In this investigation, cryogels composed of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were prepared by repeated freeze‐thaw method. The prepared cryogels served as templates for producing highly stable and uniformly distributed silver nanoparticles via in situ reduction of silver nitrate (AgNO3) using alkaline formaldehyde solution as reducing agent. The structure of the PVA/Ag cryogel nanocomposites was characterized by a Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectroscopy. The morphologies of pure PVA cryogels and PVA/Ag nanocomposites were observed by a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. The SEM analysis suggested that cryogels show a well defined porous morphology whereas TEM micrographs revealed the presence of nearly spherical and well separated Ag nanoparticles with diameter about 100 nm. XRD results showed all relevant Bragg's reflections for crystal structure of silver nanoparticles. The amount of silver in cryogel nanocomposites and thermal stability were determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP‐AES) and thermogravimetric analysis measurements. Mechanical properties of nanocomposites were observed in terms of tensile strength. The antibacterial studies of the synthesized nanosilver containing cryogels showed good antibacterial activity against both gram‐negative and gram‐positive bacteria. The prepared PVA/Ag nanocomposites were also investigated for swelling and deswelling behaviors. The results reveal that both the swelling and deswelling process depends on the chemical composition of the cryogel silver nanocomposites, number of freeze‐Thaw cycles and pH and temperature of the swelling medium. The biocompatibility of the prepared nanocomposites was judged by in vitro methods of percent hemolysis and protein (BSA) adsorption. POLYM. The synthesis and detailed characterization of racemic 3‐methyl‐1,4‐dioxan‐2‐one (3‐MeDX) are reported. The bulk ring‐opening polymerization of 3‐MeDX, to yield a poly(ester‐ether) meant for biomedical applications, in the presence of various initiators such as tin(II) octanoate, tin(II) octanoate/n‐butyl alcohol, aluminium tris‐isopropoxide and an aluminium Schiff base complex (HAPENAlOiPr) under varying experimental conditions is here detailed for the first time. Polymerization kinetics were investigated and compared with those of 1,4‐dioxan‐2‐one. The studies reveal that the rate of polymerization of 3‐MeDX is less than that of 1,4‐dioxan‐2‐one. Experimental conditions to achieve relatively high molar masses have been established. Thermodynamic parameters such as enthalpy and entropy of 3‐MeDX polymerization as well as ceiling temperature have been determined. Poly(D ,L ‐3‐MeDX) is found to possess a much lower ceiling temperature than poly(1,4‐dioxan‐2‐one). Poly(D ,L ‐3‐MeDX) was characterized using NMR spectroscopy, matrix‐assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry, size exclusion chromatography and differential scanning calorimetry. The effect of grain size and composition on the fracture toughness of Ti–Al–Nb alloys in β solution-treated condition was investigated. The fracture toughness of the alloys was found to increase with an increase in grain size initially, reach a maximum and subsequently decrease with further increase in grain size. This trend was attributed primarily to the effect of grain size on the enhancement of fracture toughness due to stress-induced martensitic transformation (SIMT) at the crack tip, which in turn can be related to the effect of grain size on trigger stress for SIMT. Alloys containing higher Al and Nb showed a higher toughness for the same grain size, which was also explained in terms of effect of composition on the trigger stress.  相似文献

An indigenous and simple electronic control system for Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film deposition set-up has been developed. This set-up consists of a microstepping circuit to drive the stepper motors with precision and smooth motion, essential for controlled movement of the barriers and substrate in the LB set-up. Linear variable differential transformer (LVDT)-based displacement measuring device has been developed and used to measure the surface pressure of the monolayer material spread on the water surface. A control program is written which incorporates all operational modes required to drive the set-up and to acquire the datain situ using a set of user-friendly commands. This control set-up has been successfully used to plot the pressure-area isotherm of various amphiphilic compounds such as ferric stearate, zinc arachidate etc. and for deposition of ordered LB films of ferric stearate.  相似文献

Effect of manganese and cobalt doping (0.50 mole%) on electrical properties of ZnO based varistors has been studied using complex plane modulus analysis. It is found that total resistivity of Mn doped sample is more as compared to that of Co doped sample. This has been ascribed to existence of Mn in variable valence states viz. Mn2+, Mn3+ and Mn4+ which promotes hopping conduction leading to increase in the conductivity as compared to Co doped sample, in which Co exists predominantly in +3 state with traces of Co2+ or Co+4 states. This accounts for its less conductivity. Mechanism of conduction is the same for grains and grainboundaries.  相似文献

Aluminium-zinc alloy sacrificial anodes are extensively used for cathodic protection. The performance of the sacrificial anodes can be significantly improved by incorporation of microalloying elements in the aluminium matrix. In the present work nano cerium oxide particles of different concentrations, ranging from 0 to 1 wt% were incorporated for activating and improving the performance of the anode. The electrochemical test results revealed the increased efficiency of the anode. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed the information that the presence of nano cerium oxide in the anode matrix caused effective destruction of the passive alumina film, which facilitated enhancement of galvanic performance of the anode. Moreover, the biocidal activity of cerium oxide prevented the bio accumulation considerably which enables the anodes to be used in aggressive marine conditions.  相似文献

A series of novel polyurethanes (PUs) with carbohydrate crosslinkers was synthesized. The drug loading and release kinetics were studied by using lamotrigine as a model drug. The polymers were designed in such a way that the drug release was tailored by differences in the stoichiometry of polymers. All the PUs were characterized for thermal and morphological properties by using differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis and scanning electron microscope , respectively. The encapsulation of drug inside PU matrix was confirmed via Fourier transform ‐ infrared (FT‐IR) spectra and scanning electron microscope . The kinetics and release mechanisms were observed to be a function of stoichiometric parameters such as type of crosslinker, polyol/crosslinker ratio and polyol/chain extender ratio. All the PUs were observed to be non‐cytotoxic in normal lung cell line L132. The synthesized PUs exhibited good mechanical strength, tunable release rates and biocompatibility that can be utilized in biomedical applications like wound dressing, biomedical implants , and drug delivery carriers. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
