Testimonies of “wireless catching up with wireline” have begun. An information superhighway system is envisioned to fulfill the plethora of demand for wireless communications and the need for multimedia networks with multiservice requirements. The revolution in this technology will eventually free us, as communication users, from being tied down to a particular fixed location in a telephone network to person-to-person communications, via pocket-sized terminals, at an affordable price. This article briefly surveys the state of the art, standards, and technological growth experienced in mobile cellular (terrestrial and satellite) communications since the days of the ingenious inventions of Alexander Graham Bell and Guglielmo Marconi, over a century ago. Subsequently, we describe some emerging technological trends that can improve the capacity of third-generation systems and future outlooks for PCS networks in the next millennium  相似文献

The underground reserve (root) has been an uncharted research territory with its untapped genetic variation yet to be exploited. Identifying ideal traits and breeding new rice varieties with efficient root system architecture (RSA) has great potential to increase resource-use efficiency and grain yield, especially under direct-seeded rice, by adapting to aerobic soil conditions. In this review, we tried to mine the available research information on the direct-seeded rice (DSR) root system to highlight the requirements of different root traits such as root architecture, length, number, density, thickness, diameter, and angle that play a pivotal role in determining the uptake of nutrients and moisture at different stages of plant growth. RSA also faces several stresses, due to excess or deficiency of moisture and nutrients, low or high temperature, or saline conditions. To counteract these hindrances, adaptation in response to stress becomes essential. Candidate genes such as early root growth enhancer PSTOL1, surface rooting QTL qSOR1, deep rooting gene DRO1, and numerous transporters for their respective nutrients and stress-responsive factors have been identified and validated under different circumstances. Identifying the desired QTLs and transporters underlying these traits and then designing an ideal root architecture can help in developing a suitable DSR cultivar and aid in further advancement in this direction.  相似文献

This letter develops new estimators for the Nakagami-m parameter based on real (integer and fractional) sample moments. These moment-based estimators are asymptotically unbiased, efficient, and have lower computational budget compared to the best known integer and real moment estimators [Cheng, J et al., (2002), Eqs. (4) and (9)] but comparable to [Gaeddert, J et al., (2005), Eq. (5)]. Specifically, the asymptotic expansion of sample moments derived in this article provides a generalized closed-form expression for the Nakagami-m parameter without the need for coefficient optimization for different ratios of real moments as needed in [Gaeddert, J et al., (2005)].  相似文献

Combustion of cattle biomass (CB) as a supplementary fuel has been proposed for reducing emissions of NOx, Hg, SO2, and nonrenewable CO2 in large coal‐fired power plants; however, its high ash content resulted in fouling and slagging problems when the CB was co‐fired with coals during small‐ and pilot‐scale tests. Ash depositions during combustion of the CB as a reburn fuel were investigated using a 30 kWt (100 000 Btu h?1) boiler burner facility with water‐cooled heat exchangers (HEXs) under unsteady transition conditions and short‐term operations. Two parameters were used to characterize the effects of the ash deposition: (1) Overall heat transfer coefficient (U) and (2) Burnt fraction (BF). A methodology was presented and empirically demonstrated for the effects of ash deposition on heat transfer under unsteady transition conditions. Experiments involving ash deposition during reburning the CB with coals were compared with experiments involving only ash‐less natural gas. It was found that the growth of the ash layer during reburning the CB and coals lowered the heat transfer rate to water in the HEXs. In low‐temperature regions, the thin layer of the ash deposition promoted radiation effects, while the thick layer of the ash deposition promoted the thermal resistance of the ash layer. A chemical analysis of the heavy ash indicated that the BF increased when a larger fraction of the CB was used in the reburn fuels, indicating better performance compared with coal combustion alone. However, the results of ash fusion temperature indicated the ash deposited during combustion of the CB and coals was more difficult to remove than the ash deposited during coal combustion alone. This study reports the antibacterial effect of PR-26, a synthetic peptide derived from the first 26 amino acid sequence of PR-39, an antimicrobial peptide isolated from porcine neutrophils. A three-strain mixture of Escherichia coli O157:H7 or Listeria monocytogenes of approximately 10(8) CFU was inoculated to a final concentration of 10(7) CFU/ml in 1% peptone water (pH 7.0), containing 50 or 75 microg/ml of PR-26, and incubated at 37 degrees C for 0, 6, 12, and 24 h; at 24 degrees C for 0, 12, 24, and 36 h; or at 10 or 4 degrees C for 0, 24, 72, and 120 h. Control samples included 1% peptone water inoculated with each pathogen mixture but containing no PR-26. The surviving population of each pathogen at each sampling time was determined by plating on tryptic soy agar with incubation at 37 degrees C for 24 h. At 37 degrees C, PR-26 decreased E. coli O157:H7 and L. monocytogenes populations by >5.0 log CFU/ml at 12 h, with complete inactivation at 24 h. At 24 degrees C, PR-26 reduced E. coli O157:H7 and L. monocytogenes by approximately 3.5, 4.0, and 4.5 log CFU/ml at the end of 12-, 24-, and 36-h incubations, respectively. At 4 and 10 degrees C, the inhibitory effect of PR-26 on E. coli O157:H7 and L. monocytogenes was significantly lower (P < 0.05) than that at 37 and 24 degrees C: a 2- to 3-log CFU/ml reduction was observed at 120-h incubation. Results indicate that PR-26 could potentially be used as an antimicrobial agent, but applications in appropriate foods need to be validated.  相似文献

The 3ω method for thermal conductivity measurement has emerged as an effective technique applicable to micro/nanowires and thin films. This paper describes the adaptation of the method to temperatures as high as 725 K enabling reliable thermal conductivity measurements on such samples for which previously published methods have been found inadequate. In the technique, a sample wire is heated by applying a sinusoidal current at an angular frequency ω, which causes a temperature and resistance variation at an angular frequency, 2ω, leading to a voltage signal at 3ω. The sample is connected as a four-terminal resistor to a digital lock-in amplifier, which is used to detect the in-phase and out-of-phase 3ω voltages resulting from the applied 1ω current. The data are fitted by varying the values of the thermal resistance and diffusion time, both of which are functions of thermal conductivity. Measurements are made at steady state temperatures between 300 and 725 K. Meaningful measurements at elevated temperatures require that thermal losses be understood and minimized. Conduction losses are prevented by suspending the sample above the mounting substrate. Convection losses are minimized by maintaining a vacuum of ~10(-5) torr inside the sample chamber. To minimize radiation losses, an appropriately sized sample is shrouded with a double heat-shield, with the inner shield temperature near that of the sample. Using the 3ω method, the thermal conductivity of platinum was determined to vary between 71.8 and 80.7 Wm(-1) K(-1) over the temperature range of 300 to 725 K, in agreement with published values measured for bulk samples.  相似文献

Detection of abnormalities from medical images is of key interest in developing computer-aided diagnostic tools. In this paper, we observe the key challenges for representation and feature extraction schemes to be met for detection of abnormalities by learning normal cases. We introduce an image representation, motivated by the effect of motion on perception of structures. This representation is based on a set of patterns called generalized moment patterns (GMP) generated via induced motion over regions of interest, for learning normal. The proposed GMP has been utilized to develop a scheme for addressing two well-known problems: lesion classification in mammograms and detection of macular edema in color fundus images. The strengths of this scheme are that it does not require any lesion-level segmentation and relies largely on normal images for training which is attractive for developing screening tools. The proposed scheme has been assessed on two public domain datasets, namely, MIAS and MESSIDOR. A comparison against the performance of state of the art methods indicates the proposed scheme to be superior.  相似文献

A new hydroxy functionalized liquid crystalline (LC) polyazomethine has been synthesized by the solution polycondensation of a dialdehyde with a diamine. The polymer was characterized by IR, 1H-, and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. Studies on the liquid crystalline properties reveal the nematic mesomorphic behavior. This polymer functions as a polymeric chelate and forms a three-dimensional network structure through the metal complexation. Influence of various metals and their concentration on the liquid crystalline behavior of the network has been studied. Networks up to 30 mol % of the metal show LC phase transitions; above this the transitions are suppressed and the network behaves like an LC thermoset. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Dates are naturally rich in antioxidants and other bioactive molecules. To enhance the shelf life and market value of these bioactive molecules, free flow spray-dried date powder was produced in a pilot scale spray drier. To better understand the rheological properties of the spray-dried date powder produced by different carrier materials (maltodextrin (MD) and gum Arabic (GA)), different drying temperatures (150 and 170°C) and different flow rates of the atomizer (25 and 40?mL/min), a microstructural characterization of the scanning electron microscopy images of the date powder was performed using the graphical user interface design environment and image analysis toolbox in MATLAB. Also, the fundamental rheological characteristics of deformation and flow of particulate solids (i.e., packing, permeability, and strength) were obtained using an advanced rheometer and helium pycnometer. The microstructural and rheological properties of the date powders were significantly affected by the processing conditions used in this study. The date powder produced with MD had smooth, regular-shaped spherical particles along with good agglomeration and packing characteristics. Date powder with GA had irregular-shaped relatively smaller particles with dented surfaces with poor agglomeration and packing properties. Moreover, the rheological quality of the date powders was inversely proportional to the temperature and flow rate. The Guggenheim–Anderson–de Boer model for sorption isotherms was a suitable fit for the date powder. The monolayer moisture content for gum Arabic was twice that of the maltodextrin carrier material, whereas the monolayer heat of sorption was higher for maltodextrins. Using maltodextrin as the carrier material and drying at 150°C with a flow rate of 25?mL/min produced a free flowing less caking product as depicted by the sorption isotherms.  相似文献

Premature browning (PMB) was investigated in ground beef patties with (0.04%, w/w) and without erythorbate. In Experiment 1, patties were stored at 4 °C for 48 h; at -18 °C for 21 days; or at -18 °C for 21 days, thawed at 4 °C for 24 h; and cooked. Bulk ground beef was stored at -18 °C for 24 days, thawed for 24 h at 4 °C, and patties prepared and cooked immediately. In Experiment 2, fresh patties were overwrapped with oxygen-permeable film or packaged in 80% O(2)/20% N(2) (MAP), and stored for 48 h at 4 °C, or at -18 °C for 21 days, and cooked. Total reducing activity and color (L*, a* and b* values) were measured immediately prior to cooking. Patties were cooked to internal temperatures of 60, 66, 71 and 77 °C and internal cooked color was measured. Total reducing activity was higher for the erythorbate treatment than controls for all storage conditions (P<0.05). a* Values of cooked patties were higher for erythorbate than control treatments under all storage and packaging conditions at 60 and 66 °C (P<0.05). The presence of erythorbate in ground beef patties appeared to maintain red color at cooked internal temperatures of 60 and 66 °C. Frozen bulk storage appeared to increase the susceptibility of ground beef to PMB when compared to fresh and frozen patties. Patties cooked directly from frozen state appeared less susceptible to PMB than frozen-thawed and bulk storage. Ground beef appeared predisposed to PMB when stored in high-oxygen MAP at 4 °C for 48 h.  相似文献
