato. Anti-oxidant activity correlated significantly and positively with total phenolics ( r 2 =0.6578, P < 0.05). The results indicate that vegetables containing high phenolics may provide a source of dietary anti-oxidants. 相似文献

The graft copolymerization of styrene (st) and methacrylonitrile (MAN) onto Tefzel film in aqueous media by the preirradiation method has been studied. In order to follow the effect of preswelling of the backbone polymer, grafting was attempted onto preirradiated Tefzel film and monomer preswollen, preirradiated Tefzel film. Optimum conditions pertaining to maximum percentage of grafting of st and MAN have been evaluated. Grafting onto preswollen, preirradiated Tefzel film displayed better results. The effect of different alcohols of increasing chain length on the percentage of grafting of st and MAN was also studied. Graft copolymerization of st showed an increase, while grafting with MAN exhibited a decrease, in the percentage of grafting in the presence of alcohols as compared to that obtained in the aqueous medium. Characterization of the graft copolymers was made by IR and thermogravimetric studies. Tefzel‐graft‐polystyrene showed improved thermal stability while the MAN grafted onto preswollen, preirradiated Tefzel film produced graft copolymer with poor thermal stability. In this review, a comprehensive and illustrative survey is made of the regioselective synthesis of esters of sugars and related compounds using lipases. The main emphasis has been given to the screening and use of commercially available lipases for the enzymatic esterification of neutral monosaccharides, disaccharides, sugar alcohols and their selected ether and ester derivatives. The effect of solvents and solubilizing agents in improving the yields of the resultant sugar fatty acid esters has been incorporated. Further, solvent‐free esterification with molten fatty acids, use of ionic liquids and microwave radiations for improvement in the methodology have also been discussed. The electrochemical template synthesis of high aspect ratio copper microcylinders in the track-etch membranes of polycarbonate
having nominal pore size of 800 nm is considered. Effect of various parameters during electrodeposition is studied. It is
found that only a narrow range of current densities yields good quality crop. Proper wetting of the membrane prior to electrodeposition
is found to make significant contribution towards simultaneous start and uniform growth of the microstructures. The morphological
and structural analyses have been carried out through scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction respectively. It
is observed that the actual diameter of the cylinders is slightly larger than the nominal pore-size. X-ray diffraction studies
reveal that the material has FCC lattice structure with a high texture coefficient for (200) planes. Finally, the voltage-current

The moisture adsorption isotherms of watermelon seeds and kernels from Citrullus lanatus Cv Mateera and Citrullus vulgaris Cv Sugar baby were obtained using standard static method with saturated salt solutions over a range of water activities from 0.113 to 0.92 at 20-60°C. The adsorption capacity of seeds decreased with the increase in temperature at constant water activity. Sorption models were used to explain the adsorption behavior involving water activity and moisture content (Type I) and also temperature (Type II). Oswin's models gave best fit among Type I with coefficient of determination of 0.953-0.995, standard error of 0.031-0.0571, mean relative error of 0.071-0.152, and scattered residual plots. Modified Oswin was the best fit model among Type II for the seeds and kernels of both the cultivars with coefficient of determination of 0.997-0.999, standard error of 0.151-0.255, mean relative error of 0.018-0.244, and scattered residual plots. The net isoelectric heat of adsorption, estimated from Clausius-Clapeyron decreased from about 27.0 to 0.5 kJ/mol in kernels and 18.0 to 0.5 kJ/mol in seeds of both the cultivars as the moisture content increased from 5 to 25% (dry basis). 相似文献

Under a multicentre study conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research, 1712 samples of wheat grain/flour were collected from urban and rural areas in 11 states representing different geographical regions of India. These samples were analysed for residues of DDT (2,2-bis (p-chlorophenyl)-1,1,1-trichloro ethane) and different isomers of HCH (1,2,3,4,5,6-hexachloro cyclohexane, a mixture of isomers) by gas-liquid chromatography. Residues of DDT were detected in 59.4% of 1080 samples of wheat grain and in 78.2% of 632 samples of wheat flour. Different isomers of HCH were present in about 45-80% of the samples of wheat grain/flour. Medians of DDT and total HCH, respectively, for pooled samples of wheat grain were 0.013 and 0.035 mg kg-1, while those for wheat flour were 0.01 and 0.02 mg kg-1. Estimated daily intakes of DDT and different isomers of HCH through the consumption of wheat contaminated at their median and 90th percentiles constituted a small proportion of their acceptable daily intakes. Amongst the pesticide residues analysed, statutory maximum residue limits have been fixed only for γ-HCH in wheat in India, as 0.1 mg kg-1 in wheat grain and zero in wheat flour. Residue levels of γ-HCH exceeded these maximum residue limits in five of 1080 samples of wheat grain and in 340 of 632 samples of wheat flour. The failure to meet the requirement of the γ-HCH maximum residue limit in large number of wheat flour samples was attributed to the fixation of practically unachievable zero limit. Comparing the previous studies and the present one, the levels of residues of DDT and HCH in wheat were significantly decreased. 相似文献
