This paper describes the work of the International Boundary and Water Commission, United States and Mexico (IBWC), to find cooperative solutions to issues pertaining to the Colorado River along the US-Mexico border. Since 1944, the IBWC has worked to resolve issues related to the distribution of the waters of the Colorado River between the United States and Mexico; salinity of waters delivered to Mexico; conveyance capacity of the Colorado River; and the conditions of the Colorado River Delta. The IBWC has emphasized binational cooperation to explore both short-term and long-term solutions to these issues. 相似文献

The Liver-Expressed Antimicrobial Peptide 2 (LEAP-2) has emerged as an endogenous GHS-R antagonist and blunts the orexigenic action of ghrelin. This study aimed to determine the Ghrelin/LEAP-2 ratio in humans and rats during pregnancy. In humans, we conducted a nested case-control study within an observational prospective cohort. Healthy and mild preeclamptic pregnant women were studied at each trimester of gestation and three months postpartum. In addition, a group of non-pregnant women was studied into the follicular and luteal phases of the menstrual cycle. Furthermore, Ghrelin/LEAP-2 ratio was investigated in non-pregnant rats and at different periods of rat pregnancy. Human and rat serum ghrelin and LEAP-2 levels were determined using the commercially available ELISA kits. The Ghrelin/LEAP-2 ratio peak around the second trimester of gestation in healthy pregnant women (p < 0.05). Additionally, there were no statistically significant differences in Ghrelin/LEAP-2 ratio between healthy and preeclamptic pregnant women at each trimester of gestation (p > 0.05). The Ghrelin/LEAP-2 ratio in pregnant rat reached the peak around mid-gestation with a similar pattern to the human pregnancy. LEAP-2 was visualized by immunohistochemistry in human term placenta and rat placentas on days 12, 16 and 21 of pregnancy. In conclusion, this study provides the first evidence of a Ghrelin/LEAP-2 ratio peak around the half-way point of pregnancy onwards during human and rat pregnancy, and it might be associated with increased rates of weight gain during pregnancy. Thus, this study suggests that LEAP-2 and Ghrelin/LEAP-2 ratio might play an important role in maternal physiology adaptation of weight gain during pregnancy. 相似文献

This investigation describes two methods to obtain rubber composites based on natural rubber (NR) and organophilic layered silicates. In order to improve the exfoliation and compatibilization of the organoclays with the rubber matrix, a new approach which involves swelling of the organoclays with an elastomer solution prior to compounding has been used. The effect of the addition during swelling of a coupling agent, namely bis(trietoxysilylpropyl)tetrasulfan (TESPT), on the behaviour of the composites was also investigated. The results show that a low amount of organoclay (10 phr) significantly improves the properties of natural rubber. This suggests a strong rubber–organoclay interaction which is attributed to a high degree of rubber intercalation into the nanosilicate galleries, as was confirmed from X‐ray diffraction. In addition, an ulterior improvement in the properties of the nanocomposites prepared by solution mixing is clearly observed, due to the better filler–rubber compatibility. An even further increase in the properties is observed by treating the silicate with a silane coupling agent. The silane functional groups modify the clay surface, thus reducing the surface energy, and consequently improving the compatibility with the rubber matrix. High temperature creep of a metal–ceramic composite consisted of yttria tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (YTZP) with a certain
amount of nickel grains (Ni–YTZP, 2.5% vol.) has been studied. The average grain size of YTZP grains was 0.20 μm, whereas
that of the Ni grains was 50–70 nm. This work reports the mechanical response under creep of such composite materials. It
is found that the activation energy for creep is significantly higher than that reported in similar systems with much larger

A study of the effect of organic volumetric loading rate (BV) on the performance of a down‐flow anaerobic fixed bed reactor (DFAFBR) treating settled piggery waste was carried out at a range of between 1.1 and 6.8 g COD dm?3 d?1. The reactor operated at good removal efficiencies and stability under the operational conditions studied. Logarithmic empirical equations described adequately the removal efficiency for different parameters studied (COD, SCOD, BOD, TS, VS, TSS, VSS and phosphorous). Although process stability was affected by the increase of BV, process failure was not observed. A logarithmic relationship was found to describe the influence of BV on the TVFA/alkalinity ratio (p). A linear correlation was found between the effluent substrate concentration and the values of p and between p and the CO2/CH4 ratio in the biogas. The effect of the hydraulic volumetric loading rate (HV) on the flow pattern of the reactor was evaluated. Dispersion number (Dn) was in the range of 0.17–0.37 for the maximum and minimum values of HV studied, respectively. The ratio between the real and theoretical HRT increased as the HV decreased. These results demonstrate that axial dispersion increased as the HV and the Reynolds number decreased. Due to the hydraulic behaviour of the reactor, the kinetic model developed by Lawrence and McCarty was used for describing the experimental results obtained. Maximum specific substrate removal rate (K), specific organic loading rate constant (KL), microbial decay coefficient (Kd), microbial yield coefficient (Y), maximum microbial growth rate (UM) and saturation constant (KS) were found to be: 3.1 (g COD g VSS?1 d?1), 3.0 (g COD g VSS?1 d?1), 0.062 (d?1), 0.15 (g VSS g COD removed?1), 0.39 (d?1) and 2.6 (g SCOD dm?3), respectively. This work is part of a long term project which aims at developing a hydraulic model for real-time simulation of unsteady flows in sewers ranging from gravity flows, to partly gravity–partly surcharged flows to fully surcharged flows. The success of this project hinges on the ability of the hydraulic model to handle a wide range of complex boundaries and to provide accurate solutions with the least central processing unit time. This first paper focuses on the development and assessment of two second-order explicit finite-volume Godunov-type schemes (GTS) for unsteady gravity flows in sewers, but with no surcharging. Traditionally, hydraulic transients have been modeled using the method of characteristics (MOC), which is noted for its ability to handle complex boundary conditions (BCs). The two GTS described herein incorporate BCs in a similar manner to the MOC. The accuracy and efficiency of these GTS schemes are investigated using problems whose solution contains features that are relevant to transient flows in sewers such as shock, expansion, and roll waves. The results show that these GTS schemes are significantly faster to execute than the fixed-grid MOC scheme with space-line interpolation, and in some cases, the accuracy produced by the two GTS schemes cannot be matched by the accuracy of the MOC scheme, even when a Courant number close to one and a large number of grids is used. Furthermore, unlike the MOC solutions, which exhibit increasing numerical dissipation with decreasing Courant numbers, the resolution of the shock fronts was maintained by the GTS schemes even for very low Courant numbers (0.001). 相似文献

After a decade of rapid development of an indigenous petrochemicals industry Mexico still relies on imported petrochemicals. To promote further participation of the private sector the Mexican government subsidizes the purchase of energy and basic raw materials. We analyze the impact of such a development policy on the growth of a balanced chemical industry, on the reduction of the dependence on imported chemicals, and on the technology selection by the industry. A theoretical expression is developed to calculate the critical line of a polymer-mixed solvent system, at the limit of decreasing proportion of one of the solvents. This expression is written in terms of binary interaction parameters, and provides a criterion to predict whether or not the liquid mixture is expected to be a cosolvent of the polymer. The expression should be useful to describe powerful cosolvent systems, and it is applied to calculate the depression of the critical line in the system PMMA-acetonitrile + chlorobutane. Experimental cloud point data are determined on this system and the results are compared with the theory. Other cosolvents of PMMA are discussed. 相似文献
