A fracture-mechanics theory is developed which gives fracture criteria for solids in general, without limitations as to their linearity, elastic behaviour or infinitesimal strain. Besides the “standard” results of the theory which reduce to familiar forms like the Griffith equation for linear, elastic solids, several new results emerge from the theory. These include a relationship between the surface work and the true surface energy of the solid, an explanation of certain departures from standard fracture mechanics obtained with inelastic materials, and a prediction and explanation of the phenomenon of notch brittleness. Further applications of the theory, such as adhesive failure and fatigue, will be explored in a subsequent paper. 相似文献

Reported here, for the first time, is the lattice matched growth of InAs1-xSbx on GaSb. The thermodynamic incompatibility of the system, i.e., the strong tendency for the In-As-Sb liquid to dissolve the
GaSb substrate, was solved via a novel liquid phase epitaxial growth technique. Liquid compositions for lattice matching conditions
have been determined in the 400-600°C range. Epitaxial growth has been examined for (100), (111)B and (111)A orientations.
Dislocation etch pit densities for lattice matched, and near lattice matched conditions are shown to be less than 104-cm−2 and 105-cm−4, respectively. The composition of the epitaxial layers are determined by the Gandolfi X-ray diffraction technique and compositional
homogeneity has been confirmed by SEM X-ray analysis. Some material related device properties which demonstrate the reproducibility

Serial cerebral blood flow studies performed by the intra-carotid 133Xenon method were fortuitously determined during the course of a cluster headache in a 32 year old man. The initial study was performed about 10 min after the headache began and showed values at the upper limit of normal. Twenty min after the headache started a second procedure showed that the autoregulatory response on hyperventilation was normal. Ergotamine tartrate was given intra-muscularly 23 min after the headache began and there was partial relief. A third cerebral blood flow estimation showed abnormally high values. O-Alkyl N-anthracenylmethyl derivatives of Cinchona alkaloids can function as enantioselective phase-transfer catalysts. By employing these catalysts in the asymmetric alkylation of glycine imines, one can generate a range of alpha-amino acid derivatives with high levels of enantiomeric excess. It is also possible to generate the catalysts in situ from commercially available chiral amines, which offers the opportunity to evaluate libraries of related structures. This latter approach has been successfully applied to a series of biphenyl quaternary ammonium salts resulting in the development of a new highly selective catalyst and opening up the potential of further expanding the range of alpha-amino acid derivatives that can be prepared. 相似文献

A new approach to the modification of carbon nanotubes with biomolecules for the development of nanoscale biosensors is presented. Alkaline phosphatase was immobilized on the surface of multi-wall carbon nanotubes utilizing a layer-by-layer methodology. Carbon nanotubes were incubated with streptavidin, resulting in the formation of a protein layer on the surface of the nanotubes. Biotinylated alkaline phosphatase was then allowed to bind to streptavidin, anchoring the sensing protein onto the surface. Electrochemical biosensors were constructed by using carbon nanotubes compacted into pellets. 1-Naphthyl phosphate, which is hydrolyzed by alkaline phosphatase to the electroactive 1-naphthol, was used as a substrate. An indoor personal rowing machine (Concept 2 Inc., Morrisville, VT) has been modified for functional electrical stimulation assisted rowing exercise in paraplegia. To successfully perform the rowing maneuver, the voluntarily controlled upper body movements must be coordinated with the movements of the electrically stimulated paralyzed legs. To achieve such coordination, an automatic controller was developed that employs two levels of hierarchy. A high level finite state controller identifies the state or phase of the rowing motion and activates a low-level state-dedicated fuzzy logic controller (FLC) to deliver the electrical stimulation to the paralyzed leg muscles. A pilot study with participation of two paraplegic volunteers showed that FLC spent less muscle energy, and produced smoother rowing maneuvers than the existing On-Off constant-level stimulation controller. 相似文献

The adsorption of micro-organisms at the gas/liquid interface causes both an increase in the oxygen respiration rate and a decrease in the oxygen diffusion coefficient near the interface. An increase in the oxygen consumption rate increases the oxygen mass transfer rate into the bacterial broth but a decreased oxygen diffusion coefficient reduces the mass transfer rate.
