Accessory artificial circulation in complex treatment of experimental acute toxic pulmonary edema

In experiments on 50 dogs with toxic acute edema of the lung, induced with intravenous injection of 0.1% silver nitrate, the authors have studied the efficacy of accessory artificial circulation and "conservative" therapy. During the perfusion a discharge of the right portions, adequate extracorporeal gas metabolism, normalization of blood gas and acid-base balance were noted; an intensity of pulmonary edema is descreased. An intensive therapy for pulmonary edema was found to be more effective in association of "conservative" treatment with venoarterial perfusion and blood oxygenation.     

Stimulation of intestinal degeneration by oestradiol and testosterone implantation in the migrating river lamprey, Lampetra fluviatilis L

Of 325 patients with retinal detachments, 110 patients (34%) had aphakic eyes. These detachments were subdivided into three types based on their clinical appearance during indirect ophthalmoscopy and slit-lamp biomicroscopy. Fifty-two patients (47%) had aphakic detachments (Type 3), categorized by small tears due to traction along a prominent posterior or vitreous base and the absence of visible retinal degeneration. Fifty of the 52 patients in this group were operated on by using a modification of the nondrainage procedure developed by Custodis, and employing cryosurgical coagulation and an external encircling buckle using a 3-mm silicone sponge. The sponge was secured beneath the retinal tear, and its length was shortened to produce a moderately elevated buckle. Although 50% of retinal tears were open at the end of the operation, 60% of all eyes operated on without drainage reattached in 16 hours, 90% in one week, and the remainder in two weeks. Visual acuity of 70% of these patients was 6/15 (20/50) or better when tested six months after surgery. The operation did not wall away peripheral fluid, but closed retinal tears completely, reduced circumferential vitreous traction, and avoided drainage of subretinal fluid.     

On the question of an electrokinetic requirement for phospholipase C action

The phospholipase C of clostridium welchii (alpha toxin) has an absolute requirement for trace quantities of Ca2+. It attacks pure phosphatidylcholine particles (smectic mesophases) having a close-packed bilayer structure only when their surface zeta potential is made positive by the addition of certain divalent ions (e.g., Ca2+) to the aqueous phase or by the presence of low concentrations of long chain cations to the lipid. Alternatively, if the rotational freedom of individual phospholipid molecules is increased by the insertion of short n-alkanols (e.g., hexanol) into the bilayer or when a monolayer of the substrate at an air/water interface is expended, enzymic hydrolysis can occur without any requirement for a net postive charge on the surface.     

Coronary artery fistula after cardiac transplantation

A cardiac transplant recipient with multiple coronary artery fistulae draining into the right ventricle is described. These fistulae presumably resulted from repeated endomyocardial biopsies. The diagnosis of coronary artery fistulae was made at the annual coronary arteriography. The magnitude of the shunt remained small over eight years of follow-up.     

Congenital cystic diseases of liver and extrahepatic bile ducts

The paper presents 30-year experience in treating 158 patients with congenital cystic diseases of the liver and bile ducts. Depending on the pattern of hepatobiliary lesions, the diagnostic value of techniques, such as ultrasound, computerized tomography, scintigraphy of the liver duodenoscopy with THCG was defined. Analyzing the late outcomes provided recommendations for the most optimal surgical management: cystic fenestration and tunneling in hepatic polycystosis, pericystectomy in solitary cysts of the liver, different varieties of bile draining operations in choledochal cysts and Caroli's disease.     

Molecular dynamics simulations of the docking of substituted N5- deazapterins to dihydrofolate reductase

Orientations of the deazapterin ring and the conformational preferences of groups appended to the deazapterin ring in a set of 8-substituted deazapterin cations docked into the dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) binding site have been investigated using a methodology based on the simulated annealing technique within molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Of five possible binding pockets for the 8-substituents, identified from a preliminary manual docking study, one has been definitively eliminated after an analysis of MD trajectories, while another remains uncertain. Using a new method based on standard thermodynamic cycles and a linear approximation of polar and non-polar free energy contributions from MD averages, binding affinities of the different ligands in each binding site have been correlated with experimental dissociation constants. The study has provided insights into structure-activity relationships for use in the design of modified inhibitors of DHFR.
