The elution volume of polystyrene or of poly(ethylene glycol) of various molecular weights was measured in both tetrahydrofuran and benzene at 40 or 60°C by means of gel permeation chromatography utilizing columns packed with crosslinked polystyrene gel or porous glass. When the polystyrene gel was used as the column packing, a relationship between log [η]M and the peak elution volume for polystyrene agreed with that for poly(ethylene glycol). Using columns packed with glass, however, the elution volume of polystyrene was smaller than that of poly(ethylene glycol) at the same log [η]M. The results are considered to be attributable to the adsorption of poly(ethylene glycol) onto the glass. The effect of the adsorption on the elution volume was evaluated by assuming a universal calibration for columns containing porous glass; the deviation of the elution volume from the universal calibration curve increased with increase in molecular weight. At lower temperatures, even polystyrene was adsorbed onto the glass. Therefore, to reduce the adsorption of polymers on glass, it is necessary to increase the temperature or use surface treatment when porous glass is used as a GPC column packing. 相似文献

The reforming of CH4 with CO2 over supported Rh catalysts has been studied over a range of temperatures (550–1000 K). A significant effect of the support on the catalytic activity was observed, where the order was Rh/Al2O3>Rh/TiO2>Rh/SiO2. The catalytic activity of Rh/SiO2 was promoted markedly by physical mixing of Rh/SiO2 with metal oxides such as Al2O3, TiO2, and MgO, indicating a synergetic effect. The role of the metal oxides used as the support and the physical mixture may be ascribed to the promotion in dissociation of CO2 on the surface of Rh, since the CH4 + CO2 reaction is first order in the pressure of CO2, suggesting that CO2 dissociation is the rate-determining step. We demonstrated attenuated total reflection (ATR) spectroscopy with an integrated prism system that included a terahertz emitter, a terahertz receiver, and an ATR prism. The ATR prism had two internal off-axis parabolic mirrors for, respectively, collimating and focusing the terahertz waves. The Fresnel loss at each interface was reduced, and the total propagation efficiency was 3.36 times larger than when using a non-integrated prism system. The refractive index of water samples calculated from the experimental data showed good agreement with values reported in the literature. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Zinc (Zn) has a potent stimulatory effect on osteoblastic bone formation and an inhibitory effect on osteoclastic bone resorption. PURPOSE: The effect of Zn on the function of matrix vesicles (MVs) remains controversial. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Zn on alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity of osteoblasts and in the initial biological MVs‐mediated mineral deposition. STUDY DESIGN: Osteoblasts were treated with varying concentrations of Zn dissolved in culture medium. After three, five, and seven days of culture, ALP activity was assayed. For the detection of a low level of calcium concentration in MVs, X‐ray fluorescence (XRF) analyses were applied. The effect of Zn for the transformation of calcium phosphate was analyzed using a scanning electron microscope fitted with an energy dispersive X‐ray microanalysis (EDX) system. RESULTS: The ALP activity of osteoblasts in culture medium supplemented with 1 × 10?5M of Zn was significantly increased at both five and seven days. XRF data demonstrated higher levels of calcium concentration over time in the Zn‐supplemented group. EDX data showed that mineral deposits beginning on day 3 were transformed from whitlockite to calcium phosphate near hydroxyapatite, and that Zn accelerated this transformation. CONCLUSIONS: The proper concentration of Zn increased the ALP activity of osteoblasts after five and seven days of incubation. The present XRF and EDX data suggest that the increase of mineral deposition with Zn exposure for one to five days might be mediated by the activation of ALP and calcium‐binding proteins. Microsc. In this paper, the authors present a new technique, called the vector indication method, which computes and illustrates the radial error motion of a rotating spindle as the instantaneous vectors on a plane normal to a spindle axis. The radial error motion is measured by two sensors located perpendicularly to each other. A new algorithm is developed to obtain the instantaneous vectors of spindle axis displacement by digital processing. It is revealed that the behavior of displacement of spindle axis can be more precisely known by the vector indication method than by “the Lissajous' figure,” which is one of the conventional methods. 相似文献

A bonding method utilizing redox reactions of metallic oxide microparticles achieves metal-to-metal bonding in air, which can be alternative to lead-rich high-melting point solder. However, it is known that the degree of the reduction of metallic oxide microparticles have an influence on the joint strength using this bonding method. In this paper, the reduction behavior of CuO paste and its effect on Cu-to-Cu joints were investigated through simultaneous microstructure-related x-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry measurements. The CuO microparticles in the paste were gradually reduced to submicron Cu2O particles at 210–250°C. Subsequently, Cu nanoparticles were generated instantaneously at 300–315°C. There was a marked difference in the strengths of the joints formed at 300°C and 350°C. Thus, the Cu nanoparticles play a critical role in sintering-based bonding using CuO paste. Furthermore, once the Cu nanoparticles have formed, the joint strength increases with higher bonding temperature (from 350°C to 500°C) and pressure (5–15 MPa), which can exceed the strength of Pb-5Sn solder at higher temperature and pressure. 相似文献

Low-temperature ultrahigh vacuum frequency-modulation atomic force microscopy (AFM) was performed using a 1 MHz length-extension type of quartz resonator as a force sensor. Taking advantage of the high stiffness of the resonator, the AFM was operated with an oscillation amplitude smaller than 100 pm, which is favorable for high spatial resolution, without snapping an AFM tip onto a sample surface. The huge information storage capability of DNA and its ability to self‐assemble can be harnessed to enable massively parallel computing in a small space. DNA‐based logic gates are designed that rely on DNA strand displacement reactions; however, computation is slow due to time‐consuming DNA reassembly processes and prone to failure as DNA is susceptible to degradation by nucleases and under certain solution conditions. Here, it is shown that the presence of a cationic copolymer boosts the speed of DNA logic gate operations that involve multiple and parallel strand displacement reactions. Two kinds of DNA molecular operations, one based on a translator gate and one on a seesaw gate, are successfully enhanced by the copolymer without tuning of computing conditions or DNA sequences. The copolymer markedly reduces operation times from hours to minutes. Moreover, the copolymer enhances nuclease resistance. 相似文献

Plants synthesize variable mixtures of herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) as part of their evolutionary conserved defense. To elucidate the impact of chewing herbivores with different level of adaptation on HIPV profiles in rice, we measured HIPVs released from rice seedlings challenged by either the generalist herbivore Mythimna loreyi (MYL) or the specialist Parnara guttata (PAG). Both herbivores markedly elicited the emission of HIPVs, mainly on the second and third days after attack compared to control plants. In addition, side-by-side HIPV comparisons using MYL and PAG caterpillars revealed that generalist feeding induced comparably more HIPVs relative to specialist, particularly on day two as highlighted by multivariate analysis (PLS-DA) of emitted HIPVs, and further confirmed in mimicked herbivory experiments. Here, mechanically wounded plants treated with water (WW) released more VOCs than untreated controls, and on top of this, oral secretions (OS) from both herbivores showed differential effects on volatile emissions from the wounded plants. Similar to actual herbivory, MYL OS promoted higher amounts of HIPVs relative to PAG OS, thus supporting disparate induction of rice indirect defenses in response to generalist and specialist herbivores, which could be due to the differential composition of their OS. A pilot-scale plant to treat concrete sludge and produce calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and an environmental purification agent (phosphorus adsorbent derived from concrete sludge, PAdeCS®) was designed, constructed, and operated. Concrete sludge from a concrete pile and pole production plant, boiler gas containing CO2, and groundwater were used in the plant. The process involved calcium extraction from concrete sludge into water, followed by reaction of the calcium with CO2 to produce crystalline CaCO3. The pilot-scale plant was operated for 1 week, and the mass flows, conversion of CO2 to CaCO3, and net CO2 emissions of the process were estimated. High-purity CaCO3 (>97%) suitable for industrial use was obtained. Based on the power consumption of the process and the amount of CO2 sequestered into CaCO3, a net reduction in CO2 emissions can be achieved using this process. The produced PAdeCS can be used as an inexpensive substitute for calcium series environmental purification agents. 相似文献
